A List of Black-Owned Fashion Labels You Can Support and Shop

June 03, 2020 at 03:55PM With demonstrations being held across the United States right now protesting the unjust death of George Floyd, it is time for the fashion community to step up and do its part as well. One way you can support the community is by shopping pieces from Black designers. Some designers, like Aurora James of Brother Vellies, have issued powerful call to actions from big corporations. In an inspiring Instagram post, Aurora asked larger corporations like Net-a-Porter, Sephora, and Saks Fifth Avenue, to name a few, to step up to the plate and help make a change. If you’re looking for a place to start, we’ve created a list of Black designers you can support. From Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, whose fashion shows have celebrated Black history, to Rihanna, who has helped changed the landscape with Fenty by becoming the first Black woman to create an original brand for LVHM, we’re listing 17 Black designers you can support and shop from ahead. June 02, 2020 at 12:35AM Fashion brand ASAI is bringing back Rihanna‘s memorable vacation dress for a good cause. Amid protests in response to George Floyd’s death and police brutality, British-Chinese-Vietnamese designer A Sai Ta took action to stand with the Black community by bringing back the singer’s outfit to raise funds for Black Lives Matter, Solace Women’s Aid, and The Voice of Domestic Workers. “It’s More Than Just a Job Now”: Essential Workers Take the Cover of British Vogue

June 01, 2020 at 10:30PM British Vogue is spotlighting a different kind of model in its latest issue. The magazine’s powerful July 2020 covers honor individuals supporting their communities during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. All residing in the greater London area, the three essential workers are Narguis Horsford, a train driver; Rachel Millar, a community midwife; and Anisa Omar, a supermarket worker. “If you had told me at the beginning of the year that British Vogue‘s July cover stars would feature a community midwife, a train driver and supermarket worker, I might not have believed you,” Editor in Chief Edward Enninful wrote on Instagram. “But, as our nation perseveres against Covid-19, we find ourselves leaning not on the powers that be, but on ordinary people and their extraordinary strength and kindness.” In respective interviews, Narguis, Rachel, and Anisa spoke about the ways in which their work has been impacted by the coronavirus but also illuminated its importance. “I am no hero, but I’m proud of being a train driver and the essential role we are playing during the coronavirus crisis,” Narguis said. “Our services are vitally important to keep London moving throughout these unprecedented times.” “It’s more than just a job now.” Anisa, meanwhile, said she’s noticed a change in supermarket shoppers. “Before the pandemic, people would look at us as service assistants – we’re there to show them where the eggs are or if they want to complain about something. But now they’re a lot more understanding,” she said.
