Fashion’s in a Really Weird Place Right Now, and This At-Home Runway Show Was Just What We Needed
May 02, 2020 at 12:02AM In light of the pandemic, an at-home fashion show may seem low on the list of priorities on a Friday afternoon in what feels like week 152 of lockdown. Even as a fashion director, eking out a few minutes to watch a livestream meant scrambling to get my daughter down for her nap, and racing to the computer just moments before the Fashion Unites amfAR Against COVID-19 runway show kicked off. Needless to say I was sweating when I sat down to watch, but when I hit the play button, I forgot about all that. It was like being transported to a runway show, in a room with other people who also genuinely love fashion; but it was also so much better. Like many in the fashion industry, I’ve been doing a lot of soul-searching lately. How and why is fashion important, or, even relevant right now? Well, if you tuned into the show today, the thousands of commenters reacting in real-time to the runway would be your first clue: it’s connecting us. The virtual runway became a very real way to engage with the fashion world we love, and most importantly, to do so in a more relatable way than ever. DIY hair and makeup, clothes plucked from their own closets, and hallways and stairwells tuned into makeshift runways reminded us all that even the fashion industry’s heavy weights are all at home like us While I’ve long-loved the magic that comes with a
Ashley Graham Just Did Her First Fashion Show Postbaby Wearing a Bra and Biker Shorts
May 01, 2020 at 11:26PM If we had to name one model who kept it real during the CR Fashion Unites Virtual Runway Show, it would have to be Ashley Graham. The model, who gave birth to a baby boy in January, is already back on the runway (and by runway, I mean her living room), and it’s pretty damn impressive. For the virtual runway show, the supermodel joined the likes of Lily Aldridge, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Jasmine Tookes to help raise money and awareness for amfAR’s Fund to Fight COVID-19. While some models brought out their most “fashun” looks for the virtual runway show (I’m looking at you, Natasha Poly in your shimmery gold Paco Rabanne minidress!), Ashley kept it real. She showed off her catwalk skills wearing a cheetah-print button-down shirt that was left open to reveal a lace bra. She finished off her look with a pair of biker shorts, because comfort is key. Her whole outfit was a total mood, if I’m being honest, and I can see myself slipping into something similar while working from home. Ashley accessorized her runway look with a choker necklace and gold hoop earrings. For her second look, she also kept it casual in a white bodysuit paired with a leather shirt and high socks. Keep reading to get a closer look at her outfits from all angles. I Spent the Entire Virtual Fashion Show Scoping Out These Incredible Supermodel Homes
May 01, 2020 at 11:01PM For the world’s first virtual runway show, a collaboration between Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book and amfAR, supermodels let us into their homes to raise money for COVID-19 relief. Roitfeld met with the major lineup of models beforehand – including but not limited to Ashley Graham, Irina Shayk, Halima Aden, Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Huffine, and Stella Maxwell – working with them to style their own clothes for a 30-minute event hosted by YouTube’s Derek Blasberg. I was, of course, impressed by the looks, which ranged from high-octane glamour (did you see Winnie Harlow’s pink beaded gown?) to completely casual. Seriously, Ashley was in lingerie and socks, so things could not have gotten any more real. But to make matters more exciting, we got a sneak peek into some of the beautiful homes of these world-renowned celebrities. It wasn’t just the interiors that made me weak at the knees, but the exteriors. I mean, I would spend all day outside if I had Isabeli Fontana’s tropical-inspired digs complete with a tiki hut and a friendly bird. If you’ve already spent ample time digesting all the appearances from some of your favorite elite models, dare to dream a little and get lost in their amazing spaces ahead. Outer Banks: Sarah Cameron May Be a Kook, but Her Beachy Style Is Actually Affordable
May 01, 2020 at 10:46PM There are countless reasons to get hooked on Netflix’s latest teen drama, Outer Banks. Besides the obvious pulls – the devastatingly good-looking cast, mysterious treasure-hunting plot, and dreamy setting – I found myself slamming that “Next Episode” button to see what beachy outfit Sarah Cameron would pull out of her closet next. Her wardrobe is teeming with summer-ready crop tops, denim shorts, swimsuits, and sundresses I want to borrow ASAP – my personal favorite being that striped wrap dress she scores in Chapel Hill with John B. Although Sarah (portrayed by Madelyn Cline) is technically a rich Kook, her wardrobe is actually pretty affordable, featuring pieces from retailers like Urban Outfitters, Billabong, and Topshop. Seeing as I can’t just fly down to the Outer Banks to raid her closet at the moment – and, well, because she’s a fictional character – I did my due diligence and tracked down where to shop some of the cutest outfits she wears while adventuring around town with John B and his crew. Get the scoop on her vacation-worthy style ahead, and please join me in crossing your fingers for a second season. Mindy Kaling Re-created Jared Leto’s Infamous Met Gala Outfit – Floating Head and All
May 01, 2020 at 07:46PM Remember when Jared Leto walked the Met Gala red carpet in 2019 carrying . . . his own head? Well, Mindy Kaling one upped him with her re-creation, which she showed off on her Instagram. Mindy joined the #MetGalaChallenge, which was created by Billy Porter and Vogue. The challenge encourages individuals to re-create iconic Met Gala looks from the past while staying at home since the event is postponed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mindy absolutely crushed the challenge with her creative and fashionable outfit that left us in tears from how hard we were cackling. The actress no doubt won the the challenge in our eyes with her interpretation of the infamous Gucci look. Mindy constructed a red dress and covered it with Christmas lights. She even went so far as to draw a beard on her face and carried a mannequin head that resembled herself – fake beard and all! (ICYMI: The head was a reference to Gucci’s controversial Fall 2018 runway during Milan Fashion Week, where two models came down the catwalk carrying replicas of their own heads.) Keep reading to see Mindy’s re-creation ahead and try not to giggle. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
