CBD For Dummies: 5 Things You Should Know At Home Right Now

May 18, 2020 at 11:00AM There’s still a big learning curve for many of us when it comes to CBD. It has quickly become one of the most popular trends in wellness with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill and the pace of change and growth is head-spinning. Scientists, consumers, and yes, even our federal government, are quickly discovering the benefits of hemp and CBD. If you’re still hesitant or confused by anything CBD-related, here are the basics to get you oriented… On CBD: Just the Facts, Ma’am + What The Heck Is CBD? CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 100 cannabis compounds found in industrial hemp. CBD activates the body’s endocannabinoid system which has been scientifically found to contribute to regulatory functions in the body. + How does CBD work? CBD and cannabinoids fit into a network of neuron receptors called the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate many physical processes. The endocannabinoid system is a major interface between the nervous system, hormone system, and immune system, most notably the nervous system, where CBD can provide relief of pain, inflammation and produce a sense of calm. + Common Uses of CBD: Common uses of CBD include support of the body’s ability to deal with stress, insomnia, anxiety, irritable bowel symptoms, decreasing chronic pain, inflammation and even post-workout strains. + How do you take CBD? CBD is most commonly taken as an oral tincture or pill, but is also available in edible forms like gummies, and as a topical product used

May 15, 2020 at 11:00AM Adult Acne can feel like an impossible puzzle to solve. Those who suffer from a chronic case know the headache of booking appointments ad nauseam, cycling through endless products and banking on suggested solutions to finally provide relief.  Holistic facialist, Hayley Wood, aka the Therapeutic Skin Coach, has a deep grasp on what’s going on with your skin from the inside out. We asked the Hollywood-based skin genius to share some ideas for home remedies for acne and she really delivered. These ideas address your skin’s needs on all levels – and if you haven’t hopped on the celery juice bandwagon yet, Hayley’s tips might just tip you over the edge… For the longest time acne has been considered one of – if not the most – frustrating inflammatory skin conditions. It can take a toll on your emotional well-being and leave you feeling helpless. In actuality, acne is common because there are a multitude of root causes that can stir up within us for years when our detoxification systems are overworked. I got into the profession of esthetics thirteen years ago because of my own personal battle with acne. It was a tumultuous decade. I dreamt of a time in which I would wake up poreless and confident in my skin. I equated clear skin with healthy skin because that’s how I was marketed to as a teen. At the time, I was chronically stressed and anxious. I had a hormonal imbalance (I was deficient in B

Gluten-Free Orange Blackberry Almond Scones

May 15, 2020 at 11:00AM Simple and sweet for the weekend — these berry scones come from Dr. Hyman’s cookbook, Food: What the Heck Should I Cook? We’ve learned more about how to be both paleo and plant-based through Dr. Hyman and this is just the kind of recipe that proves it’s possible…  Blackberries are one of my absolute favorite fruits—they’re a great source of vitamin C and contain many other antioxidants that are protective against inflammation, cancer, neurological diseases and more. Thanks to almond and millet flours, these scones are a nutrient-dense, lower-glycemic alternative to traditional scones that are made with refined flour and sugar, plus they provide healthy fats and protein to keep you satiated. Here’s What We Think of Lena Dunham’s ‘Well Enough’ Campaign

May 14, 2020 at 11:06AM During this time of overwhelming change, we’ve been hitting Instagram in a new way. We’ve muted a couple of those FOMO-inducing accounts and have done our best to flood your feed with messages to help ground and support you while we’re all at home. On one of our many Insta’ benders, we came across this post from creative multi-hyphenate, Lena Dunham explaining her own mental health struggles in a way we could all relate to. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Lena’s new #WellEnough hashtag is the message we all need right now. Since our own brand tagline is ‘a guide to living well’, Lena’s hashtag stood out to us. ‘Well enough’ — no message could be more spot on for this time and season. Although the term ‘wellness’ has often been misconstrued by brands and individuals looking to hijack their way in to anything that’s trending, wellness is a term that has helped us to define personal well-being beyond just our physical ‘health’ and on into areas of mental and emotional balance that make us up as a whole. Here’s what Lena shared on Instagram: “During this time, I’ve seen a lot of posts about how to be as efficient as the Google staff, how to exercise using, like, a can of beans, and how to cook very complex grainy breads and just generally fill our days with accomplishments. But I know for many people, like me, this just isn’t how life is. Every

The Best Way to Eat to Ward Off a Virus. Hands Down.

May 14, 2020 at 11:03AM We trust Donna Gates M.Ed., ABAAHP of Body Ecology implicitly when it comes to our health — gut health, especially. As one of our long-time health contributors, Gates, like so many of our other friends in wellness, offered to share insights to help us all optimize our immunity in this important time.  Donna’s legacy includes coining the phrase “inner ecosystem” to describe the still undiscovered network of microbes in our gut, now called the “microbiome.” The connection between our gut and immune systems is now one of the most important health studies of our time. Her advice below provides useful guidance to help us ward off viruses and keep our body’s in tip-top shape right now…  I’ve been on a mission for the past 30 years to change the way the world eats. And I’ve worked with hundreds of thousands of people helping them treat a multitude of issues that throw off their inner ecology.  Viruses, being antibiotic resistant, have always been tricky. Whether that be Epstein Barr, Herpes, Flu, Covid-19, they’re opportunistic, and if given the opportunity to pounce, they will.  So how are they given the opportunity to wreak havoc? An acidic environment with an immune system that is compromised.   Alkalizing the body, lowering inflammation and focusing on creating a robust immune system, are hands down the best ways to close the door on an opportunistic virus like Covid-19.  Let’s go over how to do that.  Donna Gate’s Antiviral Nutrition Protocol  Think of a

Lauren has helped us better understand the fascinating connection between our bodies and our emotions. Working with the fascia and lymphatic system, Lauren harnesses that knowledge to help so many of us achieve a more balanced, pain-free and svelte body, so — yes, we love Lauren and are not surprised to find that women everywhere are signing up for her Aligned Life Virtual Studio classes in droves while at home this spring. Read through Lauren’s own description of what foam rolling is all about below. It might be one of the simplest and best practices you ever pick up for yourself… Foam rolling is my secret weapon to getting a gorgeous, slimmer, more elegant posture and a strong body.  Most people think of the foam roller as a tool to roll out tight IT bands, but when used regularly, it can completely transform your body, posture, confidence and even your state of mind. The benefits of foam rolling extend far beyond just feeling good; the roller can also help to heal our fascia, which plays an important role in the overall structure of our bones and joints. The easiest way to explain how foam rolling works is to think about a rolling pin rolling out and smoothing dough. The foam roller works in a similar way in that when you put weight on

Life-Changing Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Cookies (Gluten-Free Too!)

May 13, 2020 at 10:40AM When food editor, Kat Odell tells us she has a cookie recipe we need to try, we grab a whisk without blinking. Lately, chocolate chip cookies with tahini have been the cookie du jour, but this little hazelnut chocolate chip version might just change all that… Like most people in the world, I love chocolate chip cookies. And, I believe people fall into two camps: those who reach for the chewy, gooey center, partially unbaked kind (me!), and those who prefer a crisp, crunchy bite. These gluten-free cookies––which, let me add, could convince any wheat-eater that there’s actual flour in there––are for those who prefer the former. Adding a nut butter as the cookie base, in this case hazelnuts, yields a super chewy cookie — so chewy, in fact, that the nut butter mimics the chew that the gluten in wheat typically imparts. I tried this recipe out with pretty much every nut that exists, and for me hazelnut was the most delicious. Other nuts, like macadamia, become too oily when blended into butter, and while they do yield a more neutral-tasting cookie, you’d need to add a tablespoon or so of tapioca starch to balance out the oiliness. So, if you make the below recipe and you find your batter to be too wet, you can add tapioca starch as a binder. I am confident that this recipe will remain in regular rotation because it is so damn delicious, and takes about 10 minutes

The Secret To Cut Arms? According To One Trainer It’s Shorter Workouts

May 12, 2020 at 11:00AM Thick, muscular arms from athletic workouts look great on some women, but most of us are looking to strengthen those bi’s and tri’s without too much bulking up. That can be a tricky fitness goal — and trainer Andrea Marcellus’ clients ask her how to achieve this all the time. We asked Marcellus to walk us through this often frustrating workout challenge and some of her tips might just surprise you…  Getting fit and getting “cut” do not necessarily go hand in hand. To be clear, fitness, health and all around-wellness come in all shapes and sizes. Please stop and give this fact a giant hug. That said, to answer the question about how to attain a certain appearance, namely to get “cut arms” in a healthy way, here’s the answer: do not over-exercise and instead focus on smaller food portions. Nothing is more demoralizing than working out like a crazy person, and lifting heavier and heavier weights in hopes of getting cut arms only to end up with arms that just seem to be bigger and bigger, but still lack definition. On fat storage + Planning Post-Workout Meals  One of the body’s favorite energy storage deposits is the back of the arms, as well as the abs, glutes and hips. The body naturally has some areas that are more prone to fat storage, i.e the belly in women as a protective layer for the reproductive system. Fat melts best with an active lifestyle and
