March 21, 2019 at 02:00AM by CWC Ever since the 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Schedule 1 drugs list, the once-maligned plant has developed an aura (a haze, even) of intrigue and excitement. Indeed, a small body of early research shows that compounds within hemp—including CBD, everyone’s favorite non-intoxicating cannabinoid—could be a helpful ally for those suffering from anxiety, poor sleep, and other modern woes, although more studies are needed to reach any definitive conclusions. But beyond the buzzwords, most of us still don’t know a whole lot about the hemp-based CBD products we’re putting into and onto our bodies, and how they could enhance our lifestyles in a holistic way. This is a problem, says Jessica Assaf, founder of Cannabis Feminist and a long-time clean beauty activist. “One of the greatest risks we see is that people think of CBD as this miracle cure-all,” she says. “We can’t just be using CBD in a bubble and not take care of our health in other ways.” Plus, she adds, there’s very little regulation or rigorous science in the CBD industry right now, and it’s hard for a buyer to tell whether any given product is legit. But an all-star trio hopes to change this by launching a new educational content platform called Prima, which has already raised over $3 million in venture capital funding. The site focuses on simple ways to optimize health on a holistic level and how plants like hemp can be layered into a broader self-care

Kale just joined the “Dirty Dozen” pesticide list for the first time in a decade
March 20, 2019 at 07:21AM by CWC I’ve never had to worry too much about kale. Unlike strawberries and spinach, which often contain the most pesticide residue, it’s never done me dirty, allowing me to make my green smoothies in peace. But the news I read this morning almost made me spit it out. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just released its rankings for the 2019 Dirty Dozen, a guide to pesticides and produce. Kale finds itself on the list for the first time since 2009, ranking third, right behind strawberries and spinach. Every year, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) tests 47 popular fruits and veggies, mimicking how a typical person might prepare produce at home. After reviewing 40,900 produce samples, the list is born. For kale, more than 92 percent of samples were found to contain at least two or more residues. Some of the samples collected contained residue from up to 18 different pesticides. “We were surprised kale had so many pesticides on it, but the test results were unequivocal,” Alexis Temkin, PhD, toxicologist for EWG, said in a press release. “Fruits and vegetables are an important part of everyone’s diet, and when it comes to some conventionally grown produce items, such as kale, choosing organic may be a better option.” Rounding out the Dirty Dozen are nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, and potatoes. Kale bumped sweet bell peppers off the list as the only change from last year. Before you strike kale from your diet,

Deliciously Ella’s new app is a one-stop shop for on-demand yoga and healthy desserts—am I in heaven?
March 19, 2019 at 04:00PM by CWC Upon first exploring plant-based food blog Deliciously Ella‘s newly minted app, I exclaimed, “My, oh, my! I can queue up an on-demand yoga class and learn how to make plant-based salted caramel sauce in the very same digital location.” The two major tabs of founder Ella Mills’ fresh creation are indeed “recipes” and “yoga.” Meaning, I could literally just eat salted caramel straight off the spoon while practicing camel pose. Casual. For $0.99 a month, users gain access to more than 400 recipes, many of which include tutorials (no more scratching your head if you need to “strain” cashews), and yoga sequences between 10 and 40 minutes in length. Mills plans to add new content each week. Scan through the app’s edible offerings, and you’ll find detailed instructions for peanut butter and raspberry porridge (“fly me to the moon”), butternut squash Wellington (“let me play among the stars”), and cacao mouse cake (“fill my heart with song”). I chose one entitled “Wake Up Energy.” The instructor guides me through several
Add major goddess vibes to your morning with this glow-inducing breakfast bowl
March 18, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC If your idea of a healthy breakfast begins and ends with berries and oatmeal because 1) it’s quick, and 2) it checks the box for your definition of “healthy,” we’ve got a recipe that’ll totally flip the script on how you view your first meal of the day. This Green Goddess Breakfast Bowl from The Well+Good Cookbook—available for preorder right now—is a veggie-loaded take on the traditional porridge brekky. And you can batch cook the nutty quinoa ahead of time for meal-prep magic. Madeleine Murphy, co-founder of Montauk Juice Factory and The End Brooklyn (yes, the place with the unicorn lattes), created the recipe when she noticed that her usual grab-and-go breakfasts just weren’t sustaining her through her hectic mornings. “As a busy entrepreneur, I’ve always known that a good breakfast is key to being able to feel aligned for a positive, successful day,” Murphy says. “What I love about this sort of non-traditional breakfast bowl is that it’s savory, filling—and I can do a lot of the prep the night before.” “What I love about this sort of non-traditional breakfast bowl is that it’s savory, filling—and I can do a lot of the prep the night before.” With this vegan and gluten-free breakfast, “you’ll start your day nourished, energized, light, and glowing—the way every goddess should!” says Murphy. A lot of props go to her Green Goddess Dressing, which ties the dish together and is brimming with ingredients the certified health coach says
These 50 genius outfit ideas are the antidote to end-of-winter wardrobe boredom
March 17, 2019 at 06:00AM by CWC Remember back in September, when we all could not wait to cozy up in our fall boots and chunky sweaters? That memory seems so naive now that we’re almost six months deep into cold weather—and on the 89th rotation of our favorite sweatpants. Yes, it’s officially that time of the season when you realize your well of new, cute outfit ideas is bone dry. Tempting as it may be, you don’t have to rush out and buy a bunch of new things to beat the boredom. As Ashley, the YouTuber known as bestdressed, demonstrates in this brilliant video, a few strategic styling tricks are all you need to refresh your closet. (And safeguard your tax refund.) In fact, she managed to create 50 killer outfits from pieces she already had—sustainability FTW! Do the math and you’ll realize those are enough options to get you into mid-May without having to repeat a look. Here are a few of the key takeaways from the video, which are worth bearing in mind next time you’re about to send an “I have nothing to wear…” SOS to your group text chain. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCOo8AW4oI0] 1. To get more wear out of your going-out dresses, add a turtleneck “I’ve seen a ton of 15-year-olds on Instagram who are cooler than I’ll ever be layering a turtleneck under a graphic t-shirt,” says Ashley. “But honestly, I have no idea how the f*** to do that without looking like a Target employee during
See ya, plastic—your faux-leather look is getting an earth-friendly upgrade
March 16, 2019 at 10:00AM by CWC My best friend was diagnosed with celiac disease when we were in high school, about six or seven years before gluten-free became mainstream. As her best friend, I had the distinct joy of trying out the (small amount of) gluten-free baked goods that were available at the time, and they were terrible. Flash forward, and TBH you can find some gluten-free goods that taste better than their wheat-based counterparts. I’m reminded of this as I try to put into words the trajectory of vegan leather. Before “sustainable fashion” became more mainstream, some of the only real leather alternatives you had were made out of new plastic. The first vegan leather jacket I purchased was, unfortunately, made out of 100 percent plastic. So, not only was it not great for the environment, it was also squeaky if I even slightly moved my arms. It also made me super sweaty because—surprise—plastic is not very breathable. In the many years since then, I’ve become a much more conscious consumer. So while leather is bad for the environment, just because a fabric is vegan doesn’t necessarily mean it’s environmentally friendly. Luckily, there has been innovation in recent years in leather alternative fabrics—they look like leather and feel like leather, but aren’t leather. They’re also better for the environment than leather and leather alternatives like plastic. They’re like the amazing gluten-free mini cake I had yesterday versus the cardboard-y gluten free bagel of 13 years ago. Only, you
Never skip breakfast again with this healthy and flavorful post-workout meal
March 16, 2019 at 02:00AM by CWC Brunch typically involves a sky-high stacks of pancakes, bagels slathered with cream cheese, breakfast burritos, and unlimited mimosas—satisfying in the moment, sure, but hard to stomach after a difficult workout. But what if I told you there’s a healthy post-workout meal that’s just as good and better for you? After Ellie Bullen of Elsa’s Wholesome Life finishes an exercise, she seeks a meal that’s going to nourish her body. And while she loves homemade vegan fried eggs and colorful smoothie bowls, nothing tops her Plant Power Bowl loaded with muscle-building plant protein. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ELLIE BULLEN ⋆ PLANT-BASED (@elsas_wholesomelife) on Mar 11, 2019 at 5:00am PDT //www.instagram.com/embed.js “It’s one of my favorite filling breakfasts—well kinda more like a breakfast and lunch or ‘brunch,’ as I like to have my first meal between 10am and 12pm after a coffee, workout, and some work,” she writes on Instagram. “It’s packed with plant protein, healthy fats, unrefined carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and lots of fiber.” Sounds like a winner, right? And the ingredients in this power bowl are simple. For the ultimate meal, she combines baked cinnamon pumpkin, kale, quinoa, a tofu scramble, avocado, hemp seeds, sprouts, almond feta, and a sweet and creamy maple and tahini sauce. Now she’s only missing one thing: a delicious mocktail to round out her healthy brunch. Find out why having pizza for breakfast might be healthier than cereal. The at-home ab workout that Jenna Dewan and Jessica Alba swear by
March 15, 2019 at 12:24PM by CWC If I could peek inside the fitness routines of any two celebrities, it would be Jenna Dewan and Jessica Alba. Not only are they both #girlcrush-worthy for approximately 3 billion reasons (I mean, have you seen Step Up? Have you used literally any product from The Honest Company?), but they are, simply, strong as hell. And, as I recently discovered, it’s for good reason: Both of these A-list actresses happen to share a trainer. FitOn resident celebrity trainer Jennifer “JJ Dancer” Johnson is the force behind their six-pack abs and killer dance moves of these two powerhouse women (if you have not watch the video of Jenna Dewan performing “Pony,” or seen Jessica Alba in my favorite movie of 2003, Honey, please stop what you’re doing right now to tune into both), and works with both of them strengthen and tone their screen-ready physiques. Here, Johnson shares three ab-busting moves that she uses with her star clients, and all you need to recreate them at home is two towels or a set of gliding disks. Walking planks (4 sets) What it works: The transverse layer of your abdominal muscles. “This will pull your abs in to give you a ‘snatched’ and tight look versus filling your abs out,” says Johnson. Step 1: Start in a high-plank pose, with the sliders under your feet Step 2: Holding the plank position and walk forward and backward eight times, making sure to stay parallel to the floor with a steady stance
Streetwear is stealing the 7/8 leggings look with ankle-cut denim
March 15, 2019 at 12:10PM by CWC Now, I don’t want to brag or anything, but I was rocking ankle-cut denim long before it was cool. It might have been due to being a middle school girl going through a major growth spurt in the 2000s, but still. Despite being plenty of options for different lengths in 2019 (#blessed), streetwear is bringing back the exposed ankle by stealing the 7/8 leggings look. Take that, childhood bullies. With the countdown to spring in full force, now’s the time to ditch your darks and try out the trendy light wash look that’s taking over the denim world. They don’t just pair perfectly with your wedges—that cut-off at the ankle also makes them a great option to wear with your favorite pair of sneakers, too. Plus, how can you say no to something that makes your current self super-confident and your younger, awkward self proud at the same time? Here are the best options to shop right now.
