February 13, 2019 at 02:18PM by CWC When someone says the words “ketogenic diet,” the first things that come to mind are probably butter, bacon, and avocados. That’s because the trendy diet has a rep for being heavy on the animal-based fats. (Just look up “ketogenic recipes” and you’ll see what I mean.) This makes the eating plan appealing to carnivores…but what about those of us who might want to reap some of those much-touted keto benefits (less brain fog, balanced hormones, healthy weight management, etc etc) without loading up on meat? Enter the “Ketotarian” diet, outlined by Will Cole, D.C., functional medicine practitioner in his book Ketotarian: The (Mostly) Plant-Based Plan to Burn Fat, Boost Your Energy, Crush Your Cravings, and Calm Inflammation. He essentially argues that it is possible to go plant based (or mostly plant based) while still sticking to a ketogenic diet. Color me intrigued! Here’s what you need to know: What is the Ketotarian diet? Ketotarian takes the traditional ketogenic diet and adds a plant-based, pescatarian twist. “It allows those who prefer to be more plant-based or have sensitivities to these foods to still take advantage of the benefits of ketosis,” says Cole. A high-fat, moderate protein and very low-carb eating plan, the Ketotarian diet eliminates meat and dairy and focuses on plant-centric sources of fats. It also allows some animal sources of protein and fats, including eggs, ghee, and fish—although those foods aren’t required. If you’re vegan, you don’t eat them on this plan; if

6 healthy sandwiches that are better than any wrap
February 13, 2019 at 09:52AM by CWC Back in the day, sandwiches were everything. Just think about your school lunches. All the good stuff packed up in your lunch box could be found between two slices of extra-fluffy white bread. Unfortunately, the cool-factor of sandwiches declined as fancy wraps made with spinach tortillas rose among the ranks. Well, here’s some good news: Healthy sandwiches are making a comeback. Instead of the bologna and cheese sandwiches of yesteryear, these healthy sandwiches are actually good for you. You don’t need packaged goods from the deli aisle of the supermarket (which, BTW, is not that great for you) to fill the space between your bread. And many food bloggers are jumping on the chance to give sandwiches a serious upgrade, creating creamy plant-based spreads and piling the wholesome ingredients high. The next time you’re planning your lunches for the week, give sandwiches another chance. With the right ingredients, you can reintroduce healthy sandwiches to the mix and kiss wraps goodbye. Here are 6 healthy sandwiches to inspire your next lunch View this post on Instagram BIG SANDWICH anyone? You know Elaine’s “big salad” in Seinfeld (if you’ve seen that episode)? California’s super bloom is too pretty for words—so here are 29 photos of it
February 12, 2019 at 12:37PM by CWC Raise your hand if you’re sick of winter. Recent months have brought about some of the coldest temperatures on record, not to mention devastating ice storms and ferocious blizzards. And unfortunately the snow doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. But there is a light at the end of this winter tunnel. As much of the country shovels the driveway, Southern California is gearing up for the super bloom. California is experiencing a winter of above-average precipitation with nearly 13 inches of rain since October—a whopping 167 percent more than the average. As a result, the Anza-Borrego Desert, located about 80 miles east of San Diego, is poised to burst with fields of poppies, lupines, and lilies as far as the eye can see. The last so-called “super bloom” splashed California with color in 2017. The California Department of Parks and Recreation reports the desert is already starting to bloom. More vibrant wildflowers are expected to show up in late February and early March, but you can get up-to-the-minute information via the Wildflower Hotline (760-767-4684). No matter where you are in the world, take in the beauty of California’s past super blooms with these 29 gorgeous photos. No captions needed. There are 51 million ASMR videos on YouTube, but these 9 will help you fall asleep fast
February 12, 2019 at 10:34AM by CWC There are so many different ways to get better sleep and to fall asleep faster—melatonin supplements, weighted blankets, the U.S. Army’s technique—but finding the one that works for you isn’t always easy. One trick you might not have considered is using ASMR to help you sleep. You’re probably thinking, “Wait, isn’t ASMR those YouTube videos that involve veggie-crunching and lip-smacking?” Why, yes—yes, it is. But it’s so much more than the sound of pickles being eaten way too close to a microphone. There are plenty of ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) videos to choose from online and the tingling sensations it causes might help you to finally get some quality shut-eye. According to the National Sleep Foundation, watching videos that feature quiet, calming sounds, like tapping of fingers or soft speaking, can help trigger a feeling of relaxation when you’re ready to sleep. We combed through millions of videos to select just nine of the very best that use ASMR to help you sleep. You’ll pass out like a baby tonight. Your guide to iron when you’re totally plant-based
February 11, 2019 at 01:26PM by CWC Welcome to 2019, where people are finally getting serious about eating more produce (hello, planetary health diet!). Shifting to a plant-based diet has many potential benefits, including reduced diabetes risk, better heart health, and a smaller carbon footprint. And don’t worry about getting enough protein: It’s actually not that hard to do as a vegetarian or vegan, as long as you’re getting protein from a variety of plant foods. However, there is one big thing plant-based eaters do need to be vigilant about: iron. Specifically, getting enough of it in their day-to-day diet. “Iron is necessary for many cellular functions, but most notably, iron is key for helping myoglobin and hemoglobin deliver oxygen to body tissues,” says Katherine Pett, M.S., R.D., nutritionist for Conagra Brands and blogger at Nutrition Wonk. (Your cells and tissues need oxygen to convert food into useable energy, so it’s safe to say that iron is essential to every part of the body.) “While our bodies efficiently recycle most of our iron stores, some is naturally lost every day from sloughing of skin and the lining of our intestines, sweating, and menstruation,” says Pett. If you don’t have enough iron in your body, that can cause iron deficiency anemia, says Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area. “Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, pale skin, irritability, low appetite, and feelings of lightheadedness.” Long term, it can lead to increased risk of heart
This “name-your-own-rate” hotel is basically the Everlane of travel
February 11, 2019 at 12:26PM by CWC Like getting your friends to show up to brunch on time, the discovery of a truly excellent product or service with a reasonable price is especially rare. Several retail companies vie for your attention with creative pricing strategies. Everlane, for example, offers some of its clothing in a “Choose What You Pay” section in lieu of sales, explaining exactly where every dollar you spend ends up. And in the travel industry, the new “name-your-own-rate” SCP Hotel is hoping its bet on transparency and accountability pays off. SCP (short for “soul, community, planet”) recently opened its first location in Colorado Springs. The entire place is eco-friendly and features a 12,000-square-foot fitness center, group fitness classes, a market with locally-sourced (and vegan-forward!) food and drink, 174 rustic rooms with reclaimed wood accents, a communal area with WiFi, and plants galore. Hey, they’re calling it “holistic hospitality” for a reason. All its amenities aside, one of the most remarkable features of the SCP Hotel is its commitment to “fair trade pricing.” If the price you initially agreed to pay doesn’t align with the quality of your experience, you can negotiate a lower rate. Suggested rates fall between $90 and $200 per night, depending on the season. “We’re committed to delivering exceptional guest experiences at a fair price. We’re confident that if our guests have a great stay at our hotels and pay a fair price, they’ll walk away happy and hopefully tell their friends about our concept,” chief
Sustainable travel tips to keep your vacays great without compromising the world you want to see
February 11, 2019 at 10:49AM by CWC Travel may well be good for your health, but it’s not so great for the environment. In fact, a recent study showed that tourism accounts for nearly 10 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But before you despair becoming a hypocrite who petitions lawmakers to take climate change seriously while simultaneously planning as many trips as possible for 2019, take comfort in knowing that even environmentalists travel—they simply do so mindfully. Below, experts share their tried-and-true eco-friendly tips for reducing your carbon footprint on the road. And remember, as with most things that are green, the simple steps aren’t only kind to the environment, but also to your wallet and your health. Keep reading to reduce the environmental impact of your 2019 travels. Photo: Getty Images/hedgehog94 Before you go 1. Donate or freeze leftover fresh foods It can feel nearly impossible to plan pre-vacation groceries perfectly; somehow, something is almost always leftover to rot in the fridge. While these wasted veggies, fruits, or animal proteins might amount to just a few dollars of lost cash, such food waste has a more significant environmental cost. According to Kathryn Kellogg of Going Zero Waste, 20 percent of the food in America goes to landfills, where it’s unable to decompose because it’s trapped by inorganic matter (e.g. trash bags). These preserved organics then release methane, which is a huge contributor to climate change. To minimize your contribution to this problem, zero-waste expert Celia Ristow of
