September 02, 2020 at 12:24PM While some of the year’s biggest social events are now tentatively going ahead, it’s fair to say that they won’t quite be the same. Masks will be worn, social distancing measures put in place and air kissing swapped out for elbow bumps. However, there is one thing that remains the same and that’s beautiful outfits. This week Cate Blanchett has become the ultimate embodiment of this, making her entrance at the Venice Film Festival in what can only be described as the ultimate cool-girl, tailored get-up. Cate has got the balance just right: she looks pulled together yet not ostentatious, trend-led yet not clad in designer It-buys. With a pair of white tailored trousers styled with a classic white shirt, black roll neck and navy blazer, it has definite nautical vibes (well, she is standing on a pier, after all) and is ideal for this tricky in-between season period. We have a feeling that there’ll be plenty more where this came from, so keep checking up on Who What Wear to see the latest Venice Film Festival looks. But, for now, scroll down to see Cate Blanchett‘s winning outfit and shop similar items. 7 Wedding Guest Trends I Can’t Wait to Try in 2021
September 02, 2020 at 08:00AM In March, weddings were put on hold for several months. And while we can now attend nuptials for no more than 30 people, if you had an extensive array of RSVPs for 2020, then you’ll know that many couples postponed their big day until next year. This means that while you didn’t get to celebrate this year, you can start planning your wedding guest dress for the following. At Who What Wear, we lovedresses (you might have noticed), so it gives me great pleasure to look through all the biggest dress trends of this year and the coming season to pick out the more suitable pieces for a wedding. Keep scrolling for our guide to the best wedding guest dress trends for 2020 and beyond. Style Notes: As seen on Ellie of Slip into Style, this is all about floral dresses that have something fun about them, whether it’s bold colours, big sleeves or oversize shoulders. Style Notes: Take it from us: The minidress is back. Go for long sleeves or a high neck to keep it looking elegant. Style Notes: Want a neckline that will always make you feel confident? Try the square neck. Style Notes: Perhaps a more controversial choice, head-to-toe red is a huge trend for autumn/winter 2020. That said, if you’re worried it’ll look like you’re trying to upstage the bride, you can always check on the dress code. Style Notes: Minimalists, if you’re looking for a dress you’ll get loads of wear from, then it’s the two-tone
The Designer Bags That We Really Love In 2020
September 02, 2020 at 06:29AM At the beginning of the year, we already knew which designer bags were going to dominate in 2020. How did we predict correctly? Well, it’s a lot more than just guesswork. We spend time speaking to brands and buyers and looking at what’s trending in the fashion industry to see which bags are going to come out on top during the year. Of course, cult buys and new brands can emerge at any moment, surprising even the most seasoned of fashion buyers and editors, but there are certain new styles that I guarantee we’ll be talking about as hero buys this December. That said, we didn’t know the pandemic was coming and the financial implications of that on the fashion industry and personal budgets. However, despite this, global fashion search platform Lyst revealed just yesterday in its roundup of the most popular brands of the year so far that the likes of Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Prada and more appear in the top 10. So which totes have made an impact on the year so far? There’s Chanel’s 19 that just might become as iconic as the legendary 2.55 bag, and Bottega Veneta is set to have a year just as golden as the last. Every buyer I spoke to told me they just can’t order enough Bottega bags. There’s also Katie Holmes’s favourite label Khaite, which has released a practical tote that makes teeny-tiny mini bags look sillier than ever. A mood we are seeing across
Sorry, Summer—We’re a Bit Distracted by These 5 Autumn Colour Trends
September 02, 2020 at 06:13AM It might only be the first week of September and, yes, summer wares may still line the shelves of our favourite high street stores, but we can’t help but notice that the new-in sections are slowly but surely being infiltrated by autumn pieces—from trans-seasonal jackets to sturdy boots—and we’re not going to lie, we’re pretty excited about it. There are a few colours that inevitably dominate every single autumn, however, there are some new additions that are set to make a splash this September. While last year everyone lost it over browns and khakis, this year it’s more about colour binaries: think lime green rubbing shoulders with burnt orange, and pale beige put into relief by fashion editor black (yes we know it’s not technically a colour but… fashion). Of course, we don’t like to be too prescriptive about these things, but if you think about it, giving a nod to a new season hue is surely one of the easiest ways to freshen up your wardrobe. After all, you probably already own at least one piece in one of the below shades, so it’s merely a case of experimenting with new combinations—for example, why not try a lime green knit with a pleated beige skirt? Or pack a punch with a head-to-toe black ensamble? So, if you’re desperate for a little autumnal inspo, keep scrolling to see the five colours that we are most excited to wear for the new season and 16 pieces that you can wear already. Style Notes: Offering a stylish alternative to last year’s muted browns and beiges, pale beige is
I’m a Beauty Editor, and These Are My Top Product Picks From My Stash
September 02, 2020 at 06:09AM Every beauty editor has a stash. The varying factors are the level of organisation, location and size of said stash. But we all have one. It’s filled with the almost daily drops of samples that we receive to write about and review, the beauty products that we actually buy and the ones that our well-meaning aunts still insist on getting us for Christmas. We’re all very aware of the privileged position we’re in and have many strategies in place to make sure products are never wasted. One being a ban on any newbies until I’ve made my way through most of what I have. So as lockdown started and I wasn’t near any of my friend’s or family member’s faces to slather them in moisturisers, I hit pause on writing and sampling and decided to shop my own stash. I scrolled past all of my fellow beauty writers trying out the latest launches, while I dived into the boxes under my bed. Four months in and I’ve not bought anything nor had any cravings, thanks to these products that I’ve fallen in love with all over again. Keep scrolling for my top picks. I’ve been using this everyday and I attribute much of my new found radiance to this. I find exfoliants rather boring, but it’s an essential part of my routine. This one really works to clear out anything that’s secretly stuck in my pores and I find it gentle enough for daily use. My hair can’t get enough of
4 Autumn Shoe Styles the Fashion Set Is Already Embracing
September 02, 2020 at 06:03AM The way we view footwear has had a complete overhaul throughout this year. After spending months house-bound wearing a rotation of either slippers or sneakers, the idea of dressing up and experimenting with new shoes feels more appealing than ever. While I once dreaded having to wear heels or agonised over which boots deserved my attention, after spending the better part of the last 6 months indoors, the concept of choosing a shoe seems like an exhilarating new adventure. Thankfully, with autumn on its way, which means there are a few new trends to focus on. From chain embellishments to Mary-Jane silhouettes, contrast soles to very high, knee highs, autumn footwear trends range from revamped classics to innovative new styles. And with the A/W 20 runways as inspiration, these trends have been reimagined across high-street and designer brands. So who is leading the way for footwear in 2020? Unsurprisingly, Bottega Veneta is on board with several of autumn’s most trending styles, including chain details and contrast soles. Victoria Beckham, Proenza Schouler and more are advocates of the over-the-knee boots, while modern Mary Janes were seen on the runway of Prada, Miu Miu and more. The Only High Street Autumn Buys You Need To See This Season
September 02, 2020 at 06:00AM It’s officially September, which means one thing: Autumn is on its way. Luckily the high street has started to deliver on the new season front, with plenty of pieces that adhere to 2020’s ‘less-is-more’ mantra. If you’ve read our autumn/winter trend guide, you’ll know that the traditional concept of ‘trends’ is feeling less and less fitting in the contemporary fashion landscape, and it’s timeless silhouettes and classic colourways that are coming to the fore. I would imagine that many of you will already have pieces in your wardrobe which match up with one or more of the new season picks below, and therein lies the beauty of the season ahead: It’s all about investing in well-thought-through buys that you will love for many seasons to come. Think camel-coloured coats, high-waisted jeans, roll neck knits and knee-high boots. At the top of our wishlist is H&M’s achingly chic wool-blend coat with attached scarf, Arket’s cream knitted vest and Whistles brown hiking boots. Scroll down to see and shop the full edit. If You’re On the Hunt for New Knitwear—Start With These H&M Knits
September 01, 2020 at 11:00AM I think I speak for everyone when I say I’m relieved that we’re a third through this year—2020 can do one, as far as I’m concerned. As if hearing our collective exhaustion at the year that keeps on taking, the weather has shifted to be enjoyably cold (by that I mean crisp, bright sunshine with the occasional freezing wind). This means one thing: it’s knitwear season. While the summer was for loose cotton dresses, shorts and padded shoulder vests, now it’s all about investing in the knitwear we’ll be wearing well into 2021. Personally, I’ll be stocking up on those jumpers and cardigans I’ll wear for many years to come—think cream cable knits, grey cashmere and striped nautical-style pullovers. There’s no doubt, however, that many of us are living on a tighter budget than before, but there are options. High-street favourite H&M has really delivered this season with a range of future classics that are primed for wearing with anything in your wardrobe. There’s a belted off-white cashmere cardigan and a greige thick ribbed knit which I know I’d wear all the time, but the piece I have my eye on is the cream knitted vest—wear oversized with a men’s shirt and leather trousers for the full 2020 look. 19 Beauty Products That Smell So Good You Might as Well Be at a Spa
July 05, 2020 at 08:30PM If I have one area of expertise within my field, it’s smellies. While some beauty editors pride themselves on their textbook knowledge of the epidermis or their Katie Jane Hughes–style makeup abilities (I have a bit of the former, and none of the latter), I pride myself on my ability to rate every great-smelling beauty product from 1 to10 on everything from texture and scent to results and efficacy, all from memory. It’s a bit niche, I know, but I’m not going to fight it. My love for baths and body care is no secret, and although I really do appreciate a lengthy ritual, it’s the mouth-watering scents that really do it for me. And sure, experts will always have something to say about heavy fragrances in products, but it’s important to remember that not all scented beauty products are made equal, with some being better for your skin than others. More recently, as I have found my stress levels rising and my mind and soul have demanded more “me” time than ever before, I have found myself reaching for my most-coveted smellies almost daily. I find that not only do they help bring some delight to otherwise mundane tasks (like scrubbing your entire body), but the scents themselves also help to evoke a feeling of calm and clarity. And yes, there is some science behind why great-smelling beauty products make us feel good (it’s all to do with aromatherapy and hormones), but frankly, right now, I don’t think it
25 Little Black Dresses for Timeless Summer Style
July 05, 2020 at 11:24AM The little black dress used to be synonymous with slinky, thigh-grazing, body-con frocks. These days, I’d argue that the LBD is more of a state of mind—it’s less overtly seductive but rather quietly alluring. Because not everyone wants, or even feels comfortable, wearing a look-at-me dress. (Although, of course, if that’s your thing, more power to you.) The notion of feeling sassy means different things to different people. It might be a tied waist, a flash of décolletage or a glimpse of shoulder. For that reason, I’ve created an edit of my favourite LBDs with a 2020 twist. Some are classic mini, but rest assured there are also midi dresses, slips and some that have subtle details to make you feel chic but slinky. This piece was published at an earlier date and has since been updated. Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends you need to know. Author Elinor Block | Whowhatwear Selected by CWC
