September 20, 2019 at 02:16PM by CWC Raise your hand if you’ve always been under the impression that your “core” and your “abs” are basically the same thing. After all, you know that a plank works your core, and a plank also works your abs, so if A equals B, then B must equal A…right? Not quite. Your core is actually just a nickname for the group of muscles that runs through the center of your body, and your abs are just one small piece of them. The actual number of muscles that comprise your core varies a bit depending on what you include (and who you ask), but according to Lee Wratislaw, manager of digital programming at Gold’s Gym, it’s at least fourteen (you’ll find ’em below). “The core is the system of muscles that stabilize, align, and move the trunk of the body,” says Wratislaw. This, he explains, is what allows for proper posture and movement patterns throughout your body. “A well-developed set of core muscles will prevent injury, improve posture, and deliver better balance and coordination. Strengthening the core will also prevent lower back pain and other hip and knee complications.” Think of your core as your center of gravity: Every movement in your body starts with this group of muscles, and making them stronger can help with most everything you do. There are three different “systems” throughout your core—the global stabilization system, the local stabilization system, and the movement system—which are each made up of different

The astrological reason your expectations are out of this world right now
September 20, 2019 at 02:00PM by CWC Ten years ago, Obama was sworn in as president, Glee was the show to watch, and you couldn’t escape the Black Eyed Peas’ Boom Boom Pow on the radio. It was also the beginning of a Jupiter-Neptune cycle that began in May-December of that year… and tomorrow, September 21, 2019, we enter the closing square. “Something seeded during this time is at a turning point phase of development and will need your attention,” says astrologer Amy Tripp. “Squares show tension that must be resolved through direct action. With both planets in their sign of rulership this is an especially potent square.” Get ready for some tension between reality and your expectations. Take special note if you are a Sagittarius, Pisces, Virgo, or Gemini—you’re going to be most impacted by this square. “There is an opportunity to be more flexible and open to other possibilities during this transit,” says Tripp. It’s also an “optimistic, enthusiastic, dream-inducing transit that expands the belief that you can make something that is your ideal, real. The tension is in the uncertainty of knowing if the dream is really tangible or if it is just a seductive fantasy,” she explains. I mean, I feel like that is the struggle of my life everyday, but also I am a Pisces so do with that what you will. “You may find you are more generous and charitable, but it is a good idea to make sure you are not being taken
Crying at work is only stigmatized because offices cater to the male experience
September 20, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC Though it’s not an everyday occurrence, I wont lie to you: I’ve done my fair share of crying at work. I’m human being who sometimes finds work to be emotionally exhausting, and sometimes tears are my reaction to that. That said, I’ve always strived to avoid these cry sessions. But I’m done—crying is a biological trait that I should be allowed to express so long as it doesn’t compromise my work or distract others. I’m a working woman who has bigger fish to fry—like the gender pay gap, imposter syndrome, and unequal division of labor—than defending my right tear up at my desk. So I hereby call for the normalizing of crying at work without worrying about how I am perceived or whether letting the tears flow will kneecap my career trajectory as a result. After all, it’s natural to cry every now and then. So, why is it that I’m so keen to button up my emotions for fear of making my manager and co-workers wonder if I’m solid, strong, and capable? In large part, the reason is thanks to an old guard standard of work. (Hint: It’s the same reason office temperatures are always so freaking cold.) That’s right—since office situations have historically been male-dominated, they cater to the male experience with and reaction to crying. For her book It’s Always Personal: Navigating Emotion in the New Workplace, Anne Kreamer surveyed 700 people and found 41 of women have cried at
These are the 9 healthiest items to order at P.F. Chang’s, according to a dietitian
September 20, 2019 at 12:00PM by CWC Whether you live in a big city with literally hundreds of hole-in-the-wall Chinese places or a suburb with just a handful of hidden gems, people still flock to P.F. Chang’s as if it’s the only place in town serving up fried rice and wontons. Haters will say it’s because the chain—which has over 200 locations in the US—is almost always in a mall, drawing upon a customer base that just got too hungry while shopping at Pottery Barn to venture any further out. But that’s not why your local P.F. Chang’s always has a crowd. The thing is, it’s honestly really good. So good in fact that the chain has ventured into the world of frozen food so people can try to replicate their favorite restaurant dishes at home. Delicious, yes. But healthy? Well, like virtually every restaurant, some menu items are better than others. The P.F. Chang’s menu is about the size of a pocket dictionary, making it hard to zero in on the items that are truly healthy, and even more difficult if you follow a specific eating plan, such as keto, vegetarian, or gluten-free. That’s where registered dietitian Chelsey Amer, RD, comes in. Here, she reveals the healthiest items on the menu for the three aforementioned eating plans, which can also serve as a blueprint to healthy eating at the restaurant regardless of what your food ethos is. Ready to see what she picked? Keep reading to find out. Ketogenic
Don’t have an ingestible beauty routine? Here’s why you might want to start one
September 20, 2019 at 04:30AM by CWC No matter how personally accomplished you feel after completing all the steps of your skin-care routine, you might want to hold on your mental high five until you’ve added one last step. According to John P. Salerno, MD the medical director at Salerno Center NYC, if your serums and moisturizers aren’t lined up next to ingestible supplements in your medicine cabinet, you could be missing out. Translation: Your topical efforts might not be as effective as they could be if you aren’t supporting them at the source of your skin’s woes, says Dr. Salerno—AKA, in your cells. “Ingestible beauty can help increase collagen protection as well as help limit free radicals, supporting our skin at the cellular level, from the inside out,” Dr. Salerno explains. “Thus, it has the potential to be more powerful than a topical option.” “[Ingestible beauty] has the potential to be more powerful than a topical option.” The ingredient he cites for cellular support is CoQ10, an antioxidant found in supplements like MitoQ that helps your body create cellular energy and neutralize free radicals, according to Dr. Salerno. And since free radicals are basically the arch nemesis of skin-care lovers everywhere, CoQ10 could help you work toward a generally glowier complexion. “Internally, free radicals caused by environmental factors [such as UV radiation and pollution] can cause damage to the skin if not managed by the body’s own supply of antioxidants, including CoQ10,” Dr. Salerno says. “This can lead to
What being on the perfectionist, indecisive Virgo-Libra cusp means for your personality
September 20, 2019 at 02:00AM by CWC Each month with On the Cusp, we point our astrological magnifying glass on all the people born between two zodiac signs. Because when your birthday falls at either the tail end or the very beginning of your sun sign’s season, your personality may be influenced by your cosmic neighbor. As we lean toward the fall equinox and seasons shift, Virgo (August 23 to September 22) and Libra (September 23 to October 23) compete for the astrological spotlight. Below, Stefanie Iris Weiss, astrologer and co-author of Surviving Saturn’s Return: Overcoming the Most Tumultuous Time of Your Life, explains what happens when zodiac’s perfectionist queen Virgo blends with just and fair Libra. The scales are tipping toward Libra season, meaning it’s time to kiss away those last vestiges of summer and wave goodbye to the reign of Virgo. Well, unless you’re born on the Virgo Libra cusp, that is. If that’s the case, you teeter between both cosmic worlds and may live life in a bit of a neurotic power struggle. “The autumnal equinox reminds us that these cusp babies are in a constant quest for balance,” Weiss tells me. “Many misunderstand the nature of Libra—assuming that because the sign’s glyph is the scales, they’ve always got it under control. The truth is that Libras are always searching for that ever-elusive balance. And when they’re born near the cusp of Virgo, they tend to experience this anxiety more acutely.” “Libras are always searching for that ever-elusive
Here’s what Simone Biles eats every day to power through Olympic flips and feats
September 20, 2019 at 01:00AM by CWC For the average person, hitting their major macronutrient requirements is a daily goal. For Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, it’s a non-negotiable. You certainly don’t land a triple double on the floor or a double-double on the beam without having the energy necessary to power those moves. (And okay, intense dedication and talent.) Besides coordination, gymnastics takes incredible arm, core, and quad strength. When Well+Good hung out with the four-time Olympic gold medalist and Candid brand ambassador, we couldn’t resist asking her…what the heck do you eat? Here, Biles shares what an average day of eating looks like for her in the midst of training and competitions. Is her eating as balanced as her beam routine? Keep reading to find out. Not a nutrition bar. It’s waffles. “What I eat depends on the day and how I’m feeling, but sometimes I like to get up and have a protein waffle in the morning for breakfast with some fruit,” she says. Um, way more satisfying than anything that fits in your purse. To sip on the safe side of sleeping, here’s the time of day you should stop drinking coffee
September 20, 2019 at 12:01AM by CWC Some people swear they can drink coffee all day—even after dinner—and still drift off to sleep minutes after their head hits the pillow. Others won’t touch caffeine at all after early afternoon, saying if they did, they’d be “up all night.” My colleague’s doctor advised her to should stop drinking coffee by 10 a.m. in order to avoid disrupting her sleep cycle. But is there a specific time of day when we should cut ourselves off from caffeine? To find out when exactly when to put down the mug, I turned CEO and co-founder of FitnessGenes Dan Reardon, MD, who has studied how coffee affects different people. “The speed at which you metabolize caffeine creates a natural cut off point through the day,” he says. “Whereas a fast metabolizer might clear 100-200 milligrams—what’s in a typical cup of coffee—in just a few hours, it might take a slow metabolizer 12-hours plus, which could impact sleep.” If you’re a fast coffee metabolizer, Dr. Reardon recommends having your last cup by 5 p.m. (Sorry, coffee isn’t recommended for anyone much later.) “Let’s not forget that even for a fast metabolizer of caffeine, there could still be a cumulative effect of drinking lots of coffee early in the day, which could slow down the rate at which they break down their caffeine later,” he says. If you are a fast metabolizer who enjoys multiple cups a day, he says, cut yourself off by lunchtime so your
The failproof way to ensure your manicure never grows out before you’re ready
September 19, 2019 at 11:14PM by CWC I’m the queen of chipped nails. Between all the cooking, typing, and tending to my urban jungle, it’s not uncommon for me to pay my manicurist a visit between appointments. But that was before I realized I could save time and money by reaching for a Sharpie instead. Shailene Woodley admits doesn’t always have time for touch-ups between manicures (she’s just like us!), and she told Well+Good her secret to maintaining a mani fresh despite her inordinately busy celebrity schedule. When she knows she won’t have time for a manicure for a while, she paints her nails with black polish and keeps a black Sharpie on hand. Anytime Woodley has a chip or needs to fill in a spot where her nails have grown out, it’s an easy way to get a near-flawless touch-up without a mess—and it only takes a second. This best part about this hack is that it works with nearly all of ’em. If you want to ensure your manicure never grows out before you’re ready—or fill in any chips that come up!—choose one of these polishes to match to a variety of Sharpie colors. Is it the perfect solution? No, but it’s damn close. Make your avo toast do the most by using this inflammation-fighting bread
September 19, 2019 at 10:30PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV93_CA35mI] Paleo bread is possible thanks to this delicious recipe. “Help, I’m eating so much avocado toast,” is a real Slack message I sent to one of my coworkers the other day. I had gone to Trader Joe’s while hungry, and bought a loaf of bread—a rare occurrence for me, since I typically follow a grain-free lifestyle. But on the other hand, bread is delicious, especially with avocado on top. I miss it in my everyday life. Thankfully, I can now have my toast and eat it too with this grain-free, inflammation-fighting Paleo bread recipe, courtesy of chefs Mia Rigden and Jenny Dorsey. “To enjoy Paleo bread, you don’t have to be a hardcore Paleo person,” Rigden says on the latest episode of Well+Good’s Alt-Baking Bootcamp series. “What I like about it is you’re getting some protein and there aren’t any refined carbohydrates or grains that are going to spike your blood sugar levels.” Beyond being gluten-free, the Paleo bread they make has some major health benefits. One of the key ingredients to get the alt-flour mixture right is flaxseed. “Ground flaxseeds, and flaxseeds in general, are super high in fiber which is great for your digestion,” Rigden explains. “It also helps to keep us full and it’s a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are highly anti-inflammatory.” So not only are you avoiding potentially inflammatory substances, you’re upping the ante by incorporating an ingredient that fights back against inflammation.
