Self-Isolation Diary: How Smythe’s Designers Are Co-Running Their Brand During Quarantine

May 06, 2020 at 03:17PM With people around the country now in Week 8 of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. This week, we’re hearing from Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe, co-founders and designers of womenswear brand Smythe. The two are self-isolating in Toronto in their respective homes, faced with the challenges of running a brand while social distancing, maintaining team morale, grappling with an uncertain future and more. Here’s how they’re doing it. How are you running your business from home? What sort of routine works best for you?  Andrea Lenczner: We started with daily conference calls that became daily Zoom calls that became 3x a week Zoom calls. They happen at 10am while the kids are on-line learning. I have been moving around the house trying to figure out the best work “station.” I’m in my third (and hopefully final) spot in the kitchen. Christie Smythe: I take all calls from my car since my house is open concept and it’s the only way to ensure focus and quiet. Everyone is used to seeing me on video calls in my car with a toque on. Last week, I even did my quarterly shareholders meeting from the car. I also started a daily COVID work

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Just Introduced Us to the Coolest Minimalist Brand

May 06, 2020 at 12:23PM Here at Who What Wear, we monitor Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s style very closely. Whether she’s championing the latest bodysuit by Khaite, or expertly pairing her must-have Bottega Veneta mules alongside the brand’s sellout clutch, you can guarantee we know (and have probably written an article) about it. That’s why we were particularly excited to discover the model’s latest brand obsession: Low Classic. In a recent Instagram upload, Rosie posted nine new outfit photos—five of which included a piece of clothing by Low Classic. How’s that for an endorsement? The model seems to have a particular affinity for the brand’s outwear, as she was pictured wearing a utility jacket, a beige blazer and a leather blazer by the brand. In fact, the utility jacket was featured in multiple outfits—worn open, zipped up and belted. Naturally, we decided to do a little digging and track down items by the brand ourselves. Turns out the Seoul-based label is stocked on Browns, Farfetch, Moda Operandi and more, and also happens to be a lot more affordable than Rosie’s other favourite labels, such as The Row and Bottega Veneta. Keep scrolling to see how Rosie has styled her Low Classic jackets, and then shop the brand’s outerwear below. Next up, the biggest S/S 20 fashion trends you need to know. What We’ve Been Eating

May 06, 2020 at 12:00PM I’ve been doing a rough meal plan for each week and it’s been helpful to organize the fresh meals, frozen meals, ingredients we have on hand to use up, Plenty nights, and plan some takeout nights. All three weeks we have steered off course quite a bit for random reasons. In the above, for example,… The post What We’ve Been Eating appeared first on Kath Eats Real Food. Adele’s Birthday Dress Is From the Coolest Under-the-Radar Brand

May 06, 2020 at 11:00AM Fair play to Adele, she doesn’t often use social media and post much about her life but when she does, boy do we notice. Just a mere six hours ago the singer shared a picture celebrating her birthday (it was yesterday) and wore one of the coolest dresses we’ve seen in a while—definitely a spring/summer 2020 trend. A little bit of investigation led us to discover that the mini puff-sleeved frock is by lesser-known designer brand Elzinga. While Adele opted for an LBD, the brand is actually packed full of bold colours from sunset oranges to pinks and lime greens. It’s unsurprising when you consider the origins of the label—it was created by Amsterdam-based musician and performer Lieselot Elzinga and the line is inspired by live performances. The trademark silhouettes incorporate voluminous styling with puff sleeves on dresses and blouses, tapered-leg trousers and oversized poplin shirts with big pussy-bows. While Adele might not have posted anything in nearly five months, she’s already made an impact to our wardrobes. That, dear reader, is how you do it. Keep scrolling to see Adele’s look, shop her dress and then see the full Elzinga line.  Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends you need to know.  Author Elinor Block | Whowhatwear Selected by CWC

Dairy-free gluten-free tuna casserole

May 06, 2020 at 11:32AM This healthy tuna casserole is gluten-free, dairy-free, and high in protein! It’s a perfect family and kid-friendly dinner for a busy weeknight. This casserole is made from pantry staples and is a great make-ahead dinner option. I feel like we’re in a weird time warp right now. Everything has slowed way down and I feel like the kids are getting a small taste of what life was like when I was a kiddo. They play outside until it gets too hot, we take long walks and bike rides, we crash madre’s pool, watch nostalgic movies, camp in a tent on the weekends, and they FaceTime their friends for an insane amount of time. (Listening to P talk to her BFF is the cutest ever. They play Candyland or Pretty Pretty Princess and show each other pretty much every single toy they own.) Vintage meals are back, too, thanks to our pantry haul and freezer staples we’ve had on hand. I don’t think I’ve had tuna casserole since I was maybe 10 years old (madre used to make an awesome one, I tell ya), and since we had all of the ingredients, I decided to go for it. The girls love pretty much anything that consists of cheese and pasta noodles, and this cheesy chicken and rice casseroles is one of their favorite meals. (<— I never would have expected that one.) It’s so easy to make, too! Simply sauté the mushrooms, onions and garlic, make

This Is How to Do an Expert-Approved Manicure at Home

May 06, 2020 at 10:30AM I’m not sure about you, but my nails are not in a good way right now. My hands are dry, my cuticles are rock hard, and the nail snags are out of control. All in all, it’s safe to say they need some real help. If floods of social media posts are anything to go by, it would seem that I am not alone in my nail conundrum. Because it doesn’t look like salon visits will be an option for at least a little while, it’s time to take matters into our own hands (pun totally intended). To guide you through every single step, I’ve enlisted the help of celebrity manicurist Jenni Draper to reveal exactly how to carry out a salon-esque manicure on yourself at home. You can thank me later. When it comes to doing our own nails, this is the part that most of us decide to skip. It’s not particularly glam, it can be a little uncomfortable, and, all in all, it’s just a bit annoying. Unfortunately, though, prepping your nails before you get painting is what really sets a good mani apart from the rest.  After you’ve removed any old polish with remover (ideally non-acetone to prevent drying), start off by addressing your cuticles. “Apply some cuticle cream and massage it in. Using a cuticle pusher, start gently pushing them back, one by one,” advises Draper. And although it might be tempting, she also warns that trimming your cuticles at home should be avoided.

Notes On The Journey of Motherhood with Tastemaker Paige Appel

May 06, 2020 at 10:14AM Mother’s Day is not a one-size-fits-all holiday. We begin celebrating as children and that experience can be as varied as the women we’re celebrating. Through out our lives, with the wild variety of family dynamics, births and deaths, pursuits of becoming mothers and fathers ourselves, and the experience of being the mother celebrated, Mother’s Day can surely take on many forms. Part of our TCM community, tastemaker and shop owner, Paige Appel opened up to share her fertility and pregnancy journey over the last two years. What a difficult holiday this can be for the large population of women with complicated fertility journeys. We thought Appel would make a great profile as we approach this unique Mother’s Day at home. Both her ‘miracle baby’, Cricket who is something for the world to behold and her precious teen, Rem give Paige the street cred to speak to mothering while in quarantine and embracing the journey of motherhood wherever it may find you… The Chalkboard: Paige, you were really open about your fertility struggles before cricket was born. Talk to us about that season: Paige Appel: What a season that was! I will never forget the struggle or the pain that maximized itself for those three years. The ignorance about my body’s state of the union, the vulnerability to lean into the process of intervention, the desire that manifested into surrender… it was quite a magnificent storm. After two miscarriages I went down the road of Western

Mediterranean Orzo Salad with Feta

May 06, 2020 at 10:00AM This simple and fresh Mediterranean Orzo Salad with Feta is perfect for a summer potluck or quick weekday lunch. Packed full of veggies and flavor this vegetarian dish is easily meal-prepped and will last all week. One of the things I didn’t realize when we moved from San Francisco to Marin was how much better the weather would be. I’ve talked about it here before but one of the biggest misconceptions about San Francisco is that it gets typical “California” weather. In fact, San Francisco rarely gets above 70 degrees and the summers tend to be the coldest time of the year. While I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Karl the Fog and genuinely believe San Francisco is the greatest city in the world (many will disagree with me on this and I understand why!), I’m not mad about how beautiful it is here in Marin. After a moderately rainy winter, the sun has officially come out here and we’re starting to nest into our new humble abode. For the first time we have a backyard, with a grill! We truly relish in the idea that we can sit outside and eat dinner. I hope […] The post Mediterranean Orzo Salad with Feta appeared first on The Healthy Maven.
