I’ve Spent Hours Hunting Down the Best Sustainable Buys for Every Budget

May 06, 2020 at 07:00AM Sustainability is on the minds of everyone in fashion right now. For most of us, our consideration of where and how our clothes are made has only been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, the fashion industry was completely turned on its head. Last month, it was announced that London Fashion Week won’t be taking place in September with both men’s and women’s shows taking place digitally in June, which would usually be men’s fashion week. And just last week, Saint Laurent announced that it will no longer be taking part in the Paris Fashion Week schedule preferring to dictate its own show timetable. Without the carbon footprint of a physical fashion week, this move to a more sustainable fashion industry is one I hope will continue.  However, I have spent a lot of time researching and writing about sustainable fashion brands, and I know that while everyone wants to shop sustainably, the price can be a deterrent. For that reason, I’ve created a shopping list of pieces that includes more affordable items. I should point out that this means I’ve included a couple of pieces from conscious collections on the high street, too. This is because while I recognise that it’s vital we all start shopping less and buying smarter, not everyone can afford the super-high prices that often come with the sustainable fashion brands.   My highlights include a denim jacket from People Tree, vintage jewellery from London-based Susan Caplan (the necklace is only £25!), plus a tie-dye shirt

We’re Beauty Editors, and These Are the Products We Actually Buy

May 06, 2020 at 06:30AM As a beauty editor, I receive a lot of beauty products for free. It’s kind of part of the job. In order to keep up with the constantly growing market, it’s really important to have as much experience with a large variety of products as possible. While we beauty editors are by no means skin, makeup or hair experts, we are product experts. And that’s our job. In order to offer up the best advice on foundation, moisturiser or even hair dye, really we need to have tried the product out for ourselves. Because at the end of the day, if it’s a total flop, we’re not going to want to recommend it. It makes sense then that our beauty routines are rarely constant. Most days require trying something new and swapping one product out for another. And although it is great to get to experience so much, it makes it hard when you come across one product you really, really love. So although there’s no doubt that we have an abundance of new products at our finger tips, what we don’t have is a free product hotline that allows us to reorder products we really love without having to, you know, actually part with some money. And in a weird way, for a beauty editors to actually buy a product, I believe said editor has to love something more than a non–beauty editor might. Why buy a new serum when you have another five waiting on the shelf? Because

How To Cut Your Own Hair at Home According to a Hollywood Hair Stylist

May 06, 2020 at 06:30AM Before we get into this, we want to make one thing very clear: If you can avoid cutting your hair during this time, please do. It really doesn’t matter how many times you have seen your hairdresser do it, in normal circumstances, giving yourself an at-home haircut is never a good idea. However, the times we find ourselves in are far from normal circumstances, and while we by no means advocate at-home chops, we also understand that sometimes the split ends need to go. So, in order to make sure the damage inflicted to your precious strands through at-home cuts is kept to an absolute minimum, we have enlisted the help of one of the world’s top hair stylists to show how it’s done. Known for cutting the likes of Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and basically the entire of the Kardashian clan’s lengths as well as founding cult haircare brand Ouai, it’s safe to say Jen Atkin knows a thing or two about hair. So, when we found out that she had recently talked Bella Hadid through an at-home fringe cut over video chat and subsequently shared her at-home chop tutorial on her Instagram, we knew she was the girl for the job. To help compile the ultimate at-home haircut guide, we reached out to Atkin for all of her top tips. “There are a number of different risks with cutting your own hair like uneven ends, cutting too short or some kind of other nightmare. This is

The Classic Dress Style That Has Won Our Editors Over

May 06, 2020 at 06:24AM Love dresses? Then you’ve come to the right place. It seems there’s a new contender for best summer frock, and it’s not of the floral variety. According to Instagram—and the majority of team Who What Wear right now—the print set to knock flowery dresses off the top spot is polka dot. Whether they’re in black and white or more adventurous colours (see Kitri’s pink and white version below), it’s fair to say that we can’t stop thinking about them.  The best thing about this trend? It’s a style that’s not going to date, and play your cards right (i.e. pick a dress that makes you feel good and fits you well) and you’ll be wearing this hero piece for many years to come. Last year it was all about Zara’s spotted smock, a trending style that has well and truly set the polka dot tone for 2020. Brands have continued the long, languorous and loose theme, but this year they come with an accompanying puffed sleeve. At the top of my list is Kitri’s ’70s inspired belted number, which is sure to suit every body type and will bring a smile to your face (it’s literally the perfect shade of pink). Also, Ganni’s fabulous statement collar mini needs a mention—give it a few weeks and it’s sure to be all over Instagram. Scroll down to see and shop our full edit of polka dot dresses.  Who What Wear’s Hannah wearing a flamenco-style gown from De La Vali. Style Notes: A black polka dot midi is now

19 Products That Give Back—From T-Shirts to Holly Willoughby’s Knit

May 06, 2020 at 06:14AM In the midst of the COVID-19 global crisis, it is always heart-warming to see the people, brands and companies that step forward in an effort to help make a difference. Whether it be doctors coming out of retirement to support the NHS or friendly local neighbours helping to deliver groceries to those in need, the uplifting stories that emerge during these times help us all to retain perspective that there are still positive things happening in the world.  When it comes to fashion, several brands have also stepped up in an effort to do their bit, creating initiatives to donate profits to the NHS and other worthy causes. One such example is Chinti & Parker. The brand created a specific Hearts for the NHS range, which vows to donate 100% of profits to the Meals for the NHS charity. Holly Willoughby has already shown her support, posting a jumper from the collection to her Instagram.  While other brands including Rixo, Sandro and more have also created specific products whose sales will go to benefiting the NHS and other global charities. Some brands—including Valle & Vik and Palmer Harding—have taken an alternate route, instead pledging to donate a portion of any product sold on their website to charity.  There is absolutely no denying that times are tough right now, but seeing the way various brands are vowing to help has certainly made me feel a little brighter. Keep scrolling for 18 brands that are donating to charity in an effort to help this global pandemic.

Trust Me—This Little-Known High-Street Brand Is Worth a Browse

May 06, 2020 at 06:00AM Back in 2019 (or, as it feels in my mind, 100 lifetimes ago), I made a trip to John Lewis & Partners for one of my Joy of Shopping series. It’s a time-honoured favourite of the British high street—a sort of reliable aunt you can turn to for all your practical homeware and present-buying needs. Historically it has not, however, been considered the most cutting-edge or ‘cool’ place to shop, and so I was pleasantly surprised when I realised how outdated this preconception was—primarily thanks to Kin. One of John Lewis’ in-house labels, Kin shapes itself around clean-lined staples and simple silhouettes, and is sure to make the minimalists among us swoon with delight. While this is hardly a groundbreaking aesthetic on the high street (hi Arket and COS), with the fashion industry’s growing infatuation with all things stripped-back, this year Kin suddenly feels above and beyond many of the other affordable offerings with its ability to tap into this craving for timelessness and low-key cool.  So, what can you expect from Kin? With its roomy fits and androgynous nonchalance, it’s definitely not for those who prefer a more sculpted finish (although there are a few feb waist-tie dresses below.) It essentially offers up a read-made capsule: Think the perfect breton top, a pair of chunky sandals, wide leg trousers, white sneakers and utility shackets. You can just tell by looking at the collection that each item is able to be mix and matched with ease. Have I convinced you yet? Well, scroll down to see my full edit and witness the beauty for yourself.  Up Next: We Found All the

I Clean Out My Closet Twice a Month, But I Never Get Rid of These 8 Things

May 06, 2020 at 05:10AM I’ve always been big on cleaning out my closet and decluttering my space in general, but as we recently discussed, I’ve been on even more of a kick lately due to the extensive amount of time I’ve been spending at home. However, sharing some of the items we have purged from our wardrobes actually got me thinking about those pieces which I rarely, if ever, give the boot—and why. I didn’t notice it at first, but once I made a list, it became painfully clear that among the eight categories you’re about to read about below, there’s actually one common theme: They always come back (or never go out of style in the first place). That’s right. While items such as belts and eveningwear may seem more or less relevant over time, when you do need them, the versions you already own should typically do the trick. In other words, they’re less susceptible to the trend cycle and don’t need to be replaced as often, so rather than selling them and having to buy them again later, just keep the styles you own. To read about and shop all the categories that made the cut, just keep scrolling.  If the recent returns of Fendi’s baguette, Dior’s saddle, and Prada’s nylon shoulder bags taught us anything, it’s that holding on to a designer bag from five, 10 or even 15 years ago will save you a lot of money (and regret) when the brand reissues it, and it’s suddenly the

Justin and Hailey Bieber Are Shooting a Reality Show in Quarantine

May 05, 2020 at 09:53PM Last month, we got a peek inside Drake’s Toronto mansion and now, we’re getting an inside look at Justin and Hailey Bieber’s Canadian home, where they’ve elected to spend their time in quarantine, via a self-filmed reality show. Titled The Biebers on Watch, the series features the couple at their home in Puslinch Lake, Ont., and is streaming exclusively on Facebook Watch. Offering fans an intimate look at their lives in quarantine, the 12-episode show is being filmed by the couple on GoPro cameras, with the first episode dropping on Facebook yesterday. “We wanted to bring you into our journey a little bit and show you some inside scoops of what we’ve been doing,” says Justin in the opening episode. The two decide to take a boat ride out on the lake by their home, which brings up childhood memories for Justin of fishing with his grandfather. “Would you say that this is one of the most peaceful places that you’ve been?” he asks Hailey, who nods and refers to it as their “sanctuary.” While out on the boat, they discuss some personal topics, like the “most rewarding thing about being married,” how to deal with heartbreak, and the importance of forgiveness. Future episodes, according to the series synopsis, will feature “intimate conversations and activities with famous friends and family.” New episodes of Justin and Hailey’s reality show are scheduled to drop on Facebook Watch every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the next three weeks.
