Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Maria Qamar aka Hatecopy

May 01, 2020 at 03:50PM As people around the country wind down their seventh week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. Maria Qamar, artist The “pandemic panic” set in a few weeks into our national isolation when I lost one of my heroes in the same week that celebrities began to get strangely tone-deaf on social media. I decided it was time to log off. Best decision ever. Even before the virus, I would spend months in front of my monitor or my canvas tinkering away at things that may or may not make it out of the studio, with no co-workers, no boss and no one to shake me awake when my ten-minute mid-day nap turned into four hours. My friends and family live out of town, so I was typically never motivated to leave my apartment. Once I had completed a large project during the isolation period, I would take a deep breath and finally step outside. Often, I would travel to the other side of the world to get away from the feeling of work for a few months. Then I’d come right back to the studio and isolate again. This has been my cycle for the past half decade. View this

Why Does My Baby’s Head Look Misshapen?

May 01, 2020 at 03:04PM You may not have realized this until you were in the delivery room, but a lot of babies aren’t born with a round head. This happens because newborns’ heads are made out of soft, flexible bones with spaces between them. During birth, these bones are able to squeeze together to change the shape of your […] The post Why Does My Baby’s Head Look Misshapen? appeared first on SafeandHealthylife. Knix Launches New Swimwear Campaign Featuring 25 of its Customers

May 01, 2020 at 02:00PM Knix had big plans for its 2020 swimwear campaign – namely, flying three influencers (TheBirdsPapaya, Jillian Harris and Sasha Exeter) and one lucky customer to Tulum, Mexico to shoot the images. And then, the global COVID-19 pandemic hit and the brand, like so many others, had to change course. And the results are nothing short of stunning. Off the back of its call-out, Knix says it received 11,000 applications from customers across North America hoping to be in the shoot. So, instead of choosing just one, the brand ended up picking 25 customers to shoot themselves in the new season pieces. Armed with a swimsuit and a few photography tips, the women were tasked with creating their own shot. Speaking of the selection process, Knix’s associate creative director Nicole Stafford told FASHION, “Our top priority when doing any casting call is always diversity, representing real bodies is engrained in our brand ethos and is something we are proud of.” She added that location was another factor – “We were really hoping to get some sunny outdoor shots!” – and that the final cast was a mix of women from Canada and the US. “We encouraged them to have fun in their swimsuit, to experiment with different backdrops, poses and expressions and to try using props. Most importantly, we wanted this group of women to feel confident and like themselves,” she adds of the creative process. The images (some of which you can see in the

7 Stretches To Keep Your Body Happy + Pain-Free While WFH

May 01, 2020 at 11:34AM Stretching is like drinking water. No one needs to tell us that it’s good for us — it’s just so gosh darn boring that sometimes we forget! That said, while working from home and managing a home-centric schedule, we’ve learned that the little things add up. Small, healthy habits shape our mood and sense of well-being from hour to hour. Below is a stretching routine designed by a biomechanics sports therapist for those of us working from home. The series of gentle exercises is designed to combat the negative side effects of increased sitting and screen time: – necks straining to lean towards screens – backs losing their natural curve due to sitting posture – tight chest muscles from arm keyboard positions – shortened hip flexors from legs being bent for a prolonged time The routine caught our attention for a strange reason: the first stretch is incredibly simple — and incredibly unflattering. We may not have the guts to use this therapy in a more social office environment, so we’re taking advantage of our private office digs to get that double chin-inducing, yet super-satisfying stretch in. We were introduced to therapist, Brian Hoke through Vionic, the makers of orthotic support shoes like these, that don’t look like anything our grandmothers might wear. A Stretching Routine for WFH Hoke suggests doing the below stretches once for every three hours of sitting, holding the correct position for 15 seconds and repeating each stretch 3-5 times For the

13 Ways To Looks Pretty At Home Without Being Too Extra

May 01, 2020 at 11:00AM If you’re swimming in extra time at home (*insert sound of young moms everywhere laughing*), there has never been a better time to try out strange beauty experiments and YouTube tutorials. In fact, if you’re getting less sun exposure than usual, it could be the perfect time to break out a chemical peel treatment that would normally require sunscreen afterward (Drunk Elephant’s Baby Facial is a top pick!) If you’re hanging out at home and have forgotten what it feels like to gloss things up a bit, try breaking out a few simple beauty tricks to lift your mood. Do it for yourself. Do it for your cat. Or do it for your family who — at some point this month — has peacefully accepted your descent into some form of non-showering couch troll. Step One: Take a shower. (And if you still haven’t learned to dry brush first, learn how to here.) Step Two: Try a face mask. This doesn’t need to be a morning long ordeal. Our favorite lately is packed with caffeine and provides a profound anti-inflammatory effect in just ten minutes. Keep the gel mask in the fridge for the most refreshing mini-facial ever. Step Three: Rinse off, oil up and get our your gua sha stone. When we swear our love for a gua sha routine, we’re not joking around. This self-massage routine will calm and soothe you while waking up the circulation in your face and neck in something

I Spent an Hour With VB’s Brow Expert—Here’s Everything I Learned

May 01, 2020 at 11:05AM When it comes to eyebrows, there’s one woman in the beauty industry who has become synonymous with perfect arches: Anastasia Soare. She’s the lady who started our worldwide obsession with brows. Yes, before Soare launched her eponymous brand Anastasia Beverly Hills with a flagship L.A. salon back in 1997—and a range of brow products in 2000—nobody gave two hoots about using makeup to shape their brows. (Trust me—photos of my sparse, over-plucked eyebrows in the early ’00s are proof enough.) Since then, Anastasia Beverly Hills has gone on to become the #1 brow brand worldwide, with a range of cult products to boot. Oh, and Soare is the only lady Victoria Beckham allows to touch her eyebrows. Praise indeed. So to say that I jumped at the chance to spend some one-on-one time with Soare would be an understatement… After the PR for Anastasia Beverly Hills gave me the heads-up earlier this year that Soare would be coming to the UK, I took the bold decision to stop shaping my eyebrows entirely. (As someone with seriously unruly brow hairs, this was a big step.) Luckily, though, this meant I was able to get some genuine brow advice when I did catch up with Anastasia. Plus, I asked Who What Wear readers for any burning brow questions in our Facebook group (So… Should I Buy This?), which Soare was only too happy to answer. Keep scrolling for the five things I learned from VB’s brow expert,

This Cult Brand Just Created the Prettiest Dresses On the High Street

May 01, 2020 at 10:00AM There are dresses and then there are Mother of Pearl dresses. The sustainable British label was created by Amy Powney and has been a hit amongst the fashion crowd for good reason—the dresses are often flowing, romantic pieces that are as classic as they are contemporary. They fit into any wardrobe and are the ideal keep-forever items. The brand’s spring/summer 2020 season favours colours such as black, white, blues and muted pinks for its tops, bottoms and frocks and a couple of checked jackets that will see you right through until September. There are of course polka dots and plenty of pieces embellished the with its signature pearls too. While we’re of course all for investing in those really great designer pieces, there’s no escaping the fact that luxury fashion, and often sustainable fashion, is expensive. So, boy, do we have some great news for you today. John Lewis & Partners has teamed up with Mother of Pearl to create a capsule collection featuring gorgeous dresses and blouses, a chic beige suit, as well as some great shirts and trousers. The most popular piece so far has to be the polka dot dress that clearly bears the brand’s classic style. And if you want to see how it looks, some of our favourite influencers have been styling it in different ways. Keep scrolling for all of those outfit ideas and then shop our edit of the collection. Style Notes: Zeena Shah teams her black and white dress with chunky

May Journal Prompts for Growth

May 01, 2020 at 10:00AM Happy May! I know it can feel hard to look ahead or dream right now… and that’s exactly why this month’s journal prompts are going to focus on that. To get through hard seasons of life, I always like to manifest a brighter, better future. As you may know, I recently started a garden. I can’t help but think of all the applicable metaphors for this time of life. “You reap what you sow.” “What you focus on grows.” It’s been so rewarding to see the tiny little seeds I planted become full on plants with a little water, love and attention. I’m taking this slower season of life to plant the seeds (literally and figuratively!) for the future. Who’s in? 10 Journal Prompts for Growth 1. What rhythms in your life will you be shifting moving forward? 2. What has become more important to me this past month and what has become less? 3. What from this season of life do you want to bring with you and what do you want to leave behind? 4. No matter what the future looks like, what is the one thing you are most looking forward to this year? 5. What can […] The post May Journal Prompts for Growth appeared first on The Healthy Maven.
