This Is the Ideal Throw-On Dress for Summer 2020

May 01, 2020 at 07:00AM I love my life being made easier. I mean, who doesn’t? And right now with everything going on, there are a couple of things that make me feel like I’m a bit more in control: i) having a tidy desk and ii) getting dressed in actual clothes but it not taking too much effort. This is the perfect segue then to talking about one of the greatest dresses of all time: the T-shirt dress. It is the simplest of creations. It can be short, midi or long. It can have a cute detail or be printed. But it must have short sleeves and a classic T-shirt neckline (usually crew, I will accept V). The real joy I take in this frock variety is that it can be as loose or as tight as you want–there are no hard and fast rules about how it should be worn. My personal preference is to wear it at a midi length in a black or bold block colour and paired with gold earrings or a chain necklace with chunky sandals. I’ve recently spotted a gorgeous fringed one from Raey, which I know I’d get tons of wear out over the summer. But there are loads more around right now so don’t just take my word for it and keep scrolling to see my edit of the best T-shirt dresses… Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends you need to know. The One Product Dermatologists Wish Everyone Would Start Using

May 01, 2020 at 06:30AM I’ve always been into my skincare. (Ask any girl with hormonal acne and I’m sure she’ll tell you the same). The desire to find that one wonder product started in my teenage years, where I’d spend hours lusting over the just-launched cleansers and shiny posts of moisturisers in the monthly glossies, while most weekends involved poring over the shelves in Boots deciding how to spend the £30 I’d earned from my Saturday job. (Which, for the record, actually happened to be in Boots.) Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to try some of the best skincare products on the market and have created a routine that works for my skin and its needs. But I’m ashamed to say that my routine was distinctly lacking in one skincare product until about a year ago: SPF. Through creating content with celebrity facialists and chatting to dermatologists about the best ways to care for your complexion, I discovered that skin experts unanimously agreed that SPF was an integral part of any successful skincare routine. Yet so many of us—myself included—choose to ignore it. Personally, I think there are two main reasons for our hesitance around using a daily SPF: Firstly, the UK isn’t exactly renowned for its amazing weather (especially during the winter months when you might not have seen the sun for weeks). It isn’t normally until a heat wave rears its head on the weather forecast that we feel any kind of desire to start slapping on the sun protection on a

The Complete Capsule: 9 Summer Essentials to Carry You Through Till Autumn

May 01, 2020 at 06:08AM Is it too early to start thinking about our summer wardrobes? Personally, I think not. Considering we’ll all be spending much of spring indoors, our summer wardrobes seem to potentially represent a light at the end of the tunnel right now. So what will we be wearing once summer comes along? For us, whether we’re inside or outside, it will be a capsule consisting of versatile, wear-with-everything staples. From polo tops and patterned skirts to floral dresses and chunky sandals, this summer we’ll not only be investing in items that can easily be mixed-and-matched but also items that will remain on high rotation in our closets for seasons to come. Puff-sleeve tops, which have been popular throughout winter, will continue their reign in our wardrobes, though summer iterations will feature crisp white cotton and even statement collars. Meanwhile, minimalist ’90s style dresses have made a comeback, complete with A-line silhouettes, square necklines and thin straps. As far as footwear is concerned, influencers are already proving the thong sandal is here to stay, while on the comfier side, chunky flats will become our dependable daily option. Keep scrolling for the nine key items that are set to make up our capsule wardrobe this summer. The 4 Outfits Carrie Bradshaw Would Wear If She Were Working From Home in 2020

May 01, 2020 at 06:00AM She spent many a morning tapping away at her laptop; pontificating on the meaning of love, men, and Manolo Blahniks; mooching ’round her flat in boxer shorts; cradling a cup of coffee; and gazing blankly out the window. Yes, I have no doubt that Carrie Bradshaw would be well-versed in the art of working from home if she lived in modern-day Manhattan. We might’ve left her immortalised in 2004, but it doesn’t take much to picture her in 2020, iPhone in hand, navigating the politics of online dating during lockdown, all the while updating her Instagram feed with arty mirror selfies and desperately tweeting Il Cantinori about its takeout service. (She hasn’t used her oven in 25 years.)  Of course, we all know that in reality, a freelance writer with a designer shoe habit could never afford to live on the Upper East Side, but this is magical TV land, and we’ll take all the escapism we can get right now. So in the spirit of things, we couldn’t help but wonder what CB would wear at home had the series run today. We decided to fabricate four imaginary working-from-home looks that we would’ve loved to see Ms. Bradshaw in and included plenty of references to some of her most iconic getups but updated them for 2020. From clogs (who else would dare to attempt this trend?) and fluffy mules to blinged-up cardis and menswear shirts, scroll down to see the outfits Carrie would wear during lockdown.  Style Notes: Carrie loved a good sultry slip, and I can totally imagine her lounging on Aidan’s chair, phone in hand, cocooned

How New Canadian Brand 19/99 Beauty is Changing the Conversation Around Age

April 30, 2020 at 10:30PM Launching a new beauty brand in the midst of a global health pandemic might sound incredibly stressful, but for Camille Katona and Stephanie Spence, the timing allowed them to reiterate the messaging behind their new brand, 19/99 Beauty. “The pandemic hit when we were about six weeks out from launch,” they tell FASHION via email. “We, along with so many others, were and are grasping for ways to adjust to our new world and 19/99 will have, more than ever, a focus on building community and conversations. While what is happening in the world is devastating, we are also seeing a shift in what we as a society truly value. As a new beauty brand, our hope is to be able to use this time to rethink what beauty is all about.” Photograph courtesy of 19/99 Beauty In a release, the Toronto-based pair (who have both worked in the industry for more than 10 years) describe the brand as making “high-performance, multi-purpose products designed for those who want to define their own beauty and don’t give a sh*t about what is considered appropriate.” The line launched with just two products – the Precision Colour Pencil ($26) and High-Shine Gloss ($24) – which the pair says was a deliberate move to help combat the excess waste already hyper-present in the industry. “We wanted to challenge ourselves to create a limited number of products that are universal; that work for anyone regardless of age, skin tone, aesthetic

Nike Socks, Bras and Shorts Have Quickly Become Sought-After Fashion Items

April 30, 2020 at 09:00PM Four times a year Lyst, the global fashion search engine, releases a list of the most popular brands and items on the planet, and its Q1 report has been significantly impacted by our shift in lifestyles. Nike has gone from the 12th most powerful brand, to take the number three spot and a pair of joggers were the 8th hottest women’s product. It’s not surprising given the surge in demand for loungewear, however Nike and New Balance are two sportswear brands that are really resonating within fashionable circles.  People aren’t going for the simple Nike items either, as the consensus seems to be ‘the bigger the swoosh, the better.’ Instagram and TikTok are awash with crop tops with exaggerated Nike ticks and many are wearing white tennis socks pulled up to reveal the logo. As we are moving into summer, many are swapping jogging bottoms for track shorts, so it’s likely the Nike sweatshorts will make their way into Lyst’s top 10 for Q2.  Keep scrolling to see the Nike items we love—and some ideas for how to wear them.  Style Notes: Buttercup yellow tracksuits have been a real hit in fashion circles, and this Nike one is a beauty. Style Notes: Contrast a Nike crop top with an exaggerated swoosh with a tailored blazer.Style Notes: New Balance + Nike socks are a popular double act in 2020. We told you… here they are again. And again…Opt for an all-white look, with joggers, a T-shirt and Nike socks. Most of us aren’t

Canadian Spoken-Word Artist Mustafa the Poet to Star in New Valentino Campaign

April 30, 2020 at 09:05PM As the world continues to feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, fashion houses are having to shift the way they do things, particularly when it comes to campaigns. Last week, Bella Hadid starred in the first major luxury campaign to be shot over FaceTime for Jacquemus, and now, Valentino has revealed its plans for its Fall advertising campaign. According to WWD, creative director Pierpaolo Picciolo has tapped his network of high profile friends to appear in the brand’s upcoming men’s and women’s campaigns for Fall. So far, the list includes the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Anwar Hadid and Laura Dern. Each of the stars has agreed to waive their fees for the project, with the house donating one million euros to the Lazzaro Spallanzani Hospital in Rome to help with its COVID-19 relief efforts. Each star will be shot in their own home (by someone they’re living with), wearing clothes from Valentino’s upcoming collection. Excitingly, Canadian spoken word artist Mustafa the Poet (whose real name is Mustafa Ahmed) has also been tapped for the opportunity. This won’t be the first time the Canadian has worked with the Italian brand, either. For its F/W 20 campaign, Valentino asked Ahmed to create a series of poems to appear on pieces in the Valentino On Love collection. Plus, in February, Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy wore a custom Valentino tux to the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty that was adorned with the words of one of his

Does Street Style Have a Future in a Post-COVID-19 World?

April 30, 2020 at 08:42PM After the announcement this month that London Fashion Week will launch a digital platform, a small slice of direction was given to an industry that’s been in a downward spiral for the better part of a decade. It offers hope that for creatives, there is prosperity beyond the runway calendar; and it also presents an opportunity for everyone involved to rethink, reimagine and start fresh in approaching the design, production, retail and editorial lifecycles of the pieces that allow us to express our inner character to the world. But one thing sprang to mind after hearing the LFW news and other announcements about catwalk cancellations: What would happen to street style? It’s a medium that’s become a powerful means for press to illustrate trends, and for brands to flaunt their latest wares. It’s launched influencers into business moguls and created icons out of editors—and now it’s facing a disappearing act in the wake of social distancing, a deepening examination of how the fashion industry functions, and for the individual, what’s necessary and what’s not. Labels have turned to telling stories about their products through social platforms because customers crave authenticity in what they consume, be it visually or through a purchase. And to save itself, street style must likewise pivot back to its original incarnation and intention, documenting what people wear—and how they wear it—in an uninhibited way, sans the intervention of the entities that capitalized on its popularity.
