April 28, 2020 at 06:00AM It was only a few weeks ago, when I was singing the praises of a certain £6 product that had converted me to eye creams, that I took the time to actually take a proper look at my bathroom beauty stash and realised just how many other products from the same brand had a permanent home in my skincare rotation. As I’ve mentioned previously, The Ordinary is an affordable beauty brand offering up high-performance formulations with ingredients at their core. Ask any beauty junkie or skincare fanatic about them and chances are they’ll have a couple of products in their bathroom cabinets. Admittedly, if you aren’t already clued about the ingredients you should be putting on your face, The Ordinary can feel a little overwhelming at first. But with a little research into your skin concerns and needs, it’s a great affordable beauty brand to get on board with. For reference, my skin is combination, prone to regular hormonal breakouts, has dehydrated patches around my nose and chin, and is starting to show those early signs of ageing in the form of some very small (but definitely present) fine lines around my eyes—and The Ordinary offers up products that suit all of my very specific skin needs. Keep scrolling to shop my favourite products from The Ordinary, along with advice on what skin concerns they’ll solve and how to use them. Who should use it: People with oily skin who are prone to breakouts. If I could only

20 & Other Stories Pieces That Are Making Me Smile
April 28, 2020 at 06:00AM On days when I feel a little out of sorts, I tend to lean on the same styling trick to make me look and feel a little brighter. You guessed it: wearing bright colours. On days when I have a headache, a hangover or am feeling a little emotional, I’ll head for the most colourful items I own. So it won’t surprise you to hear that I’ve spent most of March and April dressing like a rainbow and wearing more vibrant colours than Queen Elizabeth II on a royal tour. And I’m not alone here. This month, many participated in the #instarainbowchallenge, in which people wore jolly, vibrant outfits for a week. In my opinion, the one high-street store that does colour better than anywhere else is & Other Stories, as you’d currently struggle to find much beige and black on there. There’s a clear colour palette it is working with for spring, with many of the designs incorporating powdery pinks, acid greens, lemons and soft, icy blues. The items that I love the most include a linen pink midi dress with a smocked detail at the waist and a peppermint smocked crop top. What can I say? I love the smock. I am also drawn to the pastel linen tailoring, particularly the sage green linen shorts and the baby-pink blazer. Keep scrolling to see all the colourful pieces I’m loving on & Other Stories right now. Next up, see our guide to the key trends for spring and summer 2020. This Is How the Coolest Minimalists Are Dressing Now
April 28, 2020 at 04:08AM More than ever, the fashion industry has become one defined by binaries. On the one hand, you have the “throw everything at it” maximalists, many of whom only exist on our Instagram feeds and immortalised on the pavements of fashion week—an aesthetic spearheaded by the likes of Alessandro Michele at Gucci and Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga. On the other hand, you have those who are rejecting the noise and clamour of clashing prints and accessory overload and instead embracing a more contemplative approach. Yes, it is minimalism, but not as you know it. Minimalism is an aesthetic that has simmered beneath the surface for decades, occasionally bubbling-up and making its presence felt, but never really disappearing entirely. From Coco Chanel’s sporty separates and Calvin Klein’s ‘90s greyscale to Phoebe Philo’s austere, post-financial crash stylings at Celine, it’s one of the few fashion movements that has transcended multiple generations. Bottega Veneta runway spring/summer 2020. Over the last few seasons, it has become clear that minimalism is having another moment in the spotlight. And more than ever, shoppers want pieces that last—not just for budget reasons but for ethical and sustainable fashion purposes too. Two fashion houses have spearheaded this new minimalism—The Row and Bottega Veneta. And both brands have given us a new appreciation of minimalism for 2020. “Approaching each season, we look to our six muses; the fashion pioneer, the warrior, the free spirit, the curator, the romantic and the purist,” explains Natalie Kingham, buying director at MatchesFashion. “The Purist opts for minimalist style with a
35 Iconic 1980s Fashion Moments We Never Want to Forget
April 28, 2020 at 02:22AM When it comes to ’80s fashion, we have a (surprising) amount to be thankful for. While the decade previously hadn’t influenced our wardrobes for a long time, in recent years, we’ve come to the realisation that all the most current trends today are courtesy of the ’80s. Now, if you’re not too familiar with the nuances of this era, there are a few standout looks we’re sure you’ll recognise: big shoulders, white jeans, underwear as outerwear and oversized jewellery. It was the decade of the power dresser but also of punks. It gave us Madonna, Tina Turner and Cher, plus numerous other superstars whose sense of style influences many right now. Don’t believe us? From the fact that Princess Diana’s archive is inspiring some of the world’s most influential designers to the more basic resurgence in women wearing blazers with jeans again, we’ve found 35 A-list images that prove these ’80s fashion looks are as current now as they were then. Keep scrolling to click through our gallery of iconic ’80s outfits. Style Notes: This is classic ’80s Madonna, but the underwear/bodysuit look is bang on the money for now. You can forgo the pearls—just wear yours with some high-waisted jeans for a night out. Style Notes: As if we needed any more proof that Cher is the ultimate style queen, here was the star doing the naked dress before everyone was doing it at the Met Gala (and every other award show going). Style Notes: Brooke Shields was America’s number

In The Kitchen With Farmer, Chef + Cookbook Author Abra Berens
April 27, 2020 at 10:00AM Feels like spring. We’re sharing this ultra-inspiring story from April of last year! As city girls, we’re constantly fantasizing about a rustic life where we can grow our own food and eat with the seasons. According to our latest poll, most of our readers are dreaming about the same. Chef Abra Berens is living that life, hosting unique dinners on the idyllic Granor Farm in Michigan and we love how she’s managed to balance her passion for farming with a talent for high-quality culinary art. Abra’s ethos is simple: the meals we eat should change with the seasons and their ingredients should come from the freshest sources nearby. The talented chef and former farmer recently published her debut cookbook Ruffage: A Practical Guide To Vegetables which has us majorly hungry and inspired. Here’s what is inside the new author’s fridge… The post In The Kitchen With Farmer, Chef + Cookbook Author Abra Berens appeared first on The Chalkboard. Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior Among Luxury Brands Rallying for COVID-19 Fundraiser
April 27, 2020 at 08:29PM As we settle into week seven of social distancing, our eyes are glued to the news for any hint of when this pandemic may come to and end. With no definitive end in sight for us as yet here in Canada (and much of the rest of the world), brands are increasingly rallying to help support frontline healthcare workers in any way possible. Locally, a group of 20 Toronto-based designers came together to help raise money for the University Health Network this past weekend, and on a global scale, several of the world’s biggest luxury brands are now rallying for what is shaping up to be one of the most memorable auctions in fashion’s history. Run by La Mode S’Engage, the auction will support non-profit organization #ProtegeTonSoignant, which means protect your caregiver, as it sources and distributes supplies to healthcare workers in France. The auction has already drawn more than 80 brands – including Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Celine and Comme des Garçons. According to Business of Fashion, “each designer will be tasked with either customizing an item from their archive or designing a new garment from scratch for the auction.” The only thing that each design must include is the signature electric blue colour of #ProtegeTonSoignant. For those designers who don’t have access to their archives/materials at home, sketches of the garment will be accepted or they can opt to offer a made-to-order piece through the auction instead. All proceeds from the auction

ICYMI: These Were the Highlights From the Stronger Together Concert
April 27, 2020 at 05:47PM The largest single-show broadcast in Canadian history, Stronger Together, Tous Ensemble brought together the biggest names in the country, from actors and athletes to musicians, authors, activists and more. The special event honouring healthcare workers and raising money for Food Banks Canada featured musical performances, messages of hope and solidarity, and also told the stories of frontline workers and COVID-19 survivors. Canadian rocker Sam Roberts kicked off the show with an uplifting acoustic rendition of his 2014 single “We’re All In This Together,” with his three children accompanying him on music. Celine Dion addressed viewers in French and English, praising the “heroes out there around the world who are going to work every single day.” Other celebrities who made an appearance include author Margaret Atwood; dance troupe Cirque du Soleil’s Kevin, Andi and Gasya Atherton; actors Mike Myers, Will Arnett (with a special appearance by Amy Poehler) and Kiefer Sutherland; and the entire cast of Schitt’s Creek. The goal of Stronger Together, Tous Ensemble was to raise money for Food Banks Canada’s $150 million campaign to provide immediate support to food banks across the nation during the pandemic, and over the course of the 90-minute event, so many Canadians sent in donations that they broke the internet. “Canada, you’re amazing,” organizers of the event tweeted. “The @foodbankscanada website has crashed under the weight of your generosity.” For those who still wish to donate, there’s plenty of time.
