April 21, 2020 at 11:12AM MatchesFashion just launched its midseason sale, with 30% off many of our most-loved brands such as Shrimps, Ganni and Self-Portrait. It currently has 3947 items listed under this offer, which translates into hours of pressing “Next Page” if you wanted to look through it all. We have combed through all of the shoes, dresses, accessories and more to bring you a concise edit of the best offers we saw. Our main shopping advice is always to buy things that will fit within your own wardrobe, love for years (it’s best to avoid fads) and will actually wear. Simple, we know, but this advice is more important when shopping in the sales. Instead of focusing on the reductions and what a great deal something is, it’s more important to consider whether this is something that is actually missing from your wardrobe. In the sale, we’ve found lots of classic items that will act as building blocks in your wardrobe, such as Emma Willis shirts and Alighieri necklaces. With weddings and holidays on-hold, there’s notably more formal dresses and new-in bikinis in the sale than usual for this time of year. Many people in the industry use the sales primarily to buy things for the next year, rather than shopping for the season we’re in. Highlights include a Self-Portrait powder-blue midi dress, Shrimps’ cult pearl hair clips and straw hats from the new brand Avenue the Label. To receive the discount, just enter code MID30 at checkout. Next up,

Toronto Swimwear Brand Ūnika Swim Repurposes Adidas Inventory to Make Mask Covers
April 24, 2020 at 10:21PM Since the middle of March, Toronto-based swimwear brand Ūnika Swim has been navigating uncharted waters (much like everyone else). “Due to the fact that we cut, sew, and produce all of our pieces by hand in the studio, we had no other option but to shut down,” says founder Betsy Campos of the brand’s decision following the COVID-19 pandemic. She notes that the health and safety of her team and clients was top priority. But soon after, Campos felt a sense of guilt. “Here I was, the founder of a company with a full production facility, sleeping at night knowing that there was demand for PPE,” she says. “As the daughter of someone working on the front lines, it really hit home and I knew I had to do something.” Fast forward about a month, and Campos is now working alongside adidas Canada to make a positive impact in their shared community. And it happened rather naturally. Being at the helm of a sustainable, inclusive and eco-friendly brand, Campos wanted to take the best approach to minimizing waste while producing masks for those in need. As swimwear makers, their deadstock doesn’t include cotton, so she had to think external. Campos then pitched the idea to adidas Canada to recycle and repurpose their athletic wear inventory. “Adidas is good at organically knitting themselves into different communities by highlighting leaders that are making changes in diverse circles and neighborhoods, so they agreed to donate the material,” Campos
Jennifer Lopez’s Bralette and Shorts Outfit Proves Cut-Offs Have Been Replaced
April 24, 2020 at 09:37PM Anyone else miss Jennifer Lopez’s epic street style moments right about now? You know we do. But until red carpets and street style are a thing again, we have Instagram and the occasional walk around the neighborhood as our opportunities to see what celebrities are wearing. Lopez is currently with her family in Miami, and went outside momentarily wearing shorts. Her timing is perfect, as it’s quickly becoming too warm for a wardrobe of just sweatpants and leggings, so let’s talk about shorts. As you know, pleated pants and jeans were deemed somewhat controversial up until recently, but everyone started wearing them last year, including J.Lo. So it’s only natural that she’d wear the shorts version of the trend now that it’s a balmy 88 degrees in Miami (and other parts of the country). It’s another signal that denim cut-offs continue to fall by the wayside as Bermuda shorts, sweat shorts, and yes, pleated shorts rise. You could just wear a T-shirt with your pleated shorts, but wouldn’t you go with a lace bralette if you were J.Lo?… She finished the look off with white sneakers and a sweatshirt draped over her shoulders. Check it out for yourself and shop our favorite pleated shorts below. On Jennifer Lopez: Night Night by Jonathan Simkhai bralette; Valentino White High-Waisted Shorts ($1100); Alexander McQueen Sneakers ($490); Quay Jezabell 57mm Round Sunglasses ($65) An excellent use of stripes. 9 Comfortable Bras (By Canadian Designers) You’ll Actually Want to Wear at Home
April 24, 2020 at 09:24PM If you’re someone who rips off their bra the second you get home, we can totally relate. Comfortable bras may seem like an oxymoron but while being bra-free feels like a relief, it’s not for everyone. Trading a wired bra for subtle support can be the perfect middle ground especially when spending more time at home. Look for fit (it shouldn’t leave marks on your skin) and soft breathable fabric to set the right foundation for your WFH wardrobe. Try a wireless t-shirt bra or a delicate bralette that makes you feel fancy regardless of what you wear over it. Whether you’re team sweats or jeans for your WFH wardrobe, here are our favourite comfortable bras made by Canadian brands: <div class="sjm-attachment-carousel–header gallery-container–default" data-slick='{"speed":400,"adaptiveHeight":true,"variableWidth":false,"centerMode":true,"centerPadding":"0","slidesToShow":1,"lazyLoad":"ondemand","prevArrow":"Previous”,”nextArrow”:”Next”}’ data-simplemodal=’false’ > 1/9 Thistle Bralette ($56, Thief and Bandit) Made from 100% organic cotton in downtown Halifax, this fresh printed bra will feel freeing with just enough support to keep things in place. Buy Now 2/9 Romie Bra ($84, Bully Boy Lingerie) A soft mesh bralette could be the pop of colour you need to brighten your mood. The light and breathable fabric feels barely there. Buy Now 3/9 Fine Form Bra ($78, Lulu Lemon) Sports bras get a bad rap for flattening or creating a uniboob. This smooth and supportive style will keep your shape thanks to its soft malleable cups. It also offers adjustable straps so you have the option of wearing it racerback. Buy Now 4/9 Carter Bra
My Current Favorite Dresses Are All Under $50, But You’d Never Know It
April 24, 2020 at 07:11PM Ask anyone who sees me on a regular basis, and they’ll tell you I almost exclusively wear dresses when the weather allows it. The honest reason is that they’re the easiest item to throw on while still looking put-together. I also find dresses to be one of the most comfortable options when the weather takes a turn for the hot and sticky, especially in comparison to my other go-to: denim. Not that you necessarily needed further convincing, but I’m definitely not the only one on the daily dress-wearing train. Besides loungewear, I almost exclusively scroll through dress outfits on my Instagram feed. Currently, I’ve got my eyes on Niké Ojekunle, a Nigerian-born and L.A.-based fashion and skincare blogger who tells me her polished style is loosely inspired by Old Hollywood. She also tells me that some of my recent favorite looks from her feed are shoppable at Walmart, which means they’re surprisingly affordable, not that you’d ever be able to tell. Shop her two favorite current looks below (including some excellent sandals), as well as seven more under-$50 dress picks. Ojekunle and I are on the same page when it comes to warm weather style. “I love wearing dresses year round but especially during spring and summer because it allows for easy breeziness,” she tells me. Laugh at the cliché if you must, but it’s so true. I never spend more than 15 minutes on my dress outfits, and I always get the most compliments on them. Her first choice is a short-sleeve eyelet option that has a
Should You Still Be Wearing SPF Now That You’re at Home?
April 24, 2020 at 07:45PM With stay at home restrictions in place for at least another month in Canada, we continue to adapt to our new ‘normal’ and the challenges and questions it brings with it. Since all non-essential businesses have been temporarily shuttered to help stem the spread of the pandemic, we’ve been forced to take many a beauty matter into our hands: from caring for and colouring our hair, to removing gel manicures and acing the application of press-on nails, taming our brows and having virtual beauty consultations to answer our seemingly endless array of questions. One of the most common questions we’ve been hearing from friends and colleagues is whether or not there’s a need for wearing SPF now that we’re at home most (/all) of the time. We all know SPF is a non-negotiable in a daily routine that involves being outdoors. But what happens when we’re only moving from our bedrooms to our work spaces in a day? In short, you still need to wear your SPF like you would have before social distancing measures began, says Holly Thaggard, the founder of cult suncare brand Supergoop. “UVA rays are present throughout the year at the same intensity, even when we experience cloudy, springtime weather, and the damage they cause is not always immediately visible,” says Thaggard, adding that SPF application is particularly important for those “working near a window or somewhere in your [space] with natural light.” She adds, “UVA ray damage accelerates most of

These Simple Nail Polish Shades Go With Absolutely Everything
April 24, 2020 at 06:12PM Settling on the perfect nail polish colour can be tricky business. With what feels like millions of different shades to choose from, no beauty product has the ability to generate a spiral of indecisiveness quite like nail varnish. Therefore, finding your go-to, signature nail shade can make all of the difference and help to eliminate any confusion. So what exactly makes a great signature polish? Well, to start with, it’s something that goes with just about any outfit. It’s also low maintenance and long-lasting. If you’re in a bit of a nail varnish rut and fancy experimenting with some new formulas and shades, keep scrolling for the perfect staple nail polishes—whatever your taste. Red is just about the most classic nail polish shade out there. It’s absolutely timeless. While we totally understand that the boldness of a bright red isn’t for everyone, the new take on classic red polish is bright and poppy as opposed to flat and vampy. Glossy, red nails have never looked so cool. Probably one of the more fashionable shades on the list, brown nails are having a real moment. While warm, chocolatey shades look great with added shine, we also love cooler, lighter tones with a matte finish. We think brown is a real rising star in the nail polish world. When we first learned of the rumour that the Royals (including the Queen of England herself) regard Essie’s Ballet Slippers as their go-to nail varnish shade, we thought it’s
10 Spring / Summer Fashion Trends to Look Out For
April 24, 2020 at 06:00PM You might be in your PJs reading this, but staying at home really shouldn’t stop you from looking good (even if it’s only for a Zoom chat) or prepping for when you can finally go out in proper clothes and makeup! Take a cue from these spring/summer fashion trends as you revamp your wardrobe for the new season! Mouseover and click on the images for more details! Image: chuu 1. Color – Neon What’s more summery than vibrant and outrageous neon colors? If you’ve watched Selena Gomez’s Spring Breakers (2012), that’s the vibe I’m talking about. Spring break may have passed us by, but we can still recreate the vibe with a dab of neon here and there. 2. Color – White There’s just something timeless about white-on-white outfits that make it a constant go-to during summer. 3. Print – Wallpaper They call it grandma’s 60s wallpapers – loud, busy and psychedelic prints are on trend now. Don a “wallpaper print” maxi to keep things retro and stylish at the same time. 4. Fabric – Eyelet Lace Crochet and lace are the easiest ways to add texture and an ethereal mood to an all-white outfit. Add a crocheted vest or eyelet lace skirt to an all-white ensemble to look angelic. 5. Fabric – Leather Leather isn’t just limited to winter. It can also take on brighter pastel hues for a spring-appropriate twist. To rock multiple trends, layer a bright leather trench over a
