These Brands Are Dedicated to Helping in the Age of the Coronavirus

April 24, 2020 at 05:13PM A few weeks back, I began to wonder how the fashion industry would respond to the mass upheaval happening in the world. I got my first response when Christian Siriano announced he’d be personally making masks to address the shortage in New York City. Since then, we’ve shifted our own editorial strategy, and fashion-industry leaders have taken up arms to address the toll COVID-19 has taken on employment, the healthcare system, and life itself. As the world changes before our eyes, we as consumers have the power to re-envision what our world will look like and what brands to support and rally behind. Who wouldn’t want to support the brands that are creating coalitions, maintaining employment, investing in small businesses, and even opening their factories to produce essential medical supplies like face masks? Why wouldn’t we want to consume more consciously and support all those in need during this time? So ahead, we’re shedding light on the fashion brands and retailers that have donated during the crisis (totaling upward of $70 million and 700,000 masks) so that if you do choose to shop during this time, you know what your money is going toward. How it’s helping: AG Jeans announced on its social media channels that it would be committing $1 million to COVID-19 Los Angeles County Response Fund to help support clinics and hospitals across the county and scale up COVID-19 testing. In addition to donating, the company has personally vowed to fight unemployment by continuing to pay and providing

On a Budget? Here’s Our Best Affordable Fashion and Beauty Picks of the Month

April 24, 2020 at 05:00PM Welcome to On the Hunt, a monthly series in which we open the floor (or should we say DMs?) to our Instagram followers to ask their most burning fashion and beauty questions. We’ll select up to five inquiries to answer and offer our advice with shopping picks to match. It’s safe to say that most of us have adjusted our budgets and spending habits in the last month or so and have become more thoughtful than ever about practicality, cost per wear, and categorizing items into needs vs wants. But spending less money doesn’t necessarily have to be a dramatic sacrifice. If we shift our perspectives a bit, shopping smarter can actually be a fun challenge of finding the best items on the internet for the best prices. So whether it’s affordable trends, skincare, basics, or loungewear we’re currently on the hunt for—it just takes a little Internet research to find the best items, which of course is exactly what we’ve done here. Not to make things overly tempting, but these price-conscious items are seriously good. We never knew how much loungewear we needed in our closets until we spent so much time at home. There are so many on-trend options out there right now at all different price points, but don’t worry, we found some seriously stylish and affordable pieces. Want the matching sweats? Say no more. These Reformation shorts won’t last long. A pop of pink makes putting on loungewear feel significantly more fun. Tie-dye biker shorts is

From the Archives: Sophie Grégoire Trudeau on the March 2017 Cover of FASHION

April 24, 2020 at 05:15PM “If you were a yoga pose, which one would you be?” I ask Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. We’re midway into our second interview for this feature, and she has just finished describing the thrill of barefooting—which is waterskiing without skis. “You have to be at high speeds, and when you fall, it’s like falling on cement,” she says. “It’s rough, but the sensation is amazing when you’re on your feet.” She tells me that her other athletic pursuits venture from fairly calm (cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tennis) to borderline extreme (skydiving, ice climbing and underwater diving with her husband, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau). Her less extreme adventures include yoga and pranayama (controlling the breath). So, back to the pose that best describes this certified hatha yoga instructor’s character. “That’s a funny question!” she says, laughing. “It’s tempting to say the wheel with one leg up [Eka Pada Chakrasana] because it’s just so heart opening, but I think the Baddha Konasana, or sitting pose, is the most challenging one for me because I have to be seated, calm, relaxed and focused.” I’m not sure whether asanas, or poses, reveal one’s character, but it’s not surprising to me that Grégoire Trudeau would excel at the one-legged wheel pose. I imagine there’s a certain extroverted rush from mastering that move, and I’m getting the sense that Grégoire Trudeau embraces her extroversion like metal shavings to a magnet. “I’m an only child,” she explains. “I was taught to go toward

Bella Hadid Fronts the First FaceTime Campaign Shoot

April 24, 2020 at 03:38PM We’re all adapting to working from home as we continue to shelter in place as the COVID-19 pandemic continues across Canada and the rest of the world. The situation has forced businesses and their employees to adapt to new ways of working – including those in the fashion industry. Case in point: Bella Hadid starring in the first fashion campaign shot via FaceTime for Jacquemus. Working with designer Simon Porte Jacquemus and photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti, Hadid shot a series of images modelling pieces from the brand’s S/S20 collection. Naturally, the campaign is called ‘Jacquemus at Home.’ Sharing the images via Instagram, Hadid wrote that shooting the campaign was the “best few hours…reconnecting.” In the snaps, Bella sports an array of pieces from the brand’s 10th anniversary collection including knitted crops, an oversized white tailored suit, various bralettes, bodysuits, sunglasses, and some very specifically placed handbags. View this post on Instagram @jacquemus 2020 @ Home / by my angel friends Simón& @blackpierreange … Best few hours… ? Reconnecting…. ? A post shared by Bella ? (@bellahadid) on Apr 23, 2020 at 11:42am PDT //www.instagram.com/embed.js The release of the images marks the first time a major label has adopted the FaceTime approach for a campaign, though we suspect it will be far from the only one utilizing this approach in the months to come. The pandemic is forcing fashion brands to rethink the ways in which they approach seasonal collections, and subsequently shows and campaigns. Earlier this

How Toronto Jewellery Brand Biko Is Highlighting Frontline Workers

April 24, 2020 at 02:45PM What started as a simple gesture of goodwill grew into a heartwarming highlight reel for Corrine Anestopoulos of Biko. As the COVID-19 crisis took hold and she found herself learning more about the issues faced by essential and frontline workers, Anestopoulos says, “I knew I had to pivot my attention and do something productive” to help others in need. After donating to Toronto’s Sistering organization, which works with at-risk women and trans people, Anestopoulos set her sights on a giveaway project for frontline workers who would be nominated by family and friends in Biko’s network. After posting details through the brand’s online platforms, she was shocked by the outpouring of stories about nurses, doctors, pharmacists and more. “My inbox was just flooded,” she says. “I was like, this is beyond me, this is beyond my personal community. And the stories are just unreal—it’s amazing that people are still functioning while keeping a smile on their face.” View this post on Instagram About a week ago, we created a mini-series titled ✨ ‘Daily Hero’ ✨ to commemorate the incredible submissions we received in response to our Gift-Away. . 3 Signs You’re Not Exfoliating Enough If You’re Over 40

April 24, 2020 at 02:00PM Exfoliating is an essential step in any skincare routine. It sloughs off dead skin cells and unclogs pores while leaving your skin fresh and glowy. You could be using the nicest skincare products in the world, but if you’re not exfoliating on the regular, those fancy serums, creams, etc. might not be living up to their potential because you’ve got a lot of dead skin cell buildup. Not to mention, starting your exfoliating routine early will have your future self thanking you. “Exfoliating young skin serves mostly to keep skin glowing and blemish-free,” says Suneel Chilukuri, MD, of Refresh Dermatology. “As a teenager and young adult, your body naturally has more cellular turnover and often greater sebum production. Natural cell turnover slows with age, which results in pigmentary changes (sun spots), fine lines, and dryness. Some would say exfoliating becomes even more important at this stage to keep stimulate new cell growth and healthier skin.” But that doesn’t mean it’s just for those with youthful skin. It benefits everyone, regardless of age. For those with “mature” skin, Chilukuri says that regular exfoliating will promote cell turnover and prevent a sallow appearance over time. Women with mature skin might be afraid to exfoliate because they’re wary of damaging or drying out their skin, but it’s still an important step if you’re doing it correctly and using the right products. So what are some signs that you’re not exfoliating enough if you’re over 40? Chilukuri gave us a few watch-outs: 1. Your skin is dull:

Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Designer Andrew Coimbra

April 24, 2020 at 02:00PM As people around the country wind down their sixth week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. Andrew Coimbra, Designer Wheeewwww!

The last few weeks have been a very unique and challenging experience. Like many, I’ve become incredibly focused on the climbing numbers that reflect the infection rates across the world, the new government protocols in response to those numbers, and the personal stories coming from friends all over the world. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel consumed by it. It feels like we’re living in a Margaret Atwood novel!

It should go without saying that my heart goes out to my friends and members of my family who are in the healthcare industry. I have made a point of touching base to check in with them often, and making sure that they have a non-healthcare industry person to vent to. People underestimate how emotionally exhausting a role in healthcare can be on a ‘normal’ day, and that the opportunity to escape the internal politics of it all can be a gift.

In the meantime, I have been keeping myself busy—or I should say, I have been made to be kept busy by virtue of my living situation.

Kate Middleton Just Wore the One Dress Brand We Are Obsessed With

April 24, 2020 at 01:48PM In the ’90s, Ghost was one of the first places you’d visit when looking for a new dress, as its silky slip dresses were the height of cool. However, the brand gradually became seen as a destination for pastel bridesmaid frocks and occasion-wear only. But Ghost has become cool again over the past year or so, thanks to a reboot of its button-front tea dresses and silky midi dresses. And our team, like the many influencers we follow on Instagram, are all in agreement that this is now one of the very best places to snap up a quality dress in 2020. And it turns out Kate Middleton also agrees, as yesterday she wore a blue floral £90 Marley dress to stand outside her home with the family and clap for our carers. This clip was shown on The Big Night In on BBC, and unsurprisingly the dress almost instantly sold out. Kate’s dress is in a powdery blue shade, and the rest of the family is also wearing blue, which feels like a deliberate nod to the colour of the NHS.  Ghost has repositioned itself as one of those labels you see all over your Instagram feeds. The dresses all have a similar aesthetic, with midi lengths, bold floral prints and a use of vibrant colours. Keep scrolling to see how our team and influencers share their own Ghost pieces; then shop our edit of the best ones. Style Notes: Who What Wear’s Hannah wears the gorgeous satin Ayla dress. Match

Impact of Cyber Bullying On the Youth
