If You Hate Heavy Facial SPFs, These Tinted Formulas Are Worth Knowing About

May 30, 2020 at 06:30AM If you’re anything like me, you’ll know what it’s like to absolutely loathe everything about facial SPF. Not only does it feel uncomfortable, sticky and often greasy on the skin, but it also, more often than not, leaves behind a ghostly white cast and makes your complexion look impossibly oily. And don’t get me wrong—I know that facial SPF formulas have come a long way, but let’s face it. We’re not quite there yet, are we? And it seems everyone struggles with facial SPFs for different reasons. Some find that the ingredients irritate their dry and sensitive skin, while others struggle with the way that the oily formulas sit on their already oily skin. Personally, I’m in the latter category. I like a glow, but I find that so many SPFs make my pores look triple their size, and applying any sort of makeup over the top in an attempt to rectify the situation is out of the question (unless I actually want to chase it around my face all day). No, facial SPF is not the one, but we have to wear it. And I have definitely settled on my favourite formulas that I know not to stray from. However, this year there’s a new type of facial SPF on the scene and I am all in. For days like these when applying a full face of makeup seems counterintuitive but I still want to feel like myself, I’ve been opting for tinted SPFs. Before this year,

Trust Me—These High-Street Beauty Products Smell as Good as Any Luxury Ones

May 30, 2020 at 06:00AM You might already know Arket as the place to find chic but generally inexpensive basics. The high-street store, launched in 2017 by the H&M group, has cornered the market on offering a minimalist dream with a Scandinavian edge. The pieces are trend-led and therefore manage to stay true to current looks, yet they’ll also tick the box of being classic staples for seasons and years to come. What you might not know is that Arket is also a great place to go for beauty products. It doesn’t have a huge range, but what it does offer, it does well.  Available in its collection are hand balm, hand lotion, body lotion, body wash, hand wash and scented candles in a variety scents, including vetiver (my personal favourite), geranium, oakmoss, neroli, and rosemary—all of which smell way more expensive than the price point. Hudson’s Bay Joins Growing List of Fashion Brands on Animal Crossing

May 29, 2020 at 09:47PM Much like Tiger King, baking banana bread and sharing your workout online, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing has become synonymous with our new socially distanced lives. The game has existed for more than 20 years, though the fifth installment, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, was released on March 20 of this year right as lockdown measures went into place across most of the globe. To date, it has more than 11 million users. The fashion industry was quick to jump on board: Valentino recreated a series of archival looks for the characters and Marc Jacobs designed a six-piece collection specifically for the game. Plus, creators are helping to bring some of the buzziest brands – think Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Gucci – to players of the game via dedicated Instagram pages like Nook Street Market and Crossing The Runway. Once users see an outfit they like, they simply put the design ID into the game and the clothes appear in their virtual closets. Now, iconic Canadian retailer Hudson’s Bay is getting in on the action. In celebration of its 350th anniversary this year, the brand has created digital versions of two pieces from its anniversary collaboration collection with Armor Lux for users to access in the game. Featuring the iconic HBC stripe, the Breton long-sleeve top and Breton merino wool sweater can be accessed via design codes shared on The Bay’s social media platforms. Speaking about the decision to collaborate with the game, Meghan Nameth, the senior vice president at the

Texture Talk: 4 At-Home Deep Conditioning Treatments to Revive Curly Hair

May 29, 2020 at 07:32PM Welcome to Texture Talk, a new weekly column that celebrates and deep dives into the dynamic world of curls, from springy S-patterns to densely-packed coils — because curly hair is far from one big category. This week is all about the best at-home deep conditioning treatments that work on all curls, plus are easily accessible during this self-isolation period. In mid-March, I was all set and scheduled to visit my hairstylist for a much-needed trim and salon treatment to finally rid me of my split ends. Then the outside world began to shut down and quarantine life began. Now, more than two months into stay-at-home orders, and my type 4 curls have found themselves under major strain, becoming increasingly dry, brittle and lifeless — and so has my energy to really do anything about it. But this past Sunday I was forced to light a self-care fire under my butt as I traded in my once-fantasized — and planned — big white wedding nuptials for a small, virtual wedding ceremony. It ended being a marvellous affair, and my coils were equally as excellent. That’s because as I was DIYing my own wash-and-go curl routine Sunday morning, I decided to try the keratin protein and black rice-spiked Nexxus Keraphix Masque ($6) that I had picked up at Shoppers Drug Mart. Courtesy of Nexxus Canada I applied it thoroughly throughout my hair after I shampooed, and left it in for about 15 to 20 minutes while I

How Calgary’s Honubelle is Making Inclusive Swimwear That’s Stylish and Sustainable

May 29, 2020 at 07:02PM Launched over ten years ago, Alberta-based swimwear brand Honubelle continues to push the dial when it comes to the style world’s most important topics. “I love to portray women of all shapes, sizes and colours,” says founder Julia Barnes about Honubelle’s approach to design and photography. Here, Barnes shares more about the sustainability-focused vision behind her line, why inclusive representation is important to her, and how Canada’s natural beauty proves as inspiring as those who wear her designs. Tell us about starting the brand. Do you have a background in design? I don’t. I actually have a background in accounting. But I always wanted to design; actually it was more about making garments and garment production that I was interested in. I dabbled in making a few things here and there for myself and friends, and I thought to myself, ok, I love sewing and creating but I need to find my voice in that. It was so obvious yet somehow so hidden—it’s surf culture that I’ve always felt that I belonged to in a way, so that’s what I wanted to create. At first it wasn’t apparent what that was going to look like, but over the years the more I thought about it, I thought swimwear was what I wanted to create. So, I married my passion for wind and surf sports with trying to come up with a swimwear brand. View this post on Instagram urban dreams * thanks @karleensamson for reminding

Friday Faves

May 29, 2020 at 05:07PM Hi friends! Happy Friday! How’s the week been? It’s been a pretty good one over here, minus a little sleep regression. (We’ve been in an awesome groove for so long but unfortunately hit a regression.) This feels pretty real to me right now: It should be a pretty low-key weekend. We’re looking forward to swimming at my dad’s, watching the movie Scoob and I’ll be getting everything out for Monday’s Home Workout Warrior! It’s not too late to join in. The cost jumps tomorrow and I’d love to have you in the workout party. Click here to sign up! It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party. This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below. Read, watch, listen: We got back into watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after taking a bit of a hiatus – we stopped halfway through season 2 and resumed it this week – and it’s been everything I needed. It’s witty, fun, and the costumes are insane. I’m excited to start Season 3 this week and see what happens! Validation for my inability to be an early bird. One of the girls’ favorite places, Playformance, is hosting an online summer camp here with lots of class options if you want to check it out for the kiddos! Fashion + beauty: Did a little bit

One Item 4 Ways—the Instagram Trend Giving Me So Many Outfit Ideas

May 29, 2020 at 05:29PM I’m not sure whether it is because I work in the industry or not, but each time I make a new clothing purchase, I always, always think about price per wear. How many times will I utilise this item, I ask myself? Does it go with the rest of the clothes in my closet? It is versatile enough to be worn all year round? Livia Firth, the founder and director of Eco-Age, began the #30Wear campaign, a concept that encourages people to consider whether they will wear an item at least 30 times before making a purchase. And while wearing an item 30 times might not seem like an arduous task, finding innovative ways to wear the same item can sometimes be somewhat of a challenge. Thankfully, influencers everywhere are proving that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with outfit (or item) repeating, regularly offering up a plethora of new ways to wear the same key piece. From Lucy Williams and her beloved Arket leather blazer to Megan Ellaby and her favourite white tee, Instagram provides an almost daily dose of inspiration for re-wearing the looks you love. Below you’ll find three examples of influencers styling the same piece four different ways, and whether you’re dressing up or dressing down, the following images prove that versatility is key when shopping for new styles. Keep scrolling to see how ASOS Lotte, Megan Ellaby and Lucy Williams style the same piece four different ways. Next up, the biggest S/S 20

The Genius Hair Clip Hack for Face Masks to Help Alleviate Pressure on Your Ears

May 29, 2020 at 05:11PM Face masks have become de rigueuer since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Fashion brands across Canada are creating masks for consumers in various colours, textures and styles, and in addition to being a protective measure, the masks are also becoming a way for people to express their individual style. And now, hairstylist Olivia Smalley – who goes by the name OMG Artistry on Instagram – has served up quite the nifty little hair clip hack to help alleviate pressure on the ears from the elasticized loops on a face mask. Sharing two short videos on Instagram, Smalley (who went viral back in April when she shared a video of a hair hack that leaves you with a professional-looking blowout without using a hairdryer) used a chic hair clip to secure the elastic loop on the mask to the hair. “Ears hurt? Grab a clip to hold back mask. And not to mention it looks so cute,” she wrote in the caption – and she’s not wrong. View this post on Instagram ???Mask Hack. Ears hurt?
