How the Olsen Twins helped me discover blazers are the key to living your best life
November 13, 2018 at 03:59AM Every woman has those power pieces that supercharge her personal style. And we’ve found, by walking up to enough strangers on the street (and women in our own office), that if you gas her up, she’ll share her best fashion advice with you. Starting today, we’re collecting these pearls of wisdom in a new series, Good Style. First up is our associate beauty editor Rachel Lapidos, who swears blazers are the key to living her best life. Keep reading to hear why and how they came to be her sartorial spirit animal. To me, blazers are kind of like a really good pair of jeans or a bold lip in that putting one on immediately makes me feel more confident. I started wearing them in high school in Texas, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the Olsen Twins when they used to be on the cover of US Weekly all the time, rocking blazers in the coolest way possible. I got so lucky back then on my hunts while shopping at Goodwills and Salvation Army stores—even sometimes in the little boys’ sections. Lately though, I’ve been going to Etsy for my vintage shopping. I found my red blazer there—I like them a little longer, structured, and oversized; it makes them more interesting. Photo: Well+Good Creative At this point, I wear them literally everywhere, pretty much all year long. They look great with all different types of shirts: band T-shirts or just vintage T-shirts in
Constantly losing one earring? Here’s some good news for you
November 09, 2018 at 09:00AM Watching Desperately Seeking Susan for the first time as an impressionable 14-year-old was a revelatory experience. It taught me that personal ads are a great source of entertainment (R.I.P Craiglist’s missed connections), there’s no such thing as a free jacket, and most importantly, that all you need for a look is exactly one statement earring. The first time I felt bold enough to experiment with this idea, I was trying to be glass half full about losing a giant, bejeweled cross earring. (It’s honestly still painful to type about.) Instead of calling it a day and burying the other one somewhere I wouldn’t be visually triggered by it, I decided to wear it with another orphaned earring from my jewelry box. Aside from finding a second life for my widowed accessory, asymmetrical earrings are one of those things (like leisure suits or pattern mixing) that just eschews an ere of competence with complex styling. And even if you’re not into the other jewelry revivals from the ’80s, this is still a trend you can get behind without dating your look. The style trick works equally well with more delicate and minimal pieces. To start, you can scrounge through your collection to see if you have any single earrings that speak to you, or you can buy a mismatched pair or standalone statement maker from someone who’s done the work already. For the latter, below is a selection of earrings—some individual, some asymmetrical pairs, and some matching sets that
Your A to Z guide for winter jacket styles and shopping
November 03, 2018 at 09:57AM We’re finally making that seasonal shift (no, not daylight saving time) from sweater weather to outerwear no longer being elective. It’s a wardrobe transition that confounds more than a few every year. Since your coat is essentially your outfit for an entire season, the sartorial stakes are pretty high. The market is completely oversaturated with more options than you could ever sift through—a problem which led to the creation of this glossary of winter jacket styles. Shopping for a coat comes down to picking the style that both fits your aesthetic and your cold weather requirements. But you can pretty much find every jacket style with different levels of insulation so what it’s really a matter of homing in on a silhouette and letting that filter down your options. “Brands that focus on material and construction quality are the same brands that are thinking about the longevity of their designs in the ever-changing, trend-driven fashion landscape.” —Jeff Johnson, co-founder and creative director of outerwear brand The Arrivals To help you do this, take some advice from Jeff Johnson, co-founder and creative director of outerwear brand The Arrivals. “Follow quality,” he says. “Brands that focus on material and construction quality are the same brands that are thinking about the longevity of their designs in the ever-changing, trend-driven fashion landscape.” When you’re looking for a jacket that’ll work this season (as well as for seasons to come), Johnson suggests asking yourself a few questions: “Does the product keep you warm and
I’m really sorry but your earbud usage is permanently damaging your hearing
November 01, 2018 at 07:26AM I’m a little deaf in my left ear. It hasn’t always been that way, but in the last few years, I’ve noticed that if someone is trying to talk into it in a crowded room, I have to offer them my right ear instead. This is no coincidence. I’ve loved loud music since I was a teenager—in the car, in my earbuds, in SoulCycle—and according to Alison Grimes, AuD, Director of the Audiology Clinic for UCLA Health, exposure to high-intensity noise permanently destroys your ability to hear. Period. “Cells in the inner ear are physically damaged and do not regenerate,” she says. Filed under “not fair”: Some people do have “tougher” ears than others, says Dr. Grimes, which means they won’t experience hearing loss with the same exposure as others; however, she tells me there’s no way to predict in advance which category you’re in, which means you won’t know you have delicate ears until it’s too late. “If, after taking out your earbuds or earphones, your ears feel ‘stuffy,’ ‘cottony,’ or sounds sound dimmed or muffled, then it was too loud and the damage is done.” —Alison Grimes, AuD These individual variances are the reason it’s impossible for Dr. Grimes to tell me exactly how loud is too loud, or what volume level is safe for your earbuds and beyond. There are regulations in place for occupational noise exposure, but she says these are based on averages—and again, not everyone has an “average” threshold.
The new earring trend that turned up all over the streets of Fashion Month
October 03, 2018 at 09:04AM It’s official: We’re living in an era of anything-goes fashion. Thanks to social media, you can now source style inspo for so. many. places. So, whenever any one trend starts standing out (looking at you, athleisure) it attracts attention. One thing I kept noticing during my endless scrolls through street style photos from the fashion shows this past month were women wearing diamond strand earrings. Think: tennis bracelets but for your ears. These swinging statement earrings add a glittery finishing touch to high-fashion outfits, as well as an unexpected embellishment to streetwear styles. These swinging statement earrings showed up on lobes in New York City, London, Milan, and Paris. And their universal appeal isn’t just geographic. They added a glittery finishing touch to high-fashion outfits, as well as an unexpected embellishment to streetwear styles. While I’m sure at least some of the well-heeled women who attend fashion shows were wearing actual diamonds, in all likelihood, at least a few strands of sparklers were actually diamantes (or adorned with artificial gemstones like cubic zirconia). Either way, they were the coolest new accessory I clocked all month, making them my biggest fall earring trend for 2018. Better yet? They’ll still be in style come holiday season. 8 strand earrings to shop now and still wear later Buy Now Swarovski Fluid Drop Pierced Earring $299 Buy Now Baublebar Charlotte Drop Earrings $38 Buy Now Swarovski Fit Clip Earrings $129 Buy Now Gigi & Joux Ella Diamond And Sterling
H&M’s eco-friendly fall collection wants your attention, conscientious consumers
October 01, 2018 at 12:02PM Fast fashion has never been synonymous with sustainability. Quite the opposite actually. But, as millennial shoppers (AKA these brands’ target audience) grow more conscientious with their consumption, that’s starting to change. Case in point? H&M is launching its first eco-friendly fall collection. The autumn/winter offerings are part of a Conscious Exclusive line, which the Swedish retailer introduced two springs ago. “It all started with a desire to create a statement coat in a sustainable material that could be worn for both those special occasions and day-to-day life, but then evolved into something more substantial,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M, in a press release. H&M’s designers used eco-friendly materials like recycled wool, cashmere, polyester, and Econyl, a fabric made from recycled plastic—plus, 100 percent organic fibers like silk—to create a 32-piece capsule of womenswear, lingerie, and accessories, ranging from a $15 pair of dusty-rose-colored underwear to a dolman-sleeved jacket ($300) embroidered with recycled sequins. The end result is as chic as it is sustainable. Photo: H&M The line is also proving that sustainability, in addition to innovative of-the-moment style, sells. The collection only dropped on September 27, but some items have already sold out, like a pair of statement clip-on earrings that resemble cascading orchid petals and a sweatshirt hood covered in black sequins. Other notable offerings, such as a cozy V-neck sweater and a velvet miniskirt aren’t likely to last long, either. That items are already flying off shelves bodes well for H&M’s bigger goals: It
