May 23, 2020 at 02:00PM Victoria’s Secret plans to close stores across Canada and the US Photography by Taylor Hill/FilmMagic After plenty of media attention and the affects of COVID-19, the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, L Brands, has announced that they will close one quarter of its retail stores in the US and Canada. Partial closures due to COVID-19 are said to be responsible for a 55 per cent sale of the brand falling through and thus putting the company at risk. The lingerie giant has been criticized for not evolving and for a number of questionable comments from its executives in recent years. Since cancelling any future fashion shows, the brand has made moves to modernize with the introduction of a more diverse group of models including plus sized and transgender models, however closures due to quarantine have still had their affect and Victoria’s Secret’s presence in Canada will soon be limited. May 23, 2020 at 01:00PM Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande released a single The second song from Lady Gaga’s Chromatica album is out now, and it’s a collaboration with none other than Ariana Grande. The two pop music mavens have teamed up on “Rain On Me,” whose lyrics, according to Gaga, are “about an analogy of tears being the rain.” In a conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, she said, “And you know what it’s also a metaphor for, is the amount of drinking that I was doing to numb myself. I’d rather be dry. I’d rather not be drinking, but I haven’t died yet. I’m still alive. Rain on me. Okay, I’m going to keep on drinking. This song has many layers.” The video, which dropped on Friday afternoon, features the two, wearing latex bodysuits and babydoll dresses, dancing in the rain against an intergalactic backdrop. .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoAm4om0wTs] A new meme went viral If you spent any time on the internet this past week, you would’ve noticed endless variations of a certain meme popping up. In celebration of her milestone birthday, we’re taking a look back at 50 of her best looks from across the decades – from her iconic Vivienne Westwood plaid moment to every Met Gala red carpet she’s ever stepped foot on and everything in between, there’s been no shortage of major moments. Simon Porte Jacquemus Enlists His Grandmother for Newest FaceTime Shoot
May 22, 2020 at 04:20PM Last month, Bella Hadid fronted the first major campaign shot over FaceTime for French cool-girl brand Jacquemus. The shoot went viral – for all the right reasons – and now designer Simon Porte Jacquemus is back at it, except this time around he’s chosen someone a little closer to home to front the newest images. Overnight, Jacquemus debuted his latest shoot featuring none other than this grandmother Liline. Sharing the images on Instagram, Jacquemus – who, in addition to Bella, has also worked closely with Gigi, Rosalia and Emily Ratajkowski – wrote that this shoot is “one of the most special [stories] for me.” In the photos, Liline can be seen sporting a variety of the brand’s ‘gram-worthy pieces, well and truly proving that style knows no age limits. There’s a fuchsia suit adorned with several of the brand’s handbags, and a white oversized suit that looks perfect against Liline’s hot pink fence in her backyard (we have so many questions about this – was it already there? When did she decide she wanted a hot pink fence? Why are you so cool Liline?). There’s also a voluminous green dress shot by a field that is truly beautiful, as well as some A-grade accessories close-ups. If you’re looking for something to put a smile on your face today, we guarantee this will do it. See how the shoot played out in the carousels below: View this post on Instagram ?? #JACQUEMUSATHOME WITH MY GRAND MOTHER
Toronto’s Nouveau Riche Vintage Gets Personal in a New Instagram Series
May 22, 2020 at 02:58PM After two years of selling vintage wares full-time, Andrea Lalonde, the Toronto-based Montreal transplant, found a permanent home for her business in Toronto’s busy Parkdale neighbourhood last winter. Nouveau Riche Vintage has evolved from a series of pop-ups to its own stand-alone shop that offers rare gems of the capital-F fashion variety (Pucci, anyone?) to more obscure but nevertheless fantastic pieces from both Canadian and international designers who worked throughout decades past. Lalonde has cultivated a community of collaborators throughout the shop’s network, and with quarantine keeping her customers at home over the last few months, she devised a creative way to showcase how her eye-catching pieces could live in our evolving day-to-day. The Instagram series ‘Nouveau Chez Vous’ captures the balance between fashion fantasy and quarantine reality. We spoke to Lalonde, who has a background in the arts, about creating the images, what it’s like running a vintage business during COVID-19, and how she’s staying hopeful. What inspired you to get into the vintage business in the first place? Even when I worked in museums, I was interested in textile. And when I taught young people, I wanted to teach them about material culture as much as about art. I’ve always been into fashion, but in the art world, it seemed frivolous or secondary. I am now seeing that clothing and fashion history is important. It links us all. It is endlessly fascinating. Vintage really began as more of a side project–a passion for

This New COVID-19 Relief Merch Collection is Designed as a Message of Hope for Toronto
May 21, 2020 at 09:53PM As COVID-19 continues to impact our world, brands continue to find ways to give back to the community at a much-needed time. From Aritzia’s sponsor packages for frontline healthcare workers, to fashion brands designing face masks with charitable giveback elements, there’s been an outpouring of support from brands and consumers alike since the pandemic began. Now, a new initiative has popped up called See You Soon Toronto. The brainchild of graphic artist Ben Johnston, developer Brian Brown and etalk reporter Tyrone Edwards, the five-piece See You Soon Toronto merch collection was designed as a sort of cool love letter to the city to aid COVID-19 relief efforts. The collection includes two T-shirts, two sweaters and an art print – 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sales of the items will be distributed among various beneficiaries working to support frontline workers, hospitality staff and mental health support services in the six, including Feed the Frontlines TO and Fred Victor. Speaking with FASHION about the initiative, Brown explained, “We are truly fortunate to be living in the City of Toronto. It’s a world class city! COVID-19 was something that nobody could have predicted – it was like someone just shut the tap off in the economy. It cut us off from sports, music, restaurants and so many other things that had become a part of our daily life and it put such a strain on others like those in the healthcare industry. So we knew
Make Nourishing Meals During Quarantine With These Easy Tips
May 21, 2020 at 09:34PM Faryn Thompson, founder of an online food resource called Fair Fare, has just released an e-cookbook titled Nourish filled with, yes, nourishing recipes that are uncomplicated enough to make with ease during quarantine. “The whole point of the e-book is to keep things simple, not feel intimidated, and encourage people to be inspired and confident to create on their own, and use these recipes as a guideline,” says Thompson. Based in Toronto, where she grew up cooking and gardening, Thompson travelled to Bali in 2019 to study permaculture, a design system for ecological and sustainable farming. The experience renewed her interest in growing her own food and exploring the connection between gardening and eating, leading her to launch Fair Fare in February 2020. “Growing your own food, cooking simple meals, and using more natural products is a way to care for yourself,” says Thompson. “A lot of us are disconnected from the the products we buy to eat, but there’s something so powerful about growing your own food. You don’t need a huge garden—you can even just start sprouting your own seeds in a little Tupperware container or mason jar. It’s as easy as buying seeds from your local grocery store or garden centre, planting them in soil as per the package instructions and finding a sunny spot on your counter for them to thrive.” Read on for more tips from Thompson on how to provide and experience nourishment during this challenging time, as well
