Sophie Grégoire Trudeau Just Launched a Podcast About Mental Well-Being

May 05, 2020 at 05:33PM “There will be no taboo left behind,” Sophie Grégoire Trudeau promises in the introductory trailer to her new podcast, WE Well-being. Canadian Artisan Product Sales Have Grown ‘Exponentially’ of Late, According to Simons

May 05, 2020 at 03:35PM By week’s end, we will have hit the two-month mark of social distancing. Whilst it’s undoubtedly been a tough transition, and one that, despite the length of the situation, still doesn’t feel totally ‘normal’, there has been plenty of good that has come out of our new reality. We’ve reconnected with friends and family, learned the value and importance of separating work from home life and as consumers, have taken stock of what brands we want to support with our money moving forward. And according to Quebec retailer Simons, an increasing number of us have chosen to support Canadian artisans during this time. Fabrique 1840 is the department store’s digital platform that highlights and supports artisans across the country. At present, it has 117 creators in its lineup. In a press release announcing the expansion of the program, the company noted that in the past 14 months, sales through Fabrique 1840 have topped one million dollars. What’s more is that in the past eight weeks since most of the country entered social distancing, Simons says that traffic and sales on the platform have experienced “exponential growth” – showing that Canadians are rallying behind small businesses and craftsmanship at a time when it is needed most. “We are clearly seeing a renewed interest and desire from Canadian consumers to support and sustain local design and makers of hand-crafted goods,” Peter Simons, the company’s president, said in a release. “Fabrique 1840 is now a well-established, proven ecosystem

Caitlin Moran on Adapting Her Novel, How to Build a Girl, Starring Beanie Feldstein

May 04, 2020 at 10:20PM These days, Caitlin Moran is all about positivity. It wasn’t always that way. As a teen, the British journalist/novelist got her break cutting down bands as a famously acerbic rock critic – “I became unbelievably vicious,” she admits. It’s an experience she’d turn into a semi-autobiographical best-seller, now a feature film starring Beanie Feldstein, Alfie Allen and Emma Thompson. Following How to Build a Girl’s premiere at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival, FASHION sat down with Moran to talk about casting Beanie as her “rock dick” alter ego, adapting her own novel, and choosing positivity over cynicism. I’m not sure if you know, but Beanie Feldstein was on the cover of FASHION recently. Because she is the thing, isn’t she? I went to the London premiere of Booksmart, and the atmosphere when she walks into a room… She’s transcended really quickly. When did you know she was the right person for this? The minute they rang up. We started developing this around about the year 1753… Making a movie takes so long! I’m a journalist and I’m a writer, so I’m used to like, [snaps fingers]. And I didn’t realize when we first started adapting the [book] that it would be almost impossible to make. Because to cast someone who’s playing a big, working class 16-year-old girl who can play optimistic and cheerful, but is really funny, turns into this massive diva, goes completely Vader, but is also doing sex scenes that are funny,

How Mei Pang’s Tattoos Send a Powerful Message of Self-Liberation

May 04, 2020 at 09:55PM Interesting fact: Most of Mei Pang’s tattoos are symmetrical. “I tell people that what you see on one side of my body, you see on the other side,” comments the Toronto-based makeup artist and beauty influencer. How many body stamps does the 23-year-old have in total? About 80. Pang’s earliest tattoo, a large chrysanthemum located on the middle of her stomach that was inked when she was the fresh age of 18, was inspired by Rihanna’s giant tat of the Egyptian goddess Isis on her sternum. “I was always into hair, makeup and piercings, so I feel like tattoos, for me, were the next natural transition,” says Pang. In her mind as a first-timer, the bigger the ink job the more braced she’d be down the road. “I thought it would essentially prep me for the rest of the tattoos I wanted to get in my life—that the others were going to be an absolute piece of cake,” she says. But having since gone on to ink a running list of areas, like her head, neck and butt, Pang was dead wrong. “That was a terrible lie I told myself,” she laughs. Photograph courtesy of Mei Pang Most of Pang’s skin art has been done by Toronto tattoo artist Corben Matsell-Savage, and her most recent—a pair of panthers, one on each side of her belly button, encircling a spiderweb—ended up being her most painful to date. “They’re maybe a little less than a foot in

Corey Moranis’ New Collection Brings a Bit of Spring Into Your Wardrobe

May 04, 2020 at 06:15PM Dance and design, what a match made in heaven; and the campaign for jewellery designer Corey Moranis’ newest pieces is heavenly indeed. Through the movements and gestures of Winnipeg-based dancer and choreographer Kaja Irwin, her Spring collection comes to life, and at a time when elevating experiences are most appreciated. Moranis will inspire you in other ways, too, through her donation commitments to COVID-19 relief—recipients change bi-weekly and have included Food Banks Canada and the Women’s College Hospital—and ways she’s staying connected to her community. We caught up with the Toronto-based creative to find out more details about the collection, her ultra-calming playlist, and what went down during the Scarborough Bluffs video shoot with Irwin. Tell me about the new shapes found in the Spring collection. What were some inspirations you were working with? The newest shapes from the Spring collection are all very loopy! I was inspired to come up with more organic and figurative shapes than [seen in] previous collections. Being able to produce a flower, for example, was really exciting, and the loop bracelet has an ornamental feeling inspired by the spiral on a Greek column. It’s fun and challenging to bend loops out of Lucite, so a lot of results come from experimenting. I’d love to expand on these shapes in the future. What was it like working with Kaja for the campaign? Why did you decide to incorporate dance into the video? Kaja Irwin is one of my closest friends,

The Met Gala is Going Digital – Here’s How You Can Attend This Year’s Event Online

May 04, 2020 at 04:40PM Ah, the first Monday in May. Usually the biggest day on fashion’s calendar, this year looks a little different in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, that doesn’t mean the show isn’t going on at all. Though the stars won’t be gracing the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art this evening, the Costume Institute is bringing a little of its newest exhibition, About Time: Fashion and Duration, to the public today. According to WWD, the Met is releasing some content on the new exhibition, as well as from past Met Galas, online. So not only will you get a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s exhibition (which covers 150 years of fashion), you’ll also likely spot a famous face (or fifteen) in the archival gala footage. Additionally, the organization is encouraging people to take part in the #MetGalaChallenge online. The task is simple: re-create your favourite standout look from the Met Gala red carpet, take a picture of yourself and upload it to Insta. Billy Porter has been tasked with selecting the best looks which will then appear on the Met, Costume Institute and Vogue US Instagram pages. As it stands, the exhibition has been delayed until October 29. As for the actual Met Gala, a spokeswoman told the site, “The gala is still under discussion.” Elsewhere on the internet today, a group of college students are also hosting their own virtual Met Gala party. As reported by the New York Times, the first High Fashion Twitter
