My Story: Creative Director Josef Adamu on the Power of Telling Untold Narratives

June 16, 2020 at 11:05PM Meet Josef Adamu, a creative director who splits his time between Toronto and New York, and who started his own creative agency, Sunday School, from his Toronto basement back in 2017 which has since grown to a team of four. Here, he shares, in his own words, his company’s mission and what fuels him creatively. On growing up: “My parents are Nigerian and they came to Canada in ’89. I was born a few years later in Toronto, and my family bounced around a lot between Toronto and Brampton. I even lived in Calgary, Alberta for one year as well. I’ve always been in a Black space for the most part, meaning I’ve always lived in areas where there was a highly concentrated Black or South Asian community. That was beautiful to me. And I always took note of things. Like, when I went to friends’ houses, I was very inquisitive about where their parents were from. I’ve always been that friend that was questioning everything and I’ve always documented it. When I went to the hair salon, I took note of things. When I went to play basketball with friends, I took note of things. I’ve always made mental notes. And, honestly, those experiences play into what I’m doing now.” On what he does professionally: “Creative director, entrepreneur, visual storyteller. I run a creative agency that brings different creatives together to work on campaign projects, and partner with other companies on projects, that bring

Chosen from 1,200 applicants from 159 countries, the seven winners will receive a $100,000 investment from Cartier into their business – with sectors ranging from healthcare to education, manufacturing and fashion innovation. To date, the Cartier Women’s Initiative (CWI) has “supported more than 240 social impact-driven businesses led and owned by women entrepreneurs, hailing from 56 countries, creating more than 7,000 jobs,” according to a release. It has also granted over $3 million in funding “making it one of the largest and most generous female-focused entrepreneurial competitions in the world.” One of this year’s laureates is Stephanie Benedetto, a New York-based former lawyer who now runs Queen of Raw, an online marketplace for businesses to buy and sell deadstock fabrics and textiles. Kanye West Files Trademark Application for Yeezy Beauty

June 16, 2020 at 04:08PM It’s no secret that the Kardashian-Jenner family knows how to launch a best-selling beauty line – so it makes sense then that Kanye West, husband of Kim and brother-in-law of Kylie, would also be looking to expand his Yeezy empire into the beauty territory. Overnight it was revealed that West filed paperwork for a trademark application for Yeezy Beauty on June 2. According to WWD, the application includes “makeup products such as foundation, mascara, lipstick and body glitter and skincare products like face cream, exfoliants, face masks and body wash, among others.” Additionally, the application also covers personal care items, haircare products and home items such as candles and aromatherapy pillows. This isn’t the first time West has filed paperwork for a beauty trademark – back in 2017, he filed a similar trademark application for DONDA Cosmetics, named after this late mother. He also previously signed a licensing deal with Parlux for a range of fragrances back in 2009, but neither project came to fruition. The Grammy Award winning rapper has built one of the most successful celebrity-led fashion businesses in Yeezy. Earlier this year, Forbes declared West to hold billionaire status as a result of Yeezy and its success. Combine this with the beauty brand launching power of Kris Jenner and Yeezy Beauty might just rule them all. Watch this space. Six Questions With Designer Sid Neigum

June 15, 2020 at 07:49PM For nearly a decade, Sid Neigum has remained one of the most intriguing designers in the Canadian fashion landscape. Originally hailing from Alberta, the now Toronto-based Neigum’s collections have become known for a sense of attainable luxury and attention to craft, with his most recent pieces featuring delicate plissé details and dramatic metallic fabrics. We caught up with Neigum to see what he’s been working on during the COVID-19 crisis, and how he been staying positive through the global pandemic. You’ve been running your brand for almost ten years. What do you know now that you wish you knew then? To have more patience; it’s a marathon, not a sprint. What’s been the biggest and most important change to the global fashion industry that you’ve noticed since launching your brand? I think we are seeing that change right now. Changes to the calendar, timing, overproduction/overconsumption, inclusion, diversity. It is empowering to watch that change unfold and to be able to take part in it. What do you feel has been the biggest key to your success as a designer? Grit and luck. Photography by Brent Goldsmith. How do you keep evolving your brand? Staying curious, learning, and researching. How are you staying positive through the COVID-19 crisis and ongoing protests and actions right now? Meditation, running, reading, listening. Recently I have shifted focus to create level 3 and 4 waterproof medical gowns. It is rewarding to be able to contribute in a positive way. What are

Michael Kors Announces New Approach to Fashion Calendar

June 15, 2020 at 06:07PM In the wake of social distancing measures, store closures and fashion week cancellations as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, brands have begun to reassess the way in which they design and present collections to consumers, with many advocating for change. Today, Michael Kors announced that he will bid farewell to the traditional fashion calendar in favour of a new, more streamlined approach. His announcement follows similar declarations from Gucci and Saint Laurent. In a detailed press release, the American designer revealed that he will not show during NYFW in September (it is still yet to be seen whether this event will go ahead in light of current circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and social distancing) and will instead present his S/S21 collection “sometime between October and mid-November” of this year in an as-yet unknown format. Beyond that, Kors will only present two collections a year for Michael Kors Collection – one for spring/summer and the other for fall/winter – and deliveries of these collections will happen “incrementally” over the season so as to “more closely [reflect] how customers in today’s world actually live and shop.” Furthermore, the brand will sell its collection to retailers ahead of revealing them to the press and public to help introduce a more reasonable pace for retail supply chains and factories. It will also reassess when its Fall collection is released, noting that it will likely be “sometime between mid-March and mid-April.” Kors said these changes are “long overdue” and

Givenchy Names Matthew Williams as New Creative Director

The news comes two months after Clare Waight Keller announced her resignation from the house. The American designer is the man behind cult streetwear brand 1017 Alyx 9SM (which has previously collaborated with Nike, Dior and Moncler), and he will begin work with the brand on June 16. Williams will oversee all areas of the brand, including both men’s and womenswear – his first designs will be presented in October. In a voice note shared on the Givenchy Instagram account, Williams said, “I want to say something about how honoured I am to be taking on the role of Creative Director at Givenchy. It’s been my lifelong dream to be in this position and it’s really surreal that it’s finally here. I’ve worked every day for 15 years towards this single goal and it’s super surreal. At the same time it’s bittersweet because we’re living in unprecedented times in the world, and I just hope in some way I can bring hope,  and with my community and colleagues create positive change for our industry and the world and I’d like to use this platform to do so.” In a statement provided to WWD, Williams added that under his reign Givenchy’s approach will be “based on modernity and inclusivity.” Watch this space.
