June 18, 2020 at 06:03PM With the new documentary Disclosure, executive producer Laverne Cox, director Sam Feder, and producer Amy Scholder offer a much-needed, in-depth look at the history of transgender representation on-screen. The doc sifts through trans portrayals in film and television, going as far back as 1914’s A Florida Enchantment to as recent as 1999’s Boys Don’t Cry and 2018’s Pose. Featuring commentary from Cox and trans artists and creators including Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton, and Chaz Bono, the work outlines how far trans stories have come, their evolution throughout the years, and how they reflect society’s concepts of gender and sexuality. After first premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Disclosure will finally be available to stream on Netflix this Friday, June 19. And it couldn’t come at a more pressing time. The title will hit the streaming platform just days after the Trump administration scrapped legislation that would protect transgender people from health care discrimination, in the wake of author J.K. Rowling’s transphobic tweets and essay, and as Black trans lives continue to be taken—and often forgotten, misgendered, and deadnamed—by racist violence and police brutality. “That’s the paradox of our representation, is the more we are seen, the more we are violated,” advocate and writer Tiq Milan says in the Disclosure trailer. Farago posted a nearly six-minute video earlier this week where she explained that Jowsey broke up from her and said some of the rumors about him were true. Jowsey addressed some of her claims in his own 10-minute response video. Farago had discussed how he had issues with their arguments: “We would argue every now and then, but it was never, for me, relationship-ending, and I think for him, small little things just ended up turning into relationship-ending arguments.” She also said he wanted her to hold off publicly announcing the split: “I was like, ‘Okay, if this is what you want, then let’s announce to everyone,’” she said. “He said that he didn’t want to do that yet because there was rumors and accusations being brought up by people and stuff like that, so he didn’t want to validate those things by releasing that we were going to take a break.” Then she discussed the accusations about him and how their break became permanent despite appearing not to be at first: I personally, genuinely thought that it was just like a two-week thing, and we were going to be fine when I move there, and everything was going to be amazing, and
Normani Doesn’t Want Your Performative Posts—She Needs Action
June 18, 2020 at 04:29PM Urban Decay’s newest UD Global Citizen on moving beyond buzzwords and revolutionizing beauty standards. Normani was forced to reckon with universal beauty standards, ones that didn’t often include Black women like her, from a young age. Starting in elementary school, where she was only one of three Black students, she would study the rich, deep tone of her skin and the kinks and thickness of her hair in the mirror. These are the same qualities classmates cruelly mocked and the ones Normani would wish away in front of the mirror, hoping for a transformation that wouldn’t make her feel like the “other.” “I remember asking my mom to straighten my hair because I became very exhausted, having to explain why my hair appeared so different from theirs,” she tells ELLE.com. “I often wondered what life would’ve been like if my skin were lighter.” Now, instead of following beauty norms, Normani is helping define them. Normani is joining Urban Decay as the brand’s newest UD Global Citizen. The singer joins Urban Decay’s new class of Global Citizens alongside Riverdale star Camila Mendes and Hong Kong singer G.E.M for the brand’s Pretty Different campaign, which celebrates these women for their individuality and unapologetic nature, and pushing boundaries in their respective fields. Each UD Global Citizen will support the brand’s launches, including the newest iteration of Urban Decay’s Naked series, the Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette. Rayshard Brooks Once Spoke Out About Criminal Justice Reform
June 18, 2020 at 04:01PM n June 12, a 27-year-old black man named Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by police during an altercation that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms said didn’t warrant “a justified use of deadly force.” One minute, Brooks was calmly chatting with the two officers who found him sleeping in his car. The next, they were all wrestling on the ground and fighting over a Taser gun. The incident turned deadly when Brooks took the Taser and tried to run away. Two days later, Atlanta’s police chief resigned, and the officer who shot and killed Brooks was fired. He’s been charged with 11 counts, including felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Atlanta citizens incensed by the killing have taken to the streets to protest. June 18, 2020 at 03:26PM Remember when primary debates dominated the headlines? If 2020 has taught us anything—and between the government’s response to the pandemic and the national protests, it’s taught us a lot—it’s that we can’t lose sight of who’s in office. And it’s not just about who sits in the White House. It’s about selecting the state legislators, district attorneys, and sheriffs who wield tremendous power over your community. Though social distancing and threats of voter suppression can make casting a ballot seem intimidating, it’s still the single most effective way of being heard and making a difference. Marisa Tomei Is the Best Part of The King of Staten Island
June 18, 2020 at 03:13PM arisa Tomei has a new movie out. The King of Staten Island is a Judd Apatow-directed comedy-drama inspired by SNL breakout Pete Davidson’s life, including the death of his firefighter father on 9/11. But it’s Tomei who deserves every accolade for her portrayal of Davidson’s saintly mother Margie. The King of Staten Island is a moving film that shows New Yorkers’ resilience after tragedy firsthand, which feels especially pertinent at a time when we could all use a little inspiration (and frankly, something good to watch in quarantine). Equal parts touching and darkly funny, the story is grounded in empathy for its protagonist Scott (Davidson), who struggles to accept his painful loss and waddles through a stunted adolescence, causing his mom a great deal of agita as she attempts to move on. Comedian Bill Burr proves his acting chops as Margie’s love interest, who’s also a firefighter, and Maude Apatow steals every scene as Scott’s younger sister, Claire (based on Davidson’s real-life sister Casey). Over the past three weeks, Tomei, a longtime activist, has been busy using her platform to guide her 1.2 million Instagram followers toward useful resources, including candid conversations about race from
Kristen Wiig and Fiancé Avi Rothman Secretly Welcomed Twins Earlier This Year
June 18, 2020 at 03:09PM Kristen Wiig has reportedly been quarantining as a family of four. Us Weekly reported on Wednesday that the former SNL star secretly welcomed twins via surrogacy with fiancé Avi Rothman earlier this year. Page Six also captured Wiig, Rothman, and their two new arrivals on a walk in Los Angeles yesterday. Neither parent has yet confirmed the news. Wiig kept her motherhood status mostly under wraps. However, she did allude to becoming a parent while hosting an at-home Mother’s Day episode of Saturday Night Live in May. “This is the Mother’s Day show, and at SNL, it’s a very special time to celebrate moms,” Wiig said during her virtual monologue, later adding, “I don’t know if I truly appreciated my mom the first 45 years of my life. But this year I’m feeling especially grateful for her advice, her love. I’m so thankful for all the things she’s taught me, like preparing me to be a mom myself.” This content is imported from YouTube. The couple dated for three years and were first spotted together in 2016 while vacationing in Hawaii. Again, news of their relationship didn’t make headlines until months after their romance began. Wiig was previously married to actor Hayes Hargrove from 2005 to 2009, per People. She

June 18, 2020 at 02:49PM Kate Middleton gave a long and rare candid speech about emotional health to children during her virtual appearance at the Oak National Academy weekly assembly, which aired today. The Duchess touched on the importance of kindness, opening up about how being in quarantine is hard emotionally for everyone, including herself. She said, via Hello!: “We all have our ups and downs, especially when things change in our lives as they have in so many ways recently. This can cause us to have a huge range of different feelings. Sometimes these feelings may be good, but sometimes they may be uncomfortable, and we feel worried, angry or upset. “Being unable to see your friends or spend time with your family will undoubtedly be frustrating for you, just as it is for them. It’s been a really difficult time for us all. But it’s important to know that these feelings and frustrations are totally normal, and that they won’t last forever.” “As we help others, we mustn’t forget to nurture ourselves by taking the time to focus on the things that make us feel happy too. This might be playing our favorite game, being outside, or talking to our friends. They all help with our mental wellbeing. Thank you for inviting me to speak to you today. Look after yourselves, reach out when you need help, and do your part to support those in need.” This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same
