Jennifer McClellan Announces Bid to Become Virginia’s First Black Female Governor

June 18, 2020 at 01:51PM Historically, women have needed to be convinced to enter politics. But since the 2016 presidential election, thousands of women announced their plans to run for public office. And we want them to win. So we’re giving them examples of women who have run. The point: You can too. Back in March, the Washington Post reported that 2020 was Virginia’s Year of the Woman. With Democrats controlling the state’s legislature for the first time in decades, a record number of female lawmakers helped approve the federal Equal Rights Amendment, protect abortion, combat sex discrimination, and more. Then late last month, state delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy announced her bid for governor of Virginia. And today, state Senator Jennifer McClellan has officially joined the race. If either of them were to win the 2021 election, they’d be the first Black female governor of Virginia—and the United States. McClellan spent 11 years in the House of Delegates and then another four in the state Senate; she was the first House member to ever be pregnant while in office. Now, against the backdrop of the pandemic and the ongoing fight for racial justice, McClellan is prepared for more. Below, McClellan on how she decided to run. Iwas always interested in government from a history perspective. My dad was born in 1925 and my mom in 1932, and I listened to the stories of them growing up in the segregated South during the Depression, during the New Deal, living through the Civil Rights era. My dad’s love of history sparked

Pose Star Ryan Jamaal Swain Asks, ‘Why Is It Such A Laborious Task For Black Lives to Matter?’

June 17, 2020 at 09:40PM It’s June, we’re still in the midst of a pandemic, and while we’d normally be celebrating the kickoff to summer and Pride month, we’re in the midst of international crisis, with unrest finally coming to a head. We are urging the world to face the person in the mirror and change their harmful, dangerous ways, to fight to end the horrific treatment of black and brown people in America by police. George Floyd, whose life was tragically cut short by police officers, has finally been laid to rest in his hometown of Houston. Protesters all over America are still in the streets, calling for justice in his case, as well as for Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Iyanna Dior and many, many others. Everything feels broken, and people are tired. While it’s still Pride month, members of the community are using their platforms to speak out about the injustices that plague BIPOC people and the LGBTQIA+ community. To kick off the celebrations at Hearst, Hearst Black Culture hosted a conversation with Ryan Jamaal Swain, an actor in the hit TV show Pose. Swain is no stranger to using his platform. A self-proclaimed lover of people, he sat down with Tommy J. Atkins of Hearst Media to discuss his views on black liberation, effective ally ship, and intersectionality. Watch below. Outer Banks Season 2: Everything We Know

June 17, 2020 at 09:39PM Spoilers for season 1 of Outer Banks below. Watching the soapy teen drama of Netflix’s Outer Banks left me longing for a tan, a fictional summer romance, and a sun-drenched vacation. But more than anything, it left me craving a second season that will make sense of the show’s wild final episode. The series follows the socioeconomic warfare between the elite Kooks and working class Pogues in the North Carolina region known as Outer Banks. “It’s the sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses,” the show’s trailer explains. “Two tribes, one island.” At the show’s center is a treasure hunt for $400 million aboard a sunken ship. Along the way, there are love triangles and murder motives to satisfy all your horny and vindictive urges. If you, too, found yourself invested in a show that somehow satisfies your One Tree Hill, The Goonies, and Gossip Girl obsessions, here’s everything you need to know about a potential second season. This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. There’s no confirmation or release date. Netflix has yet to officially renew the 10-episode drama, which was released on April 15. However, should the show get green-lit for season 2, production will likely be delayed. Filming on TV shows and films has halted across the board due to COVID-19, meaning Outer Banks season 2 (likely) won’t be headed to our screens until late 2021 or

Meghan Markle and Jessica Mulroney Were Reportedly ‘On the Outs’ Long Before the Scandal

June 17, 2020 at 08:16PM Jessica Mulroney’s decision to privately threaten Black influencer Sasha Exeter’s livelihood and try to silence her had major consequences on Mulroney’s career after Exeter went public and recounted Mulroney’s treatment of her. CTV is no longer airing her reality program I Do Redo, and Good Morning America will no longer use Mulroney as a fashion contributor. Did it cost Mulroney her friendship with Meghan Markle? The Duchess of Sussex has made no comment about it publicly, nor is she likely to. Page Six spoke to a source though who claims that Mulroney and Meghan’s friendship was strained long before Mulroney’s scandal. Meghan’s rep declined to comment on Page Six’s story, so make of that what you will. Multiple sources told Page Six that the Duchess felt Mulroney was “benefiting” career-wise from her position as Meghan’s close friend and stylist at one point. (The Duchess styles herself now and has been for over a year.) Mulroney gained much more name recognition after Meghan joined the royal family—enough for her to get coverage from U.S. outlets because of their friendship and even a profile in Harper’s Bazaar in honor of her GMA position. A source told Page Six that “I don’t know what the tipping point was, but Jess has been on the outs for some time. Their friendship is definitely not what it was. And really, how can you have such a close friendship when one person is basically making a career out of the friendship?” Mulroney hasn’t spoken at all about Meghan. In her profile with Harper’s Bazaar, Mulroney said, “This is my first

Rebag Is Getting Into the Re-Accessories Game

June 17, 2020 at 08:12PM While some brands are understandably struggling with the devastating impact of coronavirus on business, others are thriving. Namely, Rebag, a luxury retailer specializing in used designer handbags. As customers continue to buy less, more thoughtful, sustainable purchases are becoming more of a priority. According to Thredup’s 2019 resale report, the secondhand industry has grown 21 times faster than the traditional retail industry in the past three years. Since Rebag’s launch in 2014, the site has become one of the top resale destinations with ongoing innovations that redefine how customers shop and view luxury fashion. Rebag understands that your closet is a revolving door that will change over time: Its Infinity program allows shoppers to trade in previous purchases for a hefty 70 to 80 percent back in credit, which replaces the traditional attitude toward lifetime ownership. In 2019, Rebag introduced Clair, an industry-shattering proprietary tool that pumps out the cost and resale value of almost any designer bag within an hour. Rebag recently reported a $15 million Series D backing in May, bringing it up to $68 million, no small feat for a six-year-old company. Which brings us to today. Starting now, Rebag is expanding in other small accessories, a natural progression for the site’s trajectory. As with any luxury brand, accessories provide an entry-level point for customers who can’t splurge on designer handbags. From vintage styles to pristine items fresh from the box, prices start as low as $155 and will fluctuate as Rebag continues to

Sophie Turner Pairs a White Crop Top and Gray Leggings With a Plaid Blazer While Out With Joe Jonas

June 17, 2020 at 06:02PM Sophie Turner has been regularly photographed out on walks during quarantine. The actress was seen again this week alongside her husband Joe Jonas dressed in athleisure clothes, pairing a white crop top and gray leggings with a plaid blazer. She stuck to neutral colors, wearing black sunglasses and a white mask. THEIMAGEDIRECT.COM Turner is reportedly due with her first child later this summer. While Turner and Jonas haven’t personally confirmed the news, reports of Turner’s pregnancy first broke in February. A source told JustJared, which first reported the news, that the two are keeping the news quiet. “The couple is keeping things very hush hush but their friends and family are super excited for them,” the source said at the time. Turner and Jonas celebrated their first wedding anniversary (of their Las Vegas ceremony, anyway) earlier this year. Turner spoke to ELLE for its April 2020 issue about how being married to Jonas feels different than when the pair were dating. “I feel like the only thing that’s changed for me is having this incredible sense of security. Just the word husband and the word wife—it just solidifies the relationship,” she said. “I love being married. I think it’s wonderful. I’m sure we’ll have our hiccups and our different things. But right now, it’s like the security and the safety is everything.” She also had adoring things to say about her partner. “With Joe, I always felt like I was the one who was punching, like, way above my league. And I still feel like that,”
