Model Joan Smalls to Donate Half Her Salary in Support of Black Lives Matter Movement
June 12, 2020 at 07:42PM View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joan Smalls (@joansmalls) on Jun 11, 2020 at 6:12am PDT Supermodel Joan Smalls announced that she will be donating half of her 2020 salary to organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. On June 11, Joan, who was named one of the world’s highest-paid models in 2013 by Forbes, shared a video to her Instagram account in which she opened up about her personal experiences with racism and called out the fashion industry as a whole for promoting racial injustices. “The recent and long-standing acts against the Black community have been saddening, frustrating and unacceptable,” Joan captioned the post. “You fall short trying to narrate our stories by toning us down or having them curated by people who haven’t lived or walked a day in our shoes,” she added in the video. “It’s time to give us a real seat at the table because we are worthy; because we are talented; because we are unique.” “You’re part of the culture that perpetuates these conscious behaviors . . . You feed the beast, the beast of racism and inequality.” Joan went on to call out the fashion industry for continuing to support photographers and people within the industry who further perpetuate the inequalities faced by the Black community on a daily basis. “This industry that profits from our black and brown bodies, our culture for constant inspiration, our music and our images for their visuals, has tiptoed
Issa Rae Is the Queen of Casual Style on Insecure and These Outfits Prove It
June 12, 2020 at 06:45PM From the moment I started watching Insecure, I was drawn not only to the relatable characters, but I also found myself patiently waiting to see what Issa Rae would wear on each episode. She’s the co-creator of the hit HBO show and plays lead character as well. In case you need a little refresher, the show centers around Issa’s life as she deals with finding love, figuring out her career, and dealing with friendships in Los Angeles. With the start of season four, we decided to take a look back at Issa’s style evolution throughout the show. Overall, Issa’s wardrobe on the show is full of pieces that feature bold prints and colorful patterns. There are also a ton of vintage pieces like old Levi’s acid-washed jeans, printed blazers, and political tees. As the seasons progress, not only does Issa’s character mature, but her style does as well. For season three, Issa tapped former fashion editor Shiona Turini to join the show as a costume designer after working with her on a magazine shoot. As Issa’s character develops, you’ll also notice a few changes with her wardrobe choices. Since Shiona joined the show, we’ve seen Issa’s character wear a mix of vintage pieces with elevated ones from labels like Monse, Isabel Marant, and Acne Studios. Keep reading to see some of Issa’s best style moments throughout Insecure ahead. Related: Issa Rae's Stunning Engagement Ring Is Truly Hard to Miss – It's THAT Beautiful More Celeb

Outkast’s André 3000 Turns His Slogan Jumpsuits Into Powerful Tees That Command Attention
June 12, 2020 at 04:42PM Outkast’s André Benjamin (or André 3000, as we know him) is taking us back to 2014 with the political slogans he used to sport on his jumpsuits during performances. The rapper and actor created a website – aptly titled andre3000.com – where he’s selling 13 different long-sleeved T-shirts that feature his own memorable sayings like “have you stopped growing?” and “passionate about compassion.” They even come with André’s Not 4 Sale tag printed on the sleeve, and they’re ethically made from recycled cotton in LA by Everybody.World. Most importantly, 100 percent of net proceeds from these sales go to the Movement 4 Black Lives organization, which strives to mobilize people and affect national agendas in support of Black political power. Each shirt is $75 and printed in big, bold lettering that attracts attention, to say the least. While I’m over here trying to decide between “which type of stereo are you?” and “ok, hand over the cure and stop playing,” take a look at the site and read André’s impactful message to the world. “This is only one piece in the war against systemic racism. It takes all of us. BLACK LIVES MATTER . . . at a minimum,” André wrote.
