DIY Cold-Brew Iced Coffee

May 15, 2020 at 01:00PM Another cold brew coffee post? Really? To my credit this post was originally published in 2014 and was desperately in need of a picture refresh but also I’d like to consider myself an OG cold brew coffee drinker. First of all, I love coffee. Nothing new here. But my stomach doesn’t love coffee so much. Back when cold brew first came on the scene (I’m looking at you 2010-2012), my ears perked up when I heard that cold brew coffee is less acidic and can do wonders for anyone who is sensitive to the acidity of coffee. Hi! That’s me! C and I were living in NYC at the time and luckily were living in a place where cold brew was becoming increasingly popular…and expensive. Our weekly grocery budget for 2 people was $50 (seriously!) and one meal out so there wasn’t a whole lot of room for a $4-$5 cup of cold brew. I became determined to master cold brew. The only problem? All the tutorials online involved industrial sized containers and equipment a 21 year old broke post-grad definitely did not own. And so I took things into my own hands and that’s how I mastered the perfect […] The post DIY Cold-Brew Iced Coffee appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Digital Organizer: System for Storing + Organizing Digital Products

May 14, 2020 at 10:00AM Looking to set up a better digital organizer design? Here is a fool-proof system for storing and organizing digital products and organizing digital photos so you can stay on top of your products and not lose a thing. I am a firm believer that your space affects your mental health. That junk drawer or linen closet that is “disheveled” (to put it lightly)… it’s probably causing you some level of anxiety without you even knowing it. When I have a clean home, my mind is so much more at ease. The same goes for your tech products! We all have so much crap stored on our digital products… it’s bogging down your physical systems and your mind! So over the years I’ve developed a system for storing and organizing digital products that helps keep me sane. It also makes it so much easier to find things so you aren’t searching for that one picture or document. Now if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by this digital organizer, I get it! My recommendation? Start with one product at a time. Maybe it’s your phone or your tablet. Maybe it’s just backing things up to your hard drive. You can always build from […] The post Digital Organizer: System for Storing + Organizing Digital Products appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Carrot Cake Baked Oatmeal Bars

May 13, 2020 at 10:00AM These carrot cake baked oatmeal bars are made simple and delicious using wholesome ingredients like rolled oats and grated carrots with a delicious cream cheese maple frosting for a sweet treat you can eat for breakfast or dessert! Honestly, sometimes I’m at a loss for what to say in these blog posts. While I know some of you read, the majority of you don’t and I’d rather you make the recipe than worry about my verbal nonsense. Usually I have a quick little anecdote or story for what inspired the recipe but today I’m at a loss. C requested something carrot cake themed (his favorite dessert!) and I had just finished making a few updates to an old recipe of mine – these Chocolate Chip Zucchini Oatmeal Bars. I was inspired to make a carrot cake baked oatmeal version using the ingredients I had in the house. The final product turned out fantastic and after making a few tweaks while recipe developing the final recipe for these carrot cake baked oatmeal bars turned out pretty similar to the original, and while I hate to admit it, I think they’re even better than the zucchini version! And since May is C’d […] The post Carrot Cake Baked Oatmeal Bars appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Continue Reading… Author Davida Lederle | Thehealthymaven Selected by CWC

How To Make Bath Salts

May 12, 2020 at 10:00AM Wondering how to make bath salts? This homemade bath salts recipe will help soothe sore muscles, moisturize skin and relax you into your next bath – with 4 different combinations to help you customize your bath salts blend to meet your needs. I have always been a bath person. Like most kids, my nights ended with a bath though unlike most kids, I LOVED it. I feel like most kids don’t look forward to bath time but it was my favorite time of the day! This love affair has continued into adulthood where the highlight of most days for me is bath time. I know baths have kind of become the cliche for self-care but honestly, my nightly bath ritual is my self-care. I usually dump a bunch of bath salts into the bath, put on a face mask and read a book. It isn’t fancy and it’s never Instagrammable but it’s relaxing, soothing and the perfect way to end my day. Baths are not for everyone, but for me they are everything. I take a bath every single day (or almost every single day) but especially now that we’re all confined to our homes. That means I’m going through […] The post How To Make Bath Salts appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Continue Reading… Author Davida Lederle | Thehealthymaven Selected by CWC

Chicken Shawarma Bowls

May 11, 2020 at 10:00AM Get the best of the Middle East with this deconstructed chicken shawarma bowl. Made with oven-roasted chicken thighs, crispy pita chips and a delicious Israeli chickpea salad this healthy dinner recipe will quickly become a family favorite. One of the most common requests I’ve gotten over the years is more step-by-step photos detailing how to make my recipes. For a long time I resisted, simply because the process of shooting a recipe takes SO much longer when you’re shooting step-by-step but with Jess’ help last year we were finally able to step up our game (pun intended!) and offer you guys more detailed pictures for each recipe. And I get it, cooking can be intimidating for a lot of people (though I try to make it more accessible!) and seeing the process of how something is made is super helpful for visual learners. Luckily, I’m your new favorite person and managed to capture step-by-step of these chicken shawarma bowls. And if I’m being my honest self, the decision to share more step-by-step photos is also partially selfish. At the end of the day I share these recipes so that YOU will make them! Of course, these are classics we enjoy […] The post Chicken Shawarma Bowls appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Continue Reading… Author Davida Lederle | Thehealthymaven Selected by CWC

Thai Peanut Quinoa Bake

May 10, 2020 at 05:07PM A quick and easy one-pan meal, this Thai Peanut Quinoa Bake makes a flavorful vegetarian dinner recipe for the whole family. Topped with a zesty peanut sauce, your weekday dinners are officially complete! Sometimes it feels like I’ve spent the majority of my adult life figuring out what balance looks like to me. I basically went from carnivore to vegan and now find myself somewhere in between. I went from buying 100% conventional produce to thinking organic is the only way. I’ve realized I can eat meat and be conscious about where my meat is sourced. I can buy organic when it’s available but not stress when I have to occasionally buy conventional. Healthy living doesn’t fall on one extreme or the other for me… it falls somewhere in the middle.  Which brings me to this thai peanut quinoa bake recipe. I used to have very polarizing opinions about Costco but have recently realized, it’s okay to fall somewhere in the middle! This recipe came about when I came across a gigantic bag of quinoa at Costco for $16. $16!  Dinner doesn’t get much easier than this – you need a few key ingredients, one baking dish and you’ve got […] The post Thai Peanut Quinoa Bake appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Helpful Ingredient Swaps

May 08, 2020 at 10:00AM Cooking more these days and feeling a little lost? I’ve got a list of helpful ingredient swaps for when you’re in a pinch and missing an ingredient! I’ve been helping out in the kitchen for as long as I can remember so getting creative in the kitchen comes naturally to me but I understand that’s not the case for everyone! I like to say that cooking is an art, not a science. Which will drive some people insane but I think it gives grace in the kitchen and allows you to experiment! Note: baking is a science and you can’t just sub and swap when you want… Since everyone is spending more time in the kitchen these days and using what ingredients they have on hand or can find in the grocery store, I wanted to share some simple ingredient swaps to help get you more comfortable in the kitchen. Wondering about a specific ingredient or a specific recipe? Drop a comment below! Happy to help. Substituting Grains So many grains can be used interchangeably. They do require different cooking times so be mindful of that but in general if a recipe calls for a certain grain, you can swap in […] The post Helpful Ingredient Swaps appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Build Your Own Muesli Recipe

May 07, 2020 at 02:00PM Dare I say better than store-bought? Make this build your own muesli recipe right at home and enjoy with milk or yogurt for a delicious and nutritious breakfast that you can customize to your liking! Perfect for an easy overnight breakfast that is ready for you in the morning. Summer is upon us and that means one thing…breakfast muesli! Okay not entirely true but definitely something we’ve been eating a lot more of now that the weather has warmed up. I haven’t talked about it much here, but we moved to a house with a yard in January but it was in the dead of rainy season so it was hard to see the benefit of having any outdoor space. Now that it’s actually nice out, I’ve been starting each day out on the back patio with a bowl of this homemade muesli recipe and an iced matcha latte (recipe coming soon!). Between bites I’ve been helicopter parenting our new garden (C tells me nothing will grow if I keep staring but I can’t help it!) and playing with Bodhi who has been loving his newfound freedom. Transitions to new spaces has always been hard for me and moving to […] The post Build Your Own Muesli Recipe appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Mediterranean Orzo Salad with Feta

May 06, 2020 at 10:00AM This simple and fresh Mediterranean Orzo Salad with Feta is perfect for a summer potluck or quick weekday lunch. Packed full of veggies and flavor this vegetarian dish is easily meal-prepped and will last all week. One of the things I didn’t realize when we moved from San Francisco to Marin was how much better the weather would be. I’ve talked about it here before but one of the biggest misconceptions about San Francisco is that it gets typical “California” weather. In fact, San Francisco rarely gets above 70 degrees and the summers tend to be the coldest time of the year. While I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Karl the Fog and genuinely believe San Francisco is the greatest city in the world (many will disagree with me on this and I understand why!), I’m not mad about how beautiful it is here in Marin. After a moderately rainy winter, the sun has officially come out here and we’re starting to nest into our new humble abode. For the first time we have a backyard, with a grill! We truly relish in the idea that we can sit outside and eat dinner. I hope […] The post Mediterranean Orzo Salad with Feta appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Switching to Clean Makeup? Here’s Where to Start.

May 05, 2020 at 10:00AM I will be the first to admit that the clean makeup world can be overwhelming. I feel like you’re first introduced to it and then you want ALL of your products to be non-toxic! Which is totally understandable… the facts about conventional beauty really do make me want to do a complete overhaul. But might I suggest a better, less wasteful way to switch to clean makeup? There is a strategy to switching to clean makeup, one that I’ve implemented and that has helped so many of you switch to cleaner makeup to. But first it starts with an audit…here’s how to switch to clean makeup! How to Switch to Clean Beauty 1. Start with surface area.  This could look different for everyone depending on how much/what makeup you wear. Which of your most used products cover the most surface area on your face? This is foundation for most people but if you aren’t a foundation gal, maybe the product that covers the most surface area for you is concealer, blush or bronzer. This is is specific to you! I suggest this as the first step because sure, it could be great for you to switch out your mascara but […] The post Switching to Clean Makeup?
