Welcome to the golden age of skin care peer pressure—have you tried retinol yet?

February 20, 2020 at 03:00PM by CWC It likely started with moisturizer. It’s the first product most of us buy when someone suggests it’s time to get serious about skin care. Then, you add a step here or there over the years, like serum or SPF. And then maybe you start using eye cream after reading glowing product reviews, or incorporate a toner after an influencer beams on Instagram that it changed her skin. Later on, when your best friend won’t stop singing the praises of a new retinol at brunch, you throw that into the mix, too. “Why not?” you think. And boy are you glad you did because later on, nine people ask you whether or not you’re using “a vitamin A derivative”. Slowly—yet somehow, very suddenly—your skin-care routine goes from being two steps to twelve. Welcome to the golden age of skin-care peer pressure. It’s nice to see you, friend. The same FOMO force field that pulled your middle-school self to sneak off to the mall without your mom’s permission is now at work on your bathroom shelf. As skin care has grown to be the self-care instrument du jour, slathering creams, oils, and serums onto skin has become cultural currency. If “it bags” and “it leggings” were must-buys of the past, consider the rise and reign of Augustinus Bader or the candy-capped empire that Tiffany Masterson created when she launched Drunk Elephant as today’s proof that you’re clued in. “We’re barraged all day long on our

This is the most ‘breathable’ type of foundation, according to a cosmetic chemist

February 11, 2020 at 12:00AM by CWC For days when you don’t feel like wearing a ton of makeup, but want that your-skin-but-better glow, your best bet is a lightweight foundation. Something with just enough coverage that feels light and airy on your skin. Ginger King, a cosmetic chemist, says you should use a water-based foundation. “Water-based foundations are very light and natural,” says King. “Just to enhance skin tone, more like a tinted moisturizer.” She says foundations that aren’t water based are either oil-based, which she says can clog your pores, or silicon-based, which she says are semi-occlusive for longwear. Most water-based foundations don’t last very long, so don’t expect to get all-day coverage. To spot a water-based foundation, check the ingredient list. The first ingredient will be water, says King. But to get you started, here are some of our favorite water-based foundations. 5 of the best breathable foundations with water-based formulas 1. MAC STUDIO WATERWEIGHT SPF 30 FOUNDATION ($31) When I was in high school and couldn’t find drugstore foundations in my shade, I followed the YouTube beauty vloggers straight to MAC. This foundation has an elastic gel-serum formula that hydrates the skin. Bonus points for including SPF 30. 2. GLOSSIER PERFECTING SKIN TINT ($26) This product is exactly what it says it is—a skin tint. It won’t mask dark spots or blemishes, but it will give you skin a more youthful, dewy glow with a more even finish. 3. Cover FX Natural Finish Foundation ($42)

Such a “hack” can introduce bacteria. To learn the right way to stretch the life of your best beauty buys, keep on scrolling. Hack your way to longer-lasting beauty products 1. Use the back of your hand to apply At the end of the fourth episode of  the latest season of Queer Eye, hair stylist and beauty expert Jonathan Van Ness shows us the best way to apply liquid products like moisturizer and foundation.  Take your product, put some on the back of your hand, then dab it on your face and rub in, he explains. “That way, you’re wasting excess product on your hands,” Van Ness says. ad_intervals[‘413183_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘413183_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); 2. Repurpose broken blush If you drop your favorite blush and it shatters, makeup artist Mary Irwin recommends crushing what’s left of your blush into powder, putting it into a little container, and

This fitness instructor finds calm at the center of her miles-long beauty routine

July 14, 2019 at 10:15AM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TX_IhWmXDE] Whether your nighttime skin-care routine is two steps or 10, taking care of your complexion can be a form of self care. Alicia Archer, a New York City-based fitness instructor and beauty vlogger takes that to the next level, with a 13-step nighttime routine. In our latest episode of our YouTube series Self-Care Nation, we follow Archer through her routine, and learn why skin care is so meaningful to her. She starts by removing carefully her eye make up by dousing two White Rabbit Premium Cotton Pads ($13) with the Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover ($15). “I make sure I douse these both a lot because you never want to pull or tug and  I gently press on the lashes,” Archer says. “I don’t swipe just yet, and allow the solution to break down the mascara first, and then after that has been done of course I can press and sweep, press and sweep.” ad_intervals[‘407839_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘407839_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); After cleansing and applying serums, Archer makes her way to step eight (yes, we fast-forwaded through a few but you should watch every. last. step): moisturizing. For this, she uses the Ursa Major Golden Hour Recover Cream ($49). It’s a hydrating cream, packed with black currant, calendula, and sea buckthorn to help skin chill and get all the moisture it needs. “I smell this and it just wreaks bedtime for me, so mentally, it

To get more wear out of your going-out dresses, add a turtleneck “I’ve seen a ton of 15-year-olds on Instagram who are cooler than I’ll ever be layering a turtleneck under a graphic t-shirt,” says Ashley. “But honestly, I have no idea how the f*** to do that without looking like a Target employee during
