July 15, 2019 at 11:08AM by CWC This time of year, I’m lucky if my a.m. primping lasts over an hour. The majority of the time, my morning beauty routine is sabotaged the second I spend more than two minutes outside, thanks to the out-of-control humidity that makes my hair immediately frizz and my makeup to melt. Such a tragic waste. To make sure all that time (not to mention product) that I spent doing my face for the day isn’t for nothing, I’m now looking to take some serious action: with long-lasting makeup. While it goes on and looks just like you’re wearing your regular makeup products, these are formulated to work overtime and actually stay put from the morning locker room through work and dinner plans. The secret’s in the ingredients. Typically, a longwear makeup product will have something like polymers or soft waxes—which both help the product stay on your skin—and/or strong dyes or extracts that provide pigment that lasts. “It has to do with certain polymers and plasticizing ingredients that are in a lot of formulas, especially the waterproof ones,” explains Jeannie Vincent, professional makeup artist. “Also, certain dyes last longer on the skin, like with the Bite Beauty stains, which give you such long wear.” ad_intervals[‘408182_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘408182_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); To make long-lasting makeup products last even longer, pair ’em with primers and setting sprays. “Priming the skin is definitely an important step to keep your makeup

An etiquette expert’s 3-step guide for kicking out guests who overstay their welcome
July 15, 2019 at 10:32AM by CWC When I first signed the lease for my apartment, my landlady informed me of a house rule that quickly turned out to be a blessing: no guests after 10 p.m. To me—and classic introverts everywhere—this was not even close to a bummer of a guideline, but still, knowing how to kick someone out of your house is a delicate art form. At least for the time being, though, it was an art form I no longer had to worry about mastering. Anytime I host a dinner party or a birthday gathering, I can be like, “WELP, it’s almost 10, you’re going to have to roll out or Rosie will be upset.” But since I don’t think Rosie will forever preside over my social choices at my place of living, I’d be wise to learn some go-to methods for knowing how to kick someone out of your house. As an initial point of research, I crowdsourced my coworkers for ideas—and they offered some pretty stellar ones: ad_intervals[‘399605_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘399605_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); “I just get up and start doing the dishes, or I say something like, ‘Don’t worry about the dishes! I got them.’ Alternatively, I will go to the bathroom, get my toothbrush, and start brushing my teeth or getting ready for bed. You have to know the people who are over pretty well for this second method to not be so weird, though.” “I say
The Instant Pot is a whopping 44% off almost *everywhere* today
July 15, 2019 at 10:05AM by CWC Long gone are the days when the best deals were scored over Black Friday and Christmas. Now, thanks to Amazon, the summer months have become the hottest season to save big on everything your heart desires without leaving the comfort of the couch. Prime Day takes place July 15 and 16, allowing you to stock your kitchen on the cheap. Right now, the mega-popular 6-quart Instant Pot is 44 percent off: It used to be $100, and now you can snag it for $56. And to keep up with the online retailer’s pricing, other big brands are flashing around some competing deals. We can’t let Amazon have all the fun, though. Target is selling the regularly priced $130 8-quart Instant Pot Duo for $70 today only, and Walmart has the Instant Pot Ultra on sale for $109 instead of $159. You can also get the 6-quart Instant Pot Duo from Kohl’s for $68 instead of $100 (as long as you use the code “July15” at checkout). Basically, no matter where you’re shopping today, you can add a shiny new toy to your collection for a fraction of the cost. Because those healthy gluten-free dinners aren’t going to cook themselves. ad_intervals[‘408091_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘408091_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); Buying a new kitchen appliance is a slippery slope. Hit that “buy” button on one and you can’t resist doing it again and again—and before you know it, you’re trying to
It’s no coincidence that America’s most-stressed city gets the least amount of sleep
July 15, 2019 at 09:49AM by CWC Let’s be honest: stress is a part of life. No matter your zip code, mental health maintenance is an ongoing project. But after an in-depth look at the headspaces of people across America, WalletHub has named Detroit, Michigan, as the winning (losing?) city in the United States of Stress. To boot, the city also received the lowest average amount of sleep per night. Coincidence? We—and researchers—think not. First thing’s first, it’s important to note that the group of experts culled national data from 182 cities to reach this conclusion using 39 metrics that fell under the categories of stress, financial stress, family stress, and health and safety stress. The amount of adults who clocked an “inadequate” amount of sleep fell in the “health and safety” bucket. Folks living in Detroit slept about half as much on average as those Overland Park, Kansas (the city that slept the most, on average). ad_intervals[‘408098_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘408098_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Detroit’s residents certainly aren’t alone. About 7 to 19 percent of Americans chronically miss out on sleep. And even though stress was just one of 39 metrics in the case of WalletHub’s study, The American Psychological Association reports that the two are inextricably intertwined. Twenty-one percent of American adults report feeling more stressed when they don’t log enough shut-eye, and 45 percent of adults feel even more stressed if they don’t get enough sleep. A lack of sleep also ripples
Should ovarian reserve testing should be on your radar if you’re putting baby-making on hold?
July 15, 2019 at 09:00AM by CWC I’m writing this on the day after I turned 37—and to honest with you, the run-up to that date was filled with anxiety that even the biggest piece of chocolate-caramel birthday cake couldn’t cure. See, I’m extremely single, yet I also want children one day. And in the weeks leading up to the big 3-7, I could practically feel my egg supply plummeting inside my body, because we’ve all been told that’s what happens at this age, right? I felt even more helpless because I’ve never had any kind of fertility screening, which meant I had no idea what kind of ovulation situation I might be working with. (After all, this kind of testing generally isn’t covered by insurance unless it’s a part of fertility treatment.) So when home health-screening company Let’s Get Checked reached out to me shortly before my birthday and asked if I’d be interested in trying out their ovarian reserve testing kit ($139), I jumped at the opportunity. ad_intervals[‘403689_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘403689_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); While there are several different tests that can estimate the amount of eggs a person has left, the one I took is considered the gold standard—it measures levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), which is generated by ovarian follicles. A low level of AMH indicates a low egg supply, which is considered a predictor of oncoming menopause. Levels above what’s considered normal can be indicative of polycystic ovary syndrome
What 4 dermatologists would never (like, ever!) do to their skin in the summer
July 15, 2019 at 08:08AM by CWC Even though summer is the season everyone waits for with bated breath, it does come with some restraints, namely monitoring time spent outdoors to ward off the ill effects of sun damage. So, when I asked dermatologists what they’d never (ever) do in the summer months, I expected a whole lotta talk about sun care, and it turns out, I got them discussing that and much, much more. Compared to the wintertime, summer means an onslaught of varied environmental factors like the beach, chlorinated pools (…also filled with tons of pee), a ton of humidity (which brings on a ton of sweat), and relentless UVA and UVB rays from the hot sun. Keep scrolling for what else dermatologists would never do to their skin in the season of sun and humidity. 1. Get a tan We pretty much equate summer with lying poolside in a cute swimsuit. With that comes inevitable sun exposure, which can lead to a tan or—worst case scenario—a sunburn. But dermatologist Robert Anolik, MD says it’s best to avoid both altogether. “I would never get a sunburn,” he tells me. “Tans and sunburns just mean elevated risks of skin cancer and wrinkles.” So practice sun safety and try not to even get that summer tan…unless it’s from a sunless tanner. ad_intervals[‘405751_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘405751_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); 2. Hit up a laser treatment Sure, lasers can undo the signs of sun damage, but they
8 of the best fitness tracker deals you can score this Amazon Prime Day
July 15, 2019 at 07:37AM by CWC My fitness tracker is—and always has been—my iPhone. But I’ve quickly realized that it’s not really meant for tracking everything. So it leaves me blind as far as what my heart rate is when I go on an impromptu run with my dog or decide to take a dip and swim. (Not to mention all of the steps I’m not tracking in a fitness class because who’s holding their phone through that?) Now, I refuse to rely on that thing. I’m upping my step-counting (and heart rate-monitoring, and sleep-tracking) game by investing in a fitness tracker. And Amazon Prime Day—AKA the Christmas of the internet—is here to solve my problem, because now I can buy one with the price tag seriously slashed. Below, you’ll find the very best deals on Amazon, which include everything from FitBit staples to the best-selling trackers that the site has to offer. You can even find one as low as 17 bucks, which is like, way less than a fitness class. This resistance band back workout improves posture in 10 minutes flat
July 15, 2019 at 06:52AM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqDl4nRHL0c] Welcome to Trainer of the Month Club, our brand-new fitness series, where we tap the coolest, most in-the-know fitness leaders to create a month-long fitness challenge. On Mondays, we have our “sweat drops” where you’ll get access to the week’s workout that you can follow along at home. This week, Bec Donlan’s working your back muscles with a fiery 10-minute resistance band workout. Regardless of how good I am about working out on the reg, the absolute one body part that gets ignored is my back. I’ll work my arms ’til they’re about ready to fall off and my core until it quakes, but when it comes to my back muscles, it’s outta sight, outta mind. This is not to my benefit, though. Even though I can’t personally see my back, it’s responsible for, well, keeping me vertical. And your back muscles are majorly in charge of your posture. So it’s a bright idea to not neglect those muscles back (ahem) there. In this week’s Trainer of the Month Club workout, Bec Donlan shares a short but effective (and sweaty… trust me) routine that involves a resistance band and your back, and you’ll also work your arms while you’re at it. ad_intervals[‘408040_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘408040_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); “We’re going to be working the posterior chain, which is so important for your posture, standing up straight, and just feeling good,” says Donlan. All it takes is a little
The secret to clocking hours worth of sleep in minutes? A yoga nidra session
July 15, 2019 at 05:00AM by CWC There are two kinds of people: those who can hold a tree pose for days and those who have unfurled a yoga mat one and a half times and whimpered through each downward dog. As a member of that latter group, when I first heard about yoga nidra for sleep, I was skeptical to say the least, because even though I love myself some zzz’s, the only part of yoga I can get down with on the reg is the savasana portion. Well. Learning from a meditation practitioner that yoga nidra, an ancient meditation practice, is basically just that, led me to change my tune. “I’m someone who loves sleep, and I have had such a hard time with sleeping: My son is now 4, and I’m still not getting a full night sleep,” says Julie Sacks, certified vedic meditation teacher and founder of well-being company Vie. “And so, as a meditation teacher [I turned to] yoga nidra, which is an incredible meditation.” ad_intervals[‘406430_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘406430_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Yoga nidra is a guided meditative practice that aims to nudge you into a half-conscious state of “yogic” or “psychic” sleep. It’s been around for thousands of years, and research points to this waking rest giving you the benefits of several hours sleep in a few minutes. Below, learn how it works.
