October 21, 2018 at 01:04PM With a chill in the air, it’s officially time to pile on warmer clothes. From chunky long sweaters to plush coats, breathing new life into cozy layers is essential for a wardrobe fall reset. “I love the idea of a cozy sweater or turtleneck under a blazer,” says Caroline Belhumeur, Vince’s creative director. For a touch of femininity, she recommends pairing back the menswear-inspired with a pleated skirt. When going for a textured look, Belhumeur says, “turtlenecks styled under sweaters or dresses feels fresh and modern. Layering also helps to extend the life of the garment from one season to the next.” Another option when styling versatile pieces like a silk slip dress? Add a cardigan or wrap-style coat to create a transitional look that goes from day to night. Pulling a long sweater over leggings is another option that’ll take you from the gym to just about anywhere. For a trend-focused look, Moda Operandi buyer, Lisa Ruffle says it’s all about plaid this season. “We saw it in many iterations from outerwear to accessories, but the plaid trouser was undoubtedly the hero piece of the season,” she says, adding that’s it’s a polished alternative to go-to denim. Can your coffee habit calm redness from rosacea? Derms say it’s legit
October 21, 2018 at 03:45AM Coffee-lovers will listen to any excuse to up their daily dose of the world’s fave source of caffeine (guilty as charged). And apart from burning fat and the antioxidant boost, recent research suggests that refilling your mug four (yes, four!) times a day might also keep you from developing rosacea. The analysis of past studies, which was published in the journal JAMA Dermatology, looked at data from 82,737 women who participated in a large health study between 1991 and 2005—4,945 of whom were diagnosed with rosacea during that period. They found that the one-fifth of participants who consumed four plus mugs of coffee per day were 24 percent less likely to develop rosacea than the one-fifth who drank less than one steaming cup per month. And decaffeinated coffee wasn’t associated with decreased risk for rosacea. Although further investigation on this subject still needs to be conducted, coffee already has some topical clout in the skincare world, according to two dermatologists. “Poor water balance in the body and dehydration causes tiny blood vessels to expand and push against the skin, causing the skin to look darker,” explains New York City-based dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD. By acting as a vasoconstrictor, or a blood vessel-constrictor, Dr. Engelman explains that the buzzy ingredient reduces redness, drains fluids, and tighten skin up when applied topically. “Rosacea is triggered by sun exposure, extreme temperatures, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, and others. These triggers cause blood vessels near the surface of the skin to dilate. Since caffeine constricts blood vessels, it can
With a Venus-ruled full moon this week, get ready for a wild ride
October 21, 2018 at 03:22AM This week’s full moon in Venus presents a huge challenge to the status quo—and an opportunity for personal change on the deepest levels, says astrologer Jennifer Racioppi. Bottom line: The cosmos is aligning to support your biggest dreams, so this is no time to play small. How to handle all this upheaval? Here’s Racioppi’s best advice on getting the most out of this tumultuous week with your food, fitness, and self-care choices—no matter what your sun sign is. Monday, October 22 The week kicks off with the waxing gibbous moon moving through cardinal fire sign, Aries. Meaning: Monday presents an opportunity to get things done. Yes. This productive day brings with it a sense of urgency and asks you to go after what you most desire—boldly. However, with the sun at the last degree of Libra, it forms a challenging connection with Chiron, the wounded healer, meaning intense and confusing emotions could arise. So even though you’ll want to blow through your to-do list for the day, it’s important to take a step back and connect with the deeper meaning behind your work. Why do you do what you do? What’s the most profound value(s) driving your ambition? In the words of the feminist theologian, Meggan Watterson, “Worth is not given, it’s claimed.” If you are striving to prove yourself via your accomplishments to justify your value to others, take a moment to acknowledge your inherent worth. Regardless of whether or not another person with authority deems you
7 benefits of swimming that’ll make you want to splurge on an indoor pool membership
October 20, 2018 at 05:53AM While lounging around poolside with a good book and some ice-cold lemonade in hand is sure to get rid of any pent-up stress, actually getting in the water is the real health-booster. And summer isn’t the only time to take advantage. In fact, hitting up an indoor facility during the colder months can leave you with a more intense, full-body workout than some of your favorite boutique classes. In recent years, more people have caught on to the many pros of spending time in the water. There are now workout classes where you get to live out your mermaid dreams (tail and all!) or have a full-on dance party to hip-hop music underwater, and even ballerinas are taking advantage of the pool for low-impact sweat-sessions. So, why does everyone seem to be flocking to the water? Well, when it comes to the benefits of swimming, there are plenty. Ready to dive in? Here are seven benefits of swimming to take advantage of year-round. 1. Swimming can help with joint pain If all that jumping around in bootcamp classes or logging miles on your runs has resulted in some joint pain, swimming could be the solution. Not only does water give you some relief by reducing the amount of pressure on your body (buoyancy is a beautiful thing), but the warm water also plays a role, helping banish any stiffness or discomfort you’re experiencing. Basically, you’re getting a low-impact, super-soothing workout that’s incredibly gentle on your body.

Online vintage shopping will be so much better if you use these 6 simple tips
October 19, 2018 at 12:36PM New York City may have a reputation for being one of the world’s foremost fashion capitals, but from personal experience, this doesn’t always hold true for secondhand shopping. The stylish millions occupying the city have picked through its thrift and vintage stores pretty thoroughly. As a result, I (and a lot of millennials my age) have turned to online vintage shopping. The internet is like one big warehouse capable of producing pretty much any piece of vintage clothing your heart desires; eBay is one such portal, but I more often find answers to all of my problems on Etsy. Yes, the website known mostly for cute home decor and handmade jewelry is also the best place to buy your vintage duds. Most of my prized Earthly possessions are things I’ve found while sifting through the thousands of items that fill its pages. They include but are not limited to a burgundy ’90s leisure suit, a very heavily shoulder-padded blazer emblazoned with stars, and an everyday black slip dress I wear, well, almost every day. In a lot of ways, negotiating secondhand goods online feels like digging through racks IRL to find exactly what you didn’t know you’d been searching for—just on a bigger scale. So as a seasoned and successful veteran of Etsy’s vintage section, I have a few important tips to help you navigate the seemingly endless options—plus some insider intel from Etsy’s resident trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson. I got a CBD facial—this is what happened to my complexion afterwards
October 19, 2018 at 12:08PM If you had to dub one ingredient the all-star, MVP, queen of the wellness world right now, without hesitation, it would be CBD. Cannabidiol, the anti-inflammatory, non-psychoactive component of the marijuana plant, is now known for being an incredibly powerful, healing substance that’s able to do everything from alleviating pain to quelling anxiety. Of course, while it has an impressive list of benefits, the one I’m personally the most excited about is its beauty-boosting prowess. Since it’s anti-inflammatory, CBD is being infused into skin-care products so that it can soothe irritation. So, as one does, I started hoarding each and every CBD-spiked beauty product I could get my hands on—you know, to have a chilled-out, un-inflamed complexion—but then I saw that CBD facials are becoming a thing, and so I had to give one of these babies a test drive. Celebrity facialist and skin guru Ildi Pekar is offering a CBD Vibe Facial, and it’s meant to “vibe you out,” she says. Pekar is no stranger to CBD, either—the beauty expert already sells a CBD-laced tissue repair facial serum and sleeping mask with CBD oil, so she’s a big fan of its benefits. Dermatologists don’t necessarily hate it either. “CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits on skin,” says Rosemarie Ingleton, MD, a New York-based dermatologist. “So it might calm any rashes that you might be having, and should help control free radical formation in your skin.” Despite the clear perks for your complexion, Pekar tells
Amazon reviewers have must-read intel on these cult-beloved dad sneakers
October 19, 2018 at 11:46AM It pained us to do it, but last year we admitted that our fathers were right about something: Chunky sneakers really are cool and comfortable. We weren’t alone in this revelation, either—so many people have embraced dad shoes as one of the biggest sneaker trends for 2018. The pair at the top of this shoe pile would have to be the Fila Disruptor 2. Not only is it an OG of oversize kicks (it launched in 1996), but at $65, it’s a way more accessible option than, say, Balenciaga’s Triple S, thus lending itself to mass dadcore-meets-sleek-streetwear appeal. “The Disruptor 2 has been one of the most popular footwear styles in 2018, both in the US and globally,” Louis W. Colon III, vice president of heritage and trend at Fila North America, told us last month. Amazon reviewers generally say the Fila Disruptor 2s fit small. If you want to add a pair to your sneaker collection and plan to buy yours online, here’s a very helpful tip a lot of Amazon reviewers are sharing about the way these kicks fit. While the women who’ve bought ’em love ’em, find them super comfy, and are excited to lace up and go, they generally say the Fila Disruptor 2s fit small. It’s ironic, given how big they look, but it’s nonetheless important intel to have if you’re adding them to your digital cart rather than trying them on IRL. Depending on how much wiggle room you like
This is the one body part you’re not paying attention to but should be
October 19, 2018 at 11:20AM You might have a robust skin-care routine. You know, the kind that includes a 5-step ritual for your face, the best natural shampoos and conditioners for shiny hair, and supplements for healthy nails, and yet you still might not be paying attention to one very important body part—your legs. “Your legs can really tell you a lot about your health, your emotions, and your mentality,” says Julie Elliott, skin-care expert and founder of luxe natural brand In Fiore. “Legs tend to carry a lot of water retention, and they’re also where you can have circulatory problems and issues with lymphatic flow.” “Our legs can really tell us a lot about our health, our emotions, and our mentality.” But they’re also a seriously powerful tool. They get you through spin class, boot camp, chair pose, and you can almost liken them to the shocks on a car, since they absorb much of the impact from all of these activities (and you know, from walking down the street, too). If you’re anything like me, though, the most TLC you give your legs comes when you finally shave (sigh) or when they’re so sore you’ve got to foam roll them out. “We shouldn’t forget to nourish harder-to-reach areas like the legs,” notes Robert Anolik, M.D., a New York City-based dermatologist. “Inflammation from dry skin and wear and tear can cause skin barrier breakdown, leading to scaling and itchiness.” The thing is, simply slathering on your typical moisturizer isn’t going to necessarily solve all potential leg woes. That’s why Elliott concocted the Firmante Elevating Leg Tonic (coincidentally, Hannah
