July 02, 2020 at 06:00AM Like many Londoners, I have retired my Oyster card and now venture as far as I can either walk or cycle. My Strava has never seen such a flurry of activity, as I’m doing a cycling tour of London’s parks for socially distanced picnics. The only downside is I don’t want to turn up at 30th birthday picnics in padded Lycra shorts and zip-up jerseys that I’d usually wear for a long ride, but I learned the hard way that midi skirts and bike chains just don’t mix. So although the Scandi Instagram crowd might cycle in printed midi dresses, I wouldn’t risk the oil spillage. I’m seeing as many bikes on my Instagram feed as I am white sheets hanging up as backdrops, but some of the outfits would be wildly impractical for a bike ride longer than one minute. I have personally found that aside from sportswear, jumpsuits, shorts and skinny jeans are the best things to wear for cycling. I’ve then turned to colour and bold prints to add more personality to my outfits. Keep scrolling to see outfits that are appropriate for cycling but aren’t sportswear. Trust Me—This Small Parisian Brand Is Going to Be the Next Big Thing
July 01, 2020 at 06:00PM Most of us won’t have touched a handbag since lockdown began, instead sticking to a bag for life for our groceries and pockets for our credit cards. But now that we see signs of things slowly reopening and can visit garden centres and take a book to the park, many are in need of a chuck-it-all-in practical handbag. If you want something a little jazzier than a basket bag, then I’ve just found an under-the-radar French brand that creates the most beautiful striped tote bags. Rue de Verneuil was founded in 2014, however, it’s a new name to British shoppers as has just been stocked by MatchesFashion. The 1950s-inspired tote bags have a Riviera feel to them, as they have a thin elegant pinstripe, a tan leather strap and come in the colours you typically see lining the French coastline (primarily red, baby blue and a soft yellow). The handbags are made by hand in the Parisian studio and are an investment for a shopping bag costing between £100 and £200. However, it’s a handbag we really would use for every occasion in summer and is timeless enough to come out every holiday for the next ten years. Holly Just Wore a Lesser-Known Dress Brand We Know You’ll Love
July 01, 2020 at 12:00PM Honestly, what would we do without Instagram? I’m trying not to think about the amount of time I’m spent on the app during lockdown but it has meant I’ve been able to stay updated with Holly Willoughby‘s fashion choices. The TV presenter has a knack of wearing cool brands but outfits that don’t feel too “fashion”, if you know what I mean. Today’s choice? A dress by vintage-inspired brand Coco Fennell. The eponymous label was created in 2011 and Fennell, who was previously featured in Best Wardrobes in Britain, told us her reasons behind creating the brand: “Both me and my sister had fluctuated in weight quite a lot around the time when I started [the brand] and I think when we were both bigger, it was really difficult to find well-priced, flattering clothes. She was going to do it with me and then didn’t in the end, but I wanted to make flattering, affordable, girly clothes really. “ In 2020, that brand is almost exclusively printed dresses that come with, its now trademark, square necklines and puff sleeves. Holly’s dress today is a pretty white with rose print and she’s styled it with nude heels. A dress brand you don’t want to miss out on. These items, and several more cult buys, have just gone into the summer sale on Zalando—so keep scrolling for our edit. Wear these shorts with the matching blazer, or separately with a white T-shirt. This “Boring” Dress Is Set to Be Summer’s #1 Buy
July 01, 2020 at 06:07AM Fashion decrees that everyone should own at least one little black dress, but there’s an equally viable case to be made for the little white dress. Not that it has to be little (especially if you’re wearing your LWD in the city rather than at the beach), but as long as it’s crisp and bright white, then you’re good to go. There’s just something unapologetically spring-like and optimistic about this shade, be it lacy and whimsical or linen and minimalist. What’s more, the basic warm-weather staple was a pretty big deal on the spring/summer 2020 runways. “Much like the majority of the new-season collections, here we have another summer staple, but one that designers have reimagined with in line with the ‘keep it simple but never boring’ mantra,” says Who What Wear UK’s editor, Emma Spedding. “Valentino opened its show with several white cotton dresses, Loewe showed beautifully draped midis and Jonathan Simkhai’s white maxi dress is pure perfection.” In short, they’re all the rage right now. Below, you’ll find an edit of the best white dresses to invest in now that’ll see you through the summer. Before that, however, feast your eyes on the ways influencers wear their little white dresses for all the white dress outfit inspiration you need. Puffy sleeves are always a good idea—particularly on white dresses. Wear mini hemlines with sheer tights now. Don’t be afraid to contrast your white dress with black accessories. Metallic accessories will take your little
These Hairstyles Will Take Years Off Your Face
July 01, 2020 at 06:00AM I don’t know about you but the past 101 days has felt long. I’ve got more grey hair, more wrinkles, and despite going to bed earlier, I’m still tired. There’s no denying that I’ve felt like I’ve aged faster in lockdown. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this (I have no issues with changing hair colour or a few lines on my face), the speed at which it has happened has been a little disconcerting. I want to feel like myself again—and for me that means getting a haircut. Over the past few months I’ve lost count of the amount of people who have said their hair needs cutting. From my husband to my colleagues as well as my parents, the want to get a chop has been strong. Personally, I’m desperate to get my hair cut back into a bob—I want to feel like that new and improved version that always comes post-chop. I don’t think I’d be exaggerating to say that we’re all looking to hairdressers to give us back our former selves—who we looked like pre-lockdown with a cherry on top. With this in mind, I spoke to two hair stylists—Peter Burkill and Efi Davies on the haircuts to go for now restrictions have been eased. And which cuts will makes us look and feel more youthful, to combat all the accelerated ageing we feel like we’ve undergone (even if that’s not the case). First, however, it’s important to assess your hair before you even
The ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s Trends That Are Selling Like Crazy
July 01, 2020 at 05:00AM It’s true: What comes around tends to go back around eventually. Since we know that fashion is cyclical in nature, it should come as no surprise when we see trends resurrect themselves from the past—sometimes from decades in the past. Designers are always revisiting the archives in order to reinvent the wheel for the seasons to come, fixating on one decade or period of time before moving onto the next. In the past several years alone, we’ve cycled through ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s fashion trends, cherry-picking which silhouettes and motifs to bring into the present-day. The great thing about vintage clothing is that if you hold onto an item for long enough, you might just see it come back into the style spotlight again. Or, like me, you can take to raiding the wardrobes of your parents and grandma to borrow the original versions and source even more from vintage stores (coincidentally also the most sustainable way to shop). Once such vintage retailer is The RealReal and its Head of Women’s Clothing Sasha Skoda, who is sharing the exact trends from these past three decades that are selling better than any others right now. Continue on to see (and shop) them all. Scarves: According to the data that Skoda shared, searches for scarves are up a whopping 162% and that the resale value is also on the rise, correlating with the current overall ’70s trend. We’ve seen fashion girls styling silk scarves in creative ways, from tying them up “babushka” style over their heads to knotting them around their neck and even wearing them
If Your Hair Is Snapping, These Are the Habits You Need to Change ASAP
June 30, 2020 at 05:30PM Over the past few weeks, it’s safe to say that we have all experienced a beauty mishap or two. From patchy, half-fallen-out lash extensions to grown-out manicures and toes that need some serious tending to, there’s no doubt that our beauty routines have recently been flipped on their heads. The biggest issues that it seems almost everyone is facing, though, are those to do with our hair. Being unable to get out to salons means that many of us are currently facing unsightly roots and split ends and even risking at-home haircuts in a bid to better the situation. One of the most common complaints that I have come across, however, is that of hair breakage. In fact, almost everyone I have spoken to agrees that their hair seems to be snapping much more than it ever has before. Unsure whether your short strands are breakage or just baby hairs? “Loss of elasticity in hair leads to snapping. Healthy hair will be able to ping back into shape. The stress test is when it’s wet, if you pull the hair and it bounces back, it’s healthy,” says Paul Edmonds, celebrity hairstylist and official BAFTA partner. While there’s no doubt that regular trims are essential for keeping hair healthy and strong, there are some things that will help prevent further hair breakage. Keep scrolling to discover the hair habits that experts warn could be causing your strands to snap and what you can do to help. Okay, it might seem obvious, but overprocessing
